In 2012-2013 season Memphis Grizzlies were one of the best teams in the NBA. They finished the regular season with 56 wins, they made the conference finals and it seemed like the Grizzlies are destined to compete for a championship. However, the coach was changed, the team got older and now all that's left are the memories of the Grit`n`grind. Join me, as I examine the history of the Memphis Grizzlies!

I think that you are ignoring the elephant in the room in that they are a small market team with very little incentive to “blow it up.” In the pursuit of continuing their playoff run, they traded away one of their first round picks (with bottom 8, 4, and 2 protections, respectively) for the next 3 seasons for what amounted to nothing. Their goal is to go ahead and lose the pick this year, so that they’ll have their 2020 and 2021 picks at the same time as Parsons, Conley, and Gasol’s contracts all expire. In the mean time, they have focused on acquiring younger, defensively minded players like Kyle Anderson and Garet Temple to go along with Jaren Jackson Jr., who has the potential to be a franchise player for years to come. Dillon Brooks was snubbed for all rookie too, having been the only rookie to play all 82 games this season on any team, and been a really good scorer/energy guy off the bench. There’s also the potential of Wayne Selden, who has shown flashes of being a really good player, occasionally going for 25 to 30 against legit opponents, and he isn’t even 25 yet. This all boils down to a pretty versatile defensive core of Jackson, Anderson, Brooks, and and one or two high draft picks with a ton of money to spend in free agency to draw players to Memphis. Most importantly, the team has firmly decided on the types of players that it wants (unlike in the last 12 years or so), that is to say, heady, long defensive players who are versatile on defense, and that gives me hope that they finally have some sort of plan to become a real threat in the Western Conference again, instead of just a tough out

Great comment E Gully. My question to you - who is gonna coach those players? Bickerstaff is OK with a good offense, but none of the players Memphis has, screams good to great offense. At least not yet. Another thing you mentioned, and I mentioned as well - the draft picks. Who says that they can draft properly? Jaren Jackson has yet to see a real NBA court. We'll see how he pans out. Others? Pretty much since Kyle Lowry in 2006 and Mike Conley in 2007 all players they have drafted aren't any good. Small market or not, the front office hasn't really shown that they have a real plan. Why not trade Gasol while he still has value if you're not winning with him anyway? Gasol won't change his style of play. And cap space doesn't mean anything if you aren't attractive as a team. It's the same story with Dallas - they have cap space, but besides Harrison Barnes and DeAndre Jordan this year, high-quality free agents just don't want to go there. And the owner there has shown that he's willing to spend money. Your thoughts?
