My parents, Bill and Marilyn Moss founded Moss Tent Works in 1976 and designed and produced the #1 expedition tents in the world in the 70s and 80s. Bill Moss had invented the Pop-Tent in 1956 that revolutionized the backpacking and outdoor industry.

Back in the 70s I bought and still own a Moss Trillium six man backpacking tent. The adventures I had in it will never be forgotten. Thanks Mosses!!!! and like they said, through the years this tent got so many inquisitive conversations started.

I still own a Moss Stardome 2 tent that I purchased around 1999 for around $700, I got it for bike camping that I did at that time. I used it in Europe and in Canada and It was a bombproof tent during a hurricane I slept in with wind gusts of 90km/hr and rain. I even did winter camping in it a couple of times. The tent Easton Aluminum poles however failed very quickly in the tent so I had to find a company that could replace them as by that time Moss tents company in Maine had already folded. I did find one in Washington state that replaced all poles for $200. I do use it occasionally still for short distance bike tours during cool or inclement weather as it is a heavy/bulky tent at 5kg with a ground sheet. Described as a 2 person tent it is a bit crowded for two with all their gear. It is a free standing tent but not easily set up in the dark as the poles fit in sleeves on the tent. I have reapplied waterproof spray to the tent just as a precaution as repeated sun can deteriorate the protection. It can be very hot inside on real hot days in spite of 2 large screen doors and a small roof vent as well. It is too heavy and bulky a tent for me to use now on long bike tours as I try to reduce my pack loads.

In 1980-81 i purchased the 2 person Star Gazer tent. One of my trips was a 10 day solo up in Jasper. I gave it up years back.. My regret today is realizing what it would be worth monetarily, but on the other hand, I know longer pack, and hopefully someone is still using it

This isn’t really the history of Moss tents. It’s more of an advertisement. I clicked on the history because my uncle was his original partner in the first design.
