Osgiliath, the Citadel of Stars, was the capital of Gondor before Minas Tirith, and it saw more warfare than perhaps any other city in the realm of Gondor in Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Yes osgilath was a beautiful city one time thriving, singing, trade bustling etc but now in ruins , but there is very creative way to rebuild osgilath , after the battle of pennalor fields the tens of thousands of orcs dead bodies ready to fertilize the fields to be able to grow abundance of crops , and with tons and tons of iron from the orcs, shield, armor, swords and helmet etc leaving Gondor with lots of iron to exploit and some Corsair ships free for the taking , just melt down the iron to make chisels, hammers tools etc, plows for farming the fields and around it and build skyscraper size building with the iron with stone and glass windows of course, and build a railroad around osgilath for civilians to move around or goods around city and osgilath can be living in a booming era , population growth cuz of crops and more living space for people to live in, rebuilding provides lots of jobs etc mostly farming, traders , construction workers and sailors etc and osgilath would be living in a modern like city lol

The Dome Under the Stars was said to be elaborately decorated with Gold, Mithril and Gems. It also housed the Palantir of Osgiliath, the largest of the Seven stones.

@@timonsolus officially according to Tolkien's works, the stone was lost to the Anduin river and never found. Unofficially, and you will need to follow the rabbit down a hole that is my mind, the Osgiliath Palantir was found by the Crowned Prince of Umbar and the High Priest of Melkor in 1180 of the Fourth Age. They used the Ithil Stone recovered from the ruins of Barad'Dur to locate the Osgiliath stone. The quest for the other stones continues north after the Prince and Priest meet the Captain of the Ithilian Rangers. I need to finish the rest of my story to complete the quest.

“This city was once the jewel of our kingdom. A place of light, and beauty and music, and so shall it be once more!!!” This is one of those places that’s tragically difficult to visualize how it once was at its height, for we only see and encounter the city as ruins. But I like to think that after all the wars and conflict it was one of the centers of renaissance and renewal for Gondor. Just like people, places are also not lost forever should we choose to keep them :) But I find it interesting that the city itself was divided by the Anduin the same way the world of men was divided with other races as well as themselves. A form of art imitating life? 🤔

Beautiful tangent on the etymology. That same theme in Anduril's description is what made it one of my favorite passages. "Very bright was that sword when it was made whole again; the light of the sun shone redly in it, and the light of the moon shone cold, its edge was hard and keen. And Aragorn gave it a new name and called it Andúril, Flame of the West"

The tale of Osgiliath reminds me of Berlin, almost completely destroyed in WW2 and then divided into East and West opposing armed camps, a frontier of the Cold War, before being reunited and rebuilt anew into a shining capital of Western culture.

This would actually totally make sense, being that The Shire is often greatly compared to Great Britain. Gondor is so far east that it could actually represent Germany :). I guess London or Paris would be Bree. I wonder what would be Edoras in the modern world?

@@austex1996 while your right about the Britain inspiring the shire from what I've read the elves take the place of the British in WW1 while Gondor and Rohan are a mix of France/Belgium and in the first war Italy. Mordor and the general "east is evil" vibe is meant to show WW1 Germany with Tolkien being said to have metaphorically had sauron take the place of the kaiser as Germany was set to reshape the world order had they won and dominate Europe and thus all their colonies. The reason Britain is the elves is because they are separated from the world of men in the story by the fact that they keep their realms isolated while Britain has the channel in real life. The elves also in lotr send troops around and help however this is a small minority. Most elves are abandoning middle earth as Tolkien may have viewed the British abandoning continental Europe to focus on it's empire. I highly recommend looking into the subject as it's quite interesting how many different takes he could have had

The architecture of Osgiliath, as well as its geographical position in Middle Earth, gives me a lot Byzantium vibes. I mean, you even have an army out the East coming to attack it. I think that it is mentioned somewhere that Tolkien based Gondor on the Byzantine Empire, in terms of aesthetics and designs. Not sure where off the top of my head, but I remember reading about that a few years back.

Part of me is really sad that Osgiliath never reclaimed its glory as the capital of gondor, sitting at the best place to be a giant hub of international trade, linking up with Pelargir & Belfalas, Nurn, Harad, and The Dagorlad plains that lead to Rhovanian and rhun. The massive city would be a perfect place for trade to flourish, and the Gondorians fought bitterly to keep their former capital. I'd love to have seen all of that effort bear fruit.

I think the problem is it wasn't that defensible in its position on a plain with a river bisecting it through the middle, unlike Minas Tirith with its back up against the mountain and rings of defences. Hopefully, it at least regained its position as the commercial capital of the realm even if the seat of the King's power remained at Minas Tirith.

I've always thought it was really cool the depth of history that Osgiliath has, I love the realism of how they moved the kings seat to minas tirith, it just all feels so historically believable! Thank for this video, I have had an awful completely sleepless night and it brought a smile to my face! Oh and I love the tangent on etymology, I'm always fascinated!

I always found both Osgiliath and Minas Tiriths' locations too far to the east far from Gondor's geographic center which is usually a desirable characteristic for a capital city. I do realize Gondor's territorial boundaries extended further east in its past, but still it seems too far east. And of all places to locate your capital...within spitting distance from Mordor of all places!?!

Absolutely here for the etymology! A criminally underappreciated field of study. It's amazing how many everyday English modern words have roots dating back thousands of years, spanning continents and countless language groups. Tolkien, being the language nerd that he was, threw more than a few real life etymological references into his legondarium languages.

Lot of symbolism for the Sun the moon and the stars. But as far as the elements that feel like fire isn't really given that much of an identity of its own in Tolkien's works. I feel like there should have been a 4th silmaril so that way there'd be a Sumerel to represent all four of the elements instead of just having one Silmaril to represent fire and Earth or one ring of power to represent fire and earth

I've been working on a lore video about another series and I was wondering how you create that effect where the images zoom in and out. A city built on two sides of a body of water which was the capital of a great empire and a city of great wealth and culture before being conquered by an army from the east? Hmmm, I wonder what this city could be an allusion to from real history. 🧐

The comparison is apt to a point; however, while the city you are implying became the capital of that conquering empire and it even ended up claiming continuance to that imperial legacy, Osgiliath remained a ruin and a battleground until the end of Third Age. Perhaps this latter part of the city's fate could be attested toi the impression imprinted into Tolkien by ruins of many European cities he witnessed in WWI, only to be repeated in greater measure and wider scale mere 20 years after? Tolkien was no stranger to these kind of conceptual combinations. The battle of Pelennor fields, for instance, carries in itself elements of not only Catalaunian plains (451), but also that of siege of Vienna (1683) and the less known and half-mythical (but well known to him!) Battle of Bråvalla (mid-8th c.)

Hi Joy Stan. Thank you very much for this video. I really do like the history episodes that you create, being a student of history myself. For some reason I remember reading somewhere that the Dome of the Stars had depictions of the actual starlit sky on the inside. Specifically the stars as they looked from the summit of the Meneltarma in Numenore. Am I correct in this?

I do wish there was more maps in Tolkienian works, while it's nice to have Middle Earth so detailed in the more famous map in The Lord of the Rings, a small black dot for Tharbad, Osgiliath, Eregion and Lond Daer doesn't give an idea of size or importance. Also maps of the far east or the Ages of the Lamps.

One cause of great regret for me is that there are no extensive writings describing the rebuilding of the places of men. Not just Osgiliath. I would have loved to read of the rebuilding of Arnor and places like Weathertop especially. I also think it a real shame Osgiliath never reclaimed the title of capital city and we never hear about the resettlement of Minas Ithil. For me making Minas Ithil a city of men once the wounds of war were healed, would have been a priority. To show to the world that the darkness and evil had passed for good. I can but dream of new days of glory for both Gondor and Arnor, for the histories that were not written.

Been watching so much Tolkien content lately anyone who not subscribed to Elfwine's Road should go take a look her work on silmarillion and unfinished tales is excellent well worth watching every video I'll probably rewatch hope you don't mind me plugging her channel men of the west but thought it was deserved
