The History of Popular Mango Varieties with Walter Zill
Today I got to meet and hang out with Mango Expert Walter Zill. I went to meet him to learn about his property and mango trees. His family has been pioneering in the cultivation of mangoes in Palm Beach County, Florida for the past 100 years.
Besides mangos to my pleasant surprise, I found out we share a similar faith and passion for God and the Bible.
Walter blessed me with a copy of his book he wrote about his love of his Christian faith, love of God, and the mangoes he knows so well. I am excited to read the book.
I look forward to getting back to his property soon and film some videos.

This is important, part of history. I got lucky enough to sit with Walter and eat a wally , it was the only fruit he had that season of that variety. A really kind and generous guy, always willing to help people understand the historical significance of his Grove and his families impact on the now booming mangoverse.

Back in about 1978 I visited the old Zill nursery on Federal Highway in south Boynton Beach. Walter took me around and let me taste many different mangos - and gave me the samples to take home for the family to check out. We agreed on 3 trees: Wally, Philipine, Keitt. Mangoes from that Wally were prized by family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances for 4 decades. I moved recently and left my Wally-tree behind. But I brought some Wally bud wood over to Southwest Florida and have managed to get two grafted trees going. I hope they survive and do well in this different environment.

You were lucky to live that mango history. I was working in a nursery then, we sold Tommy Atkins like crazy. We didn't know any better

Thanks for capturing Walter in his grove. Great stuff. The Zill family has been a treasure for all who love and grow mangos. 80 years of contributions in mango varieties. I have 8 of their varieties right now, and want at least a dozen more.

Paul, I have a question.. do you know what variety most grocery stores sell. They don't state the variety on the sticker. One said it came from Peru and that was the best that I have tasted from a store. The ones from wallmart are sour and stringy.

most stores in the US sell Kent or alphonso.

Yes I forgot also Tommy Akins. That one is just bad! Kent is good ripe from a home tree but most stores have them upripe and they taste really bad.

Thommy Atking is what you find in stores usually. Sometimes you can find Kent and Keitt which are good when you find them. Usually labels say them.

Did you find out why he kept getting choked up talking about the Beverly mango? He nearly cried a few times. There is a story there.

I have a suspicion that he's just passionate about mangos & loves his family & wants to share his knowledge in the world. He's getting up there in years & this is his legacy. Lots of reasons to get choked up when u & your family have dedicated their lives for generations to bring something beautiful into the world 🌎🌍 🥭

Beverly was their family mango 🥭 that wasn't offered to the public. It's now out there and is an excellent late season variety.
