"This will be a short project," I said. "It'll be done in about two weeks," I said. "it will only be about 20 minutes," I said. Welcome to what ended up being my most difficult project. Aside from how tough it was, it was filled with technical issues and mishaps, some of which couldn't even be fixed in the final product. On a good note, I will be purchasing a new microphone before the next part.
A special thanks to anyone who I borrowed footage from. Especially special thanks to the defunct page belonging to Lord Karnov who left behind a plethora of excellent footage.

I just gotta say, I watched through these and I'm legitimately disappointed there isn't more. I think there were some big problems with the videos, but you showed something that very few other people that do these sorts of videos are able: You legitimately care about the subject matter. I can tell that you're not just reading off the Wikipedia bullet points. Actual work went into these videos, even if not all of the information is accurate. The commentary is thoughtful even after having watched so many similar things. Again, I don't agree with all of it, but it was solid and thought-provoking. These feel like actual *video essays* rather than puff pieces. Even if you don't make any others, I'm glad to have watched them.

I am currently binging the whole series, very happy to see that it has been rebooted and resumed recently. Considering JRPGs in chronological order is an approach that is both obvious and somehow new on youtube, and gives me renewed appreciation for each and every one of them. I initially considered skipping this one video for lack of a precise recognizable game in its title and boy am I glad I did not, for the historical context it gives is truly invaluable. While I imagine the task will get herculean upon getting to the SNES golden era of JRPGs that all deserve multi-hours reviews, without even mentioning the PS1, I really look forward to continuing this journey with you. Thank you very much Mr. Gentleman.

About damn time someone put these games in the spot light. Very well put out series of videos. I might be more of a Western RPGer but JRPGs will forever have a place in my heart.

The Legend of Heroes was part of the Dragon Slayer series? Honestly didn't know that, I used to play Legacy of the Wizard and FaXanadu a lot as a kid, glad to know the series is still being played and is still quite fun, even if the current series is far removed.

Great video. Can't wait for the next one. Do you think you'll be doing any of the Dragon Ball RPG games that came out in the late eighties and early 1990's for the Famicom systems? They're hard to find, but I'm wondering if you have played them and what your thoughts are. Thanks.

Really, What makes Legend of Zelda NOT an Action RPG?
@justatoaster7476
@justatoaster7476 4 года назад
Lack of level progression and rpg mechanics. It is influenced by JRPGs but isn’t an JRPG itself.

Does Zelda counts as action RPG?
@mr.gentleman2358
@mr.gentleman2358 7 лет назад
Zelda II is the only one I count as a true RPG. The rest are action adventure games since they don't have RPG mechanics. I actually think Majora's Mask with its ton of side quests is built similarly to a RPG, but is still missing stuff like stats, being able to upgrade and customize your character, etc.

Right but you have a fairly unique idea of what RPG means when describing a game. It is not a category outside of marketing or for a way for department stores to sort product. WAY more games (video and none) are RPGs than you seem to allow. RPG has more subsets than and other genre of video game type. If you are really wanting to get picky turn-based, real-time, direct-role, third-person, action, adventure, and many more are the categories within the RPG genre. These are not exclusive either the Action genre also has subsets with similar categories within. So please stop trying to sound like a authority on the subject when you far from well educated on the content. P.S. Please don't start a reply with all the examples of games that fall within the fuzzy margins or the crossovers because there are always outliers in every category system. But you can't just discount a game like Zelda as not being an RPG bc it bugs you (sry couldn't find a real points you made for this decision to argue).

Is there a reason you neglected to mention the Rance series? It seems unusual to ignore a series that is still running to this day.
