Anyone should be proud of their Swiss heritage. Occupying such a gifted geographical location coveted by the powers that rule, decisions have been made well and have required courage. We don’t learn much true history in the USA, and by this lack of knowledge we have forgotten who we all were in the first place. The world owes a great debt to this land and people who have struggled to remain neutral and turn from violence when they were surrounded by violence and hatred. I hope for peace in the future and a return to simpler days when people looked at real clocks to keep the time and wore watches. There’s something comforting about knowing the actual time everywhere in the world even though you don’t have a phone or atomic clock up and running. Thank you for the video. It made me feel like putting on a watch, eating chocolate, and climbing a mountain. 💝Peace.

10:23 Nope, sorry incorrect. The 1949 Washington Agreement handed out all nazi assets to the allies after the war. In exchange for the US to lift it's sanctions against switzerland. This contract also included the hanfling of private and corperate german origin assets. Jews had bank accounts in switzerland but their nationality was german so they got the same deal. Another problem were unclaimed assets from victims of the holocost. The reparation from 1999 had nothing to do with nazi gold.

How is it that western switzerland speak french i cant understand that part, seems to me like geneva and vaud used to be german speaking cantons, can someone tell me how is it that they changed from german language to french language ?
@Ryan_Winter
@Ryan_Winter 2 года назад
They always spoke french, Fribourg was the first primarily french speaking city state that became an associate member of the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1454 and became a full member in 1481. Valais had been itself a federal republic, called the Republic of the Seven Zehnden, and had always been bilingual, meaning one half of its population speaks French the other German, it became an associate member in 1416 . The Imperial City of Geneva had always been french speaking and became an associate in 1536 and requested full member status in the Old Swiss Confederacy after a failed annexation attempt by France. Vaud had always been french speaking, they became a part of the Old Swiss Confederacy after Berne annexed them from the County of Savoy in 1536. Vaud didn't become an autonomous member state until the late 18th century. Neuchâtel requested admittance to the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1707 and has also always been french speaking. The french speaking Cantone of Jura used to be a part of the Cantone of Berne until 1979, if I remember correctly it was annexed by Berne after the Burgundian Wars in the second half of the 15th century. The people of the Italian speaking Leventina valley requested membership in 1440 and became an associate of Uri after 575 men from the Leventina and Uri defeated a Milanese army of 10'000 men at Giornico. Other parts of the territory that comprises today the cantone of Ticino were annexed by the Old Swiss Confederacy from the Duchy of Milan. The Three Leagues, after the Swabian War known as the Free State of the Three Leagues, had been trilingual, speaking Romantsch, Italian and German, since their founding. They used to be an "Eternal Ally" of the Old Swiss Confederacy, until they became a member of the Swiss Confederation in the late 18th century.

The powerful Bernese City and country State after defeating Charles the Bold duke of Burgundy and also the Comte de Savoie annexed the French Speaking Vaud and also became the Protectorat of the city Geneva and Solothurn. French was LINGUA FRANCA and the Bernese declared themselves BILINGUAL. Both Fribourg and Berne hadn't participated in the battle of Marignano which was lost BECAUSE BERNE WAS THE MILITARY MIGHT and hadn't participated in the balttle of the Central Swiss Confederates and it seems the Central Swiss Cantons didn't offer the Bernese shares of the North Italian Expansion so Berne and Fribourg had made a separate peace with king Francois 1er which later was adopted by all cantons as" Paix Perpetuelle " with France. Switzerland is the only country in Europe which didn't Germanize or Francize certain minority parts of their country such as Germany, Austria and France did, which shows great tolerance for minorities and their protection. Also French was the language spoken by Nobles all over Europe and even England was ruled by French-Speaking Valois or d'Anjou French kings. (Tudors were Valois and the Plantagenet were 'dAnjous)

Four languages : When you live near the boundary of Germany you speak German because you belong to them before. When your friend live near the boundary of France he speaks French because he belong to them before. When your classmate live near the boundary of Italy he speaks Italian because he is an Italian before . When..... Switzerland existed because of these boundaries. They became friends by means of sharing foods, sharing ideas, until they decided to create a new country out of four boundaries. ( My simple explanation )
@3Body1307
@3Body1307 6 месяцев назад
@@susanapfister-cuesta4010 your simple explanation is very wrong. The french speaking area never belonged to France, partly to Burgund. Swiss-German Speaking area was never part of Germany. Germany just exist since 1871. Italien speaking area never was part of Italy. Italy exist just since 1861.

You have to remember that we know of the concentration camps in hindsight. In the early 1940s only the Germans knew. So to punish the Swiss for trading with the Germans in 1940 and 1941 is pretty harsh.
@ThrE3-GeS
@ThrE3-GeS Год назад
Yes and switzerland was surrounded by axis power. It just had too. Also Hitler would of had a solid argument to invade switzerland if they wouldn’t had trade with them. They had no other choice. You need to ask and know how the circumstances where back then and not just asking an ethical question from this point of view of the time.

British Commonwealth, USA and Canada sent vessels full refugees(MS.St.Louis) back to Germany and closed their borders to all Jewish immigration also as Switzerland absorbed 40'000 Austrian Jews and 6'000 Allied soldiers and airmen. Nazi Gold found in Bavaria was split between Washington and London, the Anglo American pirate empires since 1946 stole Billions in Gold-Reserves first from European later from 3 Middle Eastern countries and in 2014 the CIA stole the Ukrainian Gold Reserves also the Afghanistan Gold reserve was completely blundered.
