The History of the 3rd Infantry Division 

I just got back from my first deployment a few weeks ago in 3rd ID. 2nd brigade. Spent nine months in eastern Europe.

I was in the 3rd Infantry Division for three years, sixty years ago. I learned more about the 3rd I.D from this video when when I was in the army.

My Grandfather served in the 3rd Div while in Italy during WWII. I'm damn proud of him!

Proud to have served as a dog face soldier

My great grandfather was attached to this division as a s/sgt and tank commander of the 756th company C. Listening to his audio tapes is heavy but love to get any information I can find! He earned a silver star in Stambach Germany. There he and a small unit of the 3rd took the town in their own. Only to be shelled by our own artillery that came late. He jumped upon an infantry soldier injured by shrapnel and laid on him in the middle of the town until the artillery ended.

Thank you for an excellent episode on a great US division. Several years ago, I purchased a book online on the history of the 3rd Infantry Division during WWII. I knew the 3rd was Audie Murphy’s division. Reading through the MOH citations from the 3rd, I decided what Audie Murphy did was very heroic but it was far from the most remarkable act of heroism. The Italian campaign gets overlooked a lot by many Americans. Because of the terrain in Italy, it was a meat grinder all through the war. Weather, especially in the north, was terrible. The landings in Normandy were vital to get the second front open but the US Army in Italy suffered some of the most casualties there during the war. Never forget the sacrifices that the Allied personnel suffered in Italy!

Two of my uncles served in the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion. It was not organic to the 3rd ID, but was so habitually attached to it that its men wore the 3rd ID patch. My Uncle Jack was wounded in the spine by shell fragments during the fighting in the Colmar pocket, about a week before Audie Murphy earned his MOH firing a machine gun from the rear deck of a knocked out tank destroyer from the 601st. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

In 05 OIF I was attached to the 3rd ID 4 brigade Vanguards during OIF 3 I was with the 1/184 out of California I wore their batch on my right side in honor of my uncle's who served during WW2 and Korea I saw the 3/7 inf regiment and that was the battalion of who one of my uncle's severed with I was honored to visit with that battalion.

Post - Marine Corps: I Myself, John Rodriguez, Served in the 25th Infantry Division ( Light) , 3d Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment ( USASOC), and, on My US Army DD Form 214, HHC, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 3d Infantry Division ( Mechanized) , XVIII Airborne Corps, "Battle Borne". Is the 3ID a good unit to be in as Infantry? I like the idea of patrols as well as some high speedness

People watch Band of Brothers and come out thinking the 506th is the best regiment in the whole US Army. Enter 15th Infantry... good times.
