Continuing our series on Asbestos, using data provided by Asbestos Awareness Australia, we look at the timeline from 1880's onwards.
The asbestos crisis in Australia is far from over, and the ongoing risks and harms are poorly documented and comprehended. A summary of the asbestos timeline is necessary to understand the current settings and to set the scene for evaluation of measures and policy options to minimise future fatalities from asbestos-related diseases.
The full report will be available from the DFA Blog.

Note to correct the record, the "email in 1966" was actually a written court statement!

The very first presentation that you did on the asbestos issues had a very personal impact upon me. Many years ago, I was hired to develop a new business which involved much use of various types of asbestos,including blue asbestos. I worked for 3Years in a confined,non ventilated space,with no protection of any type.In all that time only once did someone comment that this stuff could be dangerous and that was by a visitor to inspect progress. I don’t blame anyone but myself as I had the necessary knowledge but being young,I was invincible.When I mentioned all this to my G.P. Many years later,his reaction was nothing short of astonishing. He immediately organised a barrage of hospital tests and pronounced clear,for now at least. Your programs in a variety of ways are vital to the community at large.Please keep up with your work and information as I’m sure that there were many people that had to stop and think and decide to get tested.

@@roberthill9946 It should never be up to individuals to take responsibility for a public regulation failure. Everyone, at some stage of their life, on some views of different matters, can feel invincible. It is human nature. That doesn't mean regulators can turn a blind eye, or worse mislead the public and collude with the private sector to profit at the expense of public health. Same in Covid time, just because some young people believe that the virus can do no harm to them, doesn't mean the government can indulge this sentiment and not implement the vaccine mandate. You shouldn't be blaming yourself. The government should've known better and done better.

@@leahl5119 Firstly , I apologise for the tardiness of my responding to you , but sheer exhaustion is the reason.You are obviously a very intelligent person and , I understand and totally agree with you , however my anger still continues to grow as , I delve more and more deeply into what cannot be described in any other way than corruption and collusion by governments and other self interested businesses to cover up the asbestos dangers for such an unbelievable number of decades. Such behaviour still exists and of course not only on the asbestos scandal but also as you elude to the Covid issues and so many other serious problems that governments everywhere should be addressing. Political corruption has been going on for so long in almost every sector of our lives that , it has been accepted as normal practice of how the world works. There is growing great change and awareness happening virtually worldwide and , I am optimistic that it will lead to the betterment of so many countries and people around the world. My personal view is that the Federal upcoming election will be the start of more accountability and responsibility by governments to properly represent the people first as they were elected to do. I probably have not explained myself , views and thoughts too well as I am terminally ill and still trying hard to help bring about changes for the betterment of all and most certainly the drugs are a hindrance and slow me down. I really appreciate your comments. With Much Respect From Robert Of Australia 🇦🇺.

I went down the Wittenoom rabbit hole recently - and it absolutely blew my mind what the Western Australian Government allowed CSR to get away with, and to this day the WA Government still has sat idle and done absolutely nothing to resolve what is widely considered the single greatest environmental disaster in the Southern Hemisphere. For context, the Northern Hemisphere is Chernobyl. Wittenoom is considered worse because it's far deadlier still to this day than Chernobyl is. You can go right now on google earth and view satellite images of the Wittenoom mine and see the canyon it was located in full of 300+ meter high blue tailings piles that are full of blue asbestos. All just sitting there out in the open. Weather and erosion has seen those tailings contaminate every part of the surrounding environment. I'm left speechless that a company as large as CSR could just walk away from that mine site, and the WA Government concluded the feasibility of cleaning the mine site up would cost tens of millions of dollars, so it therefore just gets left as is.

Yes, its a stark story - of Government inaction and typifies the whole Asbestos disgrace. Money power wins, people lose.

A Marvelous product it was; ashamed it's barbed particles cannot be eradicated from the body; deadly to the miners and manufacturers and users. It is perfectly safe encapsulated in exterior grade paint and there is plenty of garages and even houses clad in it and still numerous commercial buildings have it in their roofs and gutters. So long as you don't disturb it's fibres, saw it or make dust with it you are safe. Renovators should know how to handle it properly: it must be kept wet with no airbourne particles. When disposing it must be double wrapped in heavy grade plastic with each layer taped to contain it.
@WalkTheWorldDFA

And then it has to be out somewhere safe, not just dumped. Also it can rot in situ, so care is advised.

@@WalkTheWorldDFA Menia Tip in Sydney was the last place I knew of to dump it where it is buried in a deep hole. Hopefully the area is not sold off in 50 or 80 years in land packages. Not that that could ever happen.
