showstudio.com... Writer Gary Warnett offers a cultural and social history of the hoodie, citing references as diverse as E.T, Rocky, Dexys Midnight Runners and Juice and unpicking the stigma associated with the garment
Gonna miss this kind of deep history, knowledge and insight. The Gwarizm blog was one of the few places of respite for those of us frustrated with the modern day streetwear/clothing 'culture'. His work will now live on as an incredible reference point and design/cultural archive for years to come. R.I.P
I heard about gwarizm only a year or so before Gary passed and still haven’t found anything else like it. Is there something out there that is remotely similar? 🙏🏼
The knowledge Gary speaks. It’s like poetry. Beautiful to hear him speak with expertise on a single product. Missing his words and teachings, but thankful for his contributions to culture.
THANK YOU SIR GOOD IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD IF U MUST HAVE TALKED ABOUT RUN DMC WHO BOUGHT ADIDAS TRACK SUITS AND LOW TOP SNEAKERS.NEVER MIND GOOD.THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.
Nice approach here, but slightly off on some facts here. Especially on calling out the eighties being the period of change for the "hoodie" turning into a fashion item. So sad, people try to force the facts to their favourized direction, instead of asking those who attended and lived the style they falsely glorify. First, starting out with Japan being relevance in the poularity of bespoken item is appreciated, but misunderstood. The facts are, more or less, these: 1. US military wearing hooded sweats while controlling Japan post WWII. 2. Surfing japanese beaches during that time, wearing hoodies to dry and warm after sessions 3. Californian and Hawaiian surfers, often Army or Navy soldiers, doing so also, being one of a kind with those in Japan. 4. Cali surfers carrying that behaviour into the 80s 5. skaters assimilating that style 6. skateboarding and Hip Hop crossing over in the early 90s, having Hip Hop adept the style Hip Hop in the 80s was all about the crewneck. No hoodies to be seen, not even with b-boys, you even seem to confuse with writers, which also did not do the hoodie. Do not make things up if you do not know the facts.
