Plenty of examples of Courage leading to huge defeat and death and a few where cowardice has lead to out right victory. Better stratagy, weapons, training and a bigger better equipped army is definitely a better option for victory every time than courage. Boringly good planners, military leaders who are good at employing the right people in the right places to keep their armies well supplied and led by great tactical Generals are the rulers who really win wars and create the biggest empires. The further back you go the more influence and effect having a brave leader had on the out come of a battle and it definitely helped but its far from the only thing or the most important thing for a great leader needs to be a conqueror. Just take Augustus, he was a very average general and not particularly brave, once leaving the sight of a battle before it started and leaving it to his main General Agrippa to lead the battle and all his battles from then on. It was the one thing that Romans disliked about him and most of his propaganda was trying to make up for this perceived lack. However he was a truly great leader, Emperor and Politician and especially good at the boring stuff of feeding the masses and putting the best people in the right places.

While it is true that the Ottoman Empire went to wars often to serve their self interest, often with a very thin if not existent cassus beli (?), that isn't very remarkable, looking at other empires. For example, Alexander the Great attacked the Persians with no provocation from them. There are many other cases in history like this.

Ultimately though, all empires crumble. Even the west is unfortunately in decline now. China is a rising threat.

The idea of recalling the retired Sultan Murad to the throne came not from Mehmed II, who was still a young lad, but from his old and wise Sadr- Azam Çandarlı Halil Paşa. As is well known, Mehmet II had Çandarlı Halil executed following the capture of Constantinople, primarily as a result of rumors spread by his rivals alleging that he took bribes from Byzantium to dissuade the Sultan from invading the city. According to many historians, another reason for Mehmet's rage was the letter delivered to the retired Sultan at Çandarlı's behest. Appearently, the boy Sultan had been deeply offended by this intervention to his authority.

Suleiman was not a very good leader. He was already at the height of Ottoman power when his father, Selim I, left the country to him. It was very easy to do this when he already had so many opportunities. He also killed his own son, Şehzade Mustafa. Şehzade Mustafa was a very intelligent, knowledgeable boy with a great military genius. If he had not killed him, the Ottoman Empire would probably have moved much further. In those times the ottomans got taxes from nearly all european countries. It was not difficult to take more areas. It was difficult to stay in that areas. So if they go the europe the persians started to attack them. If they attack persia european contries attack them. Thats the reason why they couldnt conquer more areas without loosing some. Even Suleiman Khan said that he reached the final borders of the ottomans. More than that could lead to dangers.
