My greatgrandmother had those tattos up until forarm. I asked her once why does she have them: "I have them so not to be like turks." - she said. Also being called "turk" in Bosnia was insult, in some parts still is.

I asked my tattooed grandmother about this tradition, she said it was called "sicanje" (rough translation would be incisioning or small cutting) or "bocanje" (poking). The ink could be made from coal as you stated, but she used burnt spruce needles, which were crushed with a stone and then mixed with sheep or goat milk. Some even used animal fat or oil. Those tattos are green-ish in colour. She and her friends tattooed themselves while they were 10 years old, which is crazy to me. The main reason was to repel the turks, but it was also considered fashionable. Thing is, many of the symbols that I have seen on the elderly folk are not only of christian origin but old slavic pagan aswell, so the tradition is most probably much older than the 15th century.

Bocanje(poking) or Sićanje(remembering) not sicanje(cutting)....they didn't cut themselves,they poked themselves with homemade ink,so they could remember who they are,if they would be stolen by Turks and sent into Turkey,to be brainwashed and to become muslims or janitsarries,a soldiers of Turkish army,so the tattos would remember them that they are Catholics,Croats! They even today steal and kidnap kids,Albanians and Turks,but it isn't spoken publicly,because of fear,that they might kill the victims. Same thing is going worldwide,where ever is radical islam,from Boko Haram,ISIS,to Hamas,they kidnap and torment people,who aren't muslims. It's a religion which is far more dangerous and vicious then Nazis or Communists were and it should be completly stopped!

I don't really understand why you compare a territory with a people group, in the end it doesn't make sense because people during history often used to move while territory names rarely changed. That being said, Croats settled on the territory on today's B&H during the 7th century and stayed there. You mixed a lot of unconnected things: Croats arent Ilyrians and never were. Croats were and still are Slavs. Also Bosnians arent Croats either they were esentially Vlach and Morlachs driven into mountains by Romans and latter Avars before being slavicized. Also those tattoos have nothing authentic Slavic about them. Its as if you said that you are a manufactuerer if Toyota just because you drive one. In all fairness you threw up there a bunch of silly statements just to make a video and collect views. Very pathetic.

My grandmother and other elderly women have such tattoos. They wore them to identify those women as Catholic so they wont be married by muslims. They tatooed their arms and hands. @@aloesinaloe9586 Agree! just for the clarification I don't blame people in Turkey though! I thought a lot about this. when you look to the history of that region with all of the wars, before and after the fall of Babylon until today, that makes sense that such an idea grows there to make people united. People everywhere just want safety and prosperity and it went to the wrong direction after Muslims took them! So, I don't blame people but I blame the action of "war". War never brought any benefit to humans when you look at it in the bigger scale! That's why I do not like religions, and ideologies, or cults! they are products of war and they are the creator of war! the results are always death and put cultural manifestations to die! Same issue with the black community! I'm so disagree with people like Jordan Peterson in regards to Christianity. First of all Christianity has not been peaceful vs Islam, or whatever, and both of them mascaraed about same amount of poor people. Yes in the west we might need Christianity to stay united and be better people, as he thinks! but we can be way better people than that and stay united! with kindness, understanding, honesty, clean education, not cooperate education! and people know it! support the prosperity and you guarantee the best results in a land! long live Indo-Europeans! Im not saying because I think we are better!!, Im saying this because I know my history and culture! I wish the best for anybody else on earth! Cheers!

I spoke with one Albanian from Peć, Kosovo. He said that they are autochtonous to Balkan and that they are descendants of Illiryans. But his looks was so alien to me. He looked liked person from Afghanistan. Dark tanned, black hair and eyes, short in stature and lean, expressed eyebrows, almost connected. Even Syrians look more European to me. I know that we Croatian have Illiryan roots also. But how could we be connected to Albanians when we look so much different, almost continent away?

I think that these are Paleo-Balkan tattoos from the rural areas of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Dinaric Massif), probably the legacy of the Illyrian-Tribal-Thracian tribes. This may be proof that the southern Slavs are autochtonous in the Balkans and the southern Slavs (Slovenes, Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks, Slavo-Macedonians, Montenegrins, Bunjevians, Gorani, Bulgarians, Torbeshi, Pomaks, Shokts) are descendants of the Illyrians, Tribals, Dalmatians, Dardanians, Thracians, etc.
@bosanskislavonac

Mix of Slavs and ancient Balkan peoples. Nothing new. In the North is more Slavic influence present, but in the mountainous south is more Illiryan or even Vlach (Morlach, Wallach, Wales).
