Saw this arcade at Albertsons way back. It scared the living hell outta me, I was like 6 or something. Bloody letters of the title with the deep voice saying "time killers" and the gameplay where your merciless lopping off limbs and you see blood everywhere. I wasn't used to that at all yet lol
Found your channel and have been watching your video catalog. It's the best channel on RU-vid in my humble opinion. Thank you for the entertainment and information. 😊
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries - Pat, you give ME hope That not everyone in the world today had completely lose their mind. I just love your sense of humor. You and I would be best of friends, I’m so bummed that we don’t live closer to each other. I’m stuck here in moonbat country (Massachusetts) at least for the short term but I may just sell my house a move my sorry ass somewhere where people love God, Guns, and their Family. I can’t take the type of people that we have in this state. ;-)
@@reagandow850 Thank you very much. I have two children that I absolutely adore and they are my strength that allows me to carry on. Before I got sick I was a certified Dell, Lexmark, Sony technician and I was out in Massachusetts for about a week for training. I absolutely loved it out there especially the duck pin bowling And candle pin bowling. I think you're right though, we would've been the best of friends :-) take care
This game may b my first memory of playing arcade games. I used to play at a Hills department store when I was probably 4 or 5 and my mom would push the cart up to the machine and I would stand in the back part and play cuz I was too small to reach the controls if I stood on the floor haha. I loved this game so much, the fact that u could lose limbs and still fight was so cool to me. It took me sum searching to find the name of it, I could only remember the Viking character (Leif) and that u could chop of limbs. When I found these videos about this game I was so happy. My other favorite game to play while on shopping trips with my mom and grandma was Primal Rage. Spent lots of time in Foodland playing while my mom bought groceries....the good ol days 😕
Nothing was more fun..... than being a teenager in the late 1980's and early 1990's... You just met up with your two dirtball buddies... you smoked a joint... you're buzzing and having fun... you go into the nearest town's pool hall... the smell of cigarette smoke and candy and pretzels welcomes you to a world that can only be awesome... The arcades aren't too crowded, and they're all making their noises enticing you to play them... you notice a couple new ones... you're so excited you don't know what to play first... one friend gets the pool balls and the other grabs a table in the back... you tell them to play each other first for a bit... you first wanna play some arcades. You grab a stool... you grab an ashtray... you got a pocket full of quarters and you're off to have 30 minutes of fun that only another kid from this world could appreciate. I remember this particular game, Time Killers, and loving it. Though, Street Fighter was better, except this did have the totally awesome gore than every dopey teen likes... but it wasn't quite enough novelty to pull most kids away from Street Fighter or Mortal... They were always far more popular. But by the 1990's Sega Genesis was already good enough to rival the arcades, and they began slowly dying throughout the entire decade... The final death blow to pool halls/arcades (usually one and the same) was the 'No Smoking' bans popping up by the late 1990's. Once again, rule-loving liberals with their fixation on controlling every aspect of life and rules and regulations... they sucked the fun out of another once fun thing in life. But I digress.
C'mon, did you have to do World Heroes dirty like that? 🤣 The real poor man's Street Fighter is Fighter's History and you know it. 5:08 That's crazy, I remember that Time Killers review in Gamepro because I had that issue.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I remember playing it in an arcade in Atlanta and then going back to Jacksonville and telling people about a crazy game where you can cut peoples arms and legs off and everyone looked at me like I was crazy.........
I was like, 5, and this was my very first look at any kind of video game violence, even before Mortal Kombat. It was at a roller rink. I had a few innocent questions: Why are they doing this to each other? Why do they hate each other so? What did they do to let it get to this point? (Irrelevant). Why are they still fighting when they keep loosing arms? Do they not care? Can they feel pain? All that lost blood. (Again, irrelevant). Why do they have to time travel? (Atmosphere).
Time Killers came out a month following Mortal Kombat. Thus the only MK clone released that year. Survival Arts was the only MK clone released in 1993. The next couple years got a lot of similar games.
Me and my brother used to play this game it was in a hungry Howie'sthey had a pizza buffet that my mom used to take us to absolutely love this game all of my money went into it
Something you did not cover is that even if You were not playing and it was just a demo playing on the screen you can control the avatars movements by clicking the buttons. I remember a few times smacking all the buttons and instantly winning during the 20 sec gameplay demo if I didn’t have a quarter.
Time Killers when first debuted in arcades the game wasn't well received by many gamers as not only the poor control scheme and gameplay, the hit detection was off making the game unplayable in every way. Time Killers in my opinion was more like a cash grab to Mortal Kombat rather than a standalone quality playable game.
It took forever for the Mega Drive port to come out and by that point the game looked dated. It's just unfortunate that the PAL version goes for crazy money. I actually still need to buy it for my collection.
@@allnamesaretakenful I played the arcade once at a bowling alley as a young kid. For years I thought I had played the arcade Timesplitters. It wasn't until I discovered MAME emulator that I got to relive the memories.
Man, I had an arcade focused show that never took off really, mostly the same subject matter and Time Killers was one of the episodes. I like what you're doing man, keep it up.
When someone puts in this much labor into something we love take a sec to give a thumbs up or share with a friend. He can make a little coin even if it doesn't cost a a penny. Thumbs Up!
I remember this gem. Choppy as it was, I couldn't get enough. Orion and Matrix were the only ones I didn't have to struggle with. When I played Mortal Kombat Armageddon, my bf and I went nuts with the player creation, buying memory cards like no tomorrow as the game would only save eight characters per card. I had one exclusively for a recreation of the Time Killers cast (and another for Bloodstorm). I'd love to see a reboot of this.
I remember first seeing this at the deli up the block from me when I was a kid, and was upset when Musashi opened with his fatality move and cut off my head in a second! This particular machine was 50 cents to start/continue, so naturally I was mad. At the comic shop down the way though, it was a quarter, and that's where I finally learned this weird old game, so much mindless fun!
Hey, Time Killers! I remember as a teen this was a sort of rumor of a game, something whose violence we heard about and when I eventually found it in an arcade it was a little bit of a disappointment.
There was another game that was rumored to be very bloodied and violent. That one turned out to be tattooed assassins from data East I believe. Supposedly there were 70 or 80 fatalities in the game. I don't think the game ever came out but rounds for the game were dumped so you can play it on Mame
There was a machine in an arcade in Southend on Sea here in the UK (they had the best arcades for years outside of London until arcades died, becoming nothing but UFO, stacker and gambling machines). I used to enjoy the game quite a bit but the cab was a generic type and Im not even sure it had all the buttons! I certainly didn't know there was a head button anyway but on reflecion it probably did have 6 buttons.. They had so many Streetfighter 2 cabs and variations including the "Rainbow Edition" I rember how refreshing Samurai Showdown was and as Patman says it was maore of a morbid curiosity type game.. Segas Time Traveller was in the same kind of vein in that regard but way more popular. I still find that "hologram" effect impressive. Anyway thumbs up for Time Traveller!
I had no idea you could do a stronger attack by hitting both limb buttons!! Now I've got to play this game again sometime! :D (edit: I don't recall knowing about hitting all five buttons together, either!) [edit no. 2--Wow! I had NO idea there was a home port of this game!!]
World Heroes is a poor man’s game? Seriously? Lol World Heroes Perfect is an incredible game; you should check it out. The first World Heroes game is decent, but nothing to write home about.
Rancid & mantazz were my favorites. I love the possibilities of instant kills by lopping off the head, tough to do at times but was fun. Time killers, mace: the dark age, & thrill kill are some of my favorites. Just for nostalgia & morbid fun. I liked clay fighter & primal rage as well. So many fun & off the wall fighters out there
I like the arcade version, not a fan of the Genesis version though. However, I prefer the arcade sequel (Bloodstorm). A shame that game never got ported to any home systems.
Few things to note. One, the game was in development at the same time Mortal Kombat was. A common misconception is that it was made after Mortal Kombat was released in 1992. The reality is it was developed at the same time by Strata and released within the same year by Incredible Technologies, a couple months after MK was released into arcades after its test run. Two, evidently Incredible Technologies was not very interested in keeping older games or hardware on hand, because I actually ended up selling a Jamma PCB of the game to a Incredible Technoligies employee back around 2007 or so as they did not have access to a working board. Three, if a person interested in this game is a Jamma PCB collector, they need to take note that the game, much like many other American Jamma PCBs from Atari and Midway, needs a ample amount of -5 volts to run. If this voltage is not provided with the correct amps, the game will boot loop. Also, the game also needs a sync cleaner if using it on a Supergun using a Jrok or similar encoder to convert the RGB to a NTSC signal for older consumer CRT televisions. Last but not least, the Genesis port sounds better on actual hardware than what you show in this video. I am guessing you used an emulator, given the audio is glitching out in your clips. Anyone looking to buy the port needs to be mindful that the game will not run on the Model 2 revision VA3 and VA4, or the Genesis 3.
i cant really put down the genesis port because the arcade was garbage in my favorite gameroom (waaaay back in the day) nobody touched that time killers, even being close to the entrance didnt help it
This game deserves a sequel with mini games in it too and character creation And you can unlock all the characters and everything else aaand you dont need internet just to play.
used to play this at my local pizza place when i was a kid! great Times. The genesis port was not bad either once you got you used to the ear stabbing sounds -->CT_T
Hey PATMAN!!! How about PRIMAL RAGE? I just thought about that one! When you lose a girl comes out and begs you to keep playing. The game was cool and funny.
WHAT!? This game was a MILD success!?! This game looks GREAT! I never knew of this game but I'm definitely looking for this on mame. These devs definitely deserve more recognition.
5:11 Was THQ even paying attention to the game they were converting? Thugg was armed with a _stone axe,_ not a club! But I'd like to see this game remade, preferably by a more competent company and with far greater FPS rates and smoother animations. A few more characters couldn't hurt; remember how Strata was originally going to make Thugg a Native American warrior instead of a caveman?
Well, Well, Well... it turns out not being able to sleep does sometimes reward you! This almost never happens thanks to being over here 🤣 I might as well say it; I do believe I am FIRST?!
@@ryanh9262 Been on YT since about 2006, and due to living in the UK but following mainly American content creators I am always playing catch-up, especially if I'm working night shift. At least I got to post it just the once 😁 I assure you, it won't happen again any time soon lol
Resident Elect Get mame arcade turn on cheats over clock the game.it blows away the graphics, smooothnes by far no more choppy same with sega emulator. They ran low frame rates sett it to 60 on 60 hrz tv.it will blow your mind on how fast and smooth game plays.
Love your videos but have to disagree with you on the graphics and age. This looked like crap back then and still does now lol. IMO MK still looks good. Maybe because this game controller bad and had bad animation I am judging it unfairly haha. Great videos, I have binge watched pretty much all of them. Thanks.
I’m a fan of sprite (not pixel art) based fighters as well but the graphics of Time Killers as a whole did not age well at all. The sprites look like something drawn from MS Paint and have low animation frames. That’s like saying the original Street Fighter has aged well.
I remember this trash game. When it first came out, everyone wanted to play it desperately simply because of the over-the-top (for that time period) gore and violence. But then people actually played it and realized it was trash.
