I was born in 1982, and I was the target demographic for the TV show and toys. On my 7th birthday, in fact, my dad surprised me with a 3ft plush Leonardo doll. That morning, before heading off to school/work, I had been watching the show while he showered, then he told me to shower quickly so I wouldn’t miss the end of the episode. I did, and when I came out of the bathroom, Leo was sitting in my chair in front of the TV. I had Leonardo in my collection of stuffed toys for years and years after that.

Everyone always forgets the IDW comic, which is honestly my favorite version. My first exposure was the original 80s cartoon, which I loved immensely. Then the live action movies (just the first two though) and then the 2003 cartoon. I saw the CG movie and kind of called it quits after that, until the IDW comic.

Sadly, my very initial exposure to the incredibly insanedom of the critically popular TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES craze was something of a hazy blur to recall; other than the unmistakable fact that me and my 2 brothers used to "watch it" virtually every Sunday morning like around 10a on the old-school WATL 36 channel. At which point, the series, for us, was already like in ankle-deep of season 2, specifically with the "Return of the Shredder", "It Came From Beneath the Sewers" & "The Case of the Killer Pizzas", episodes, respectfully. Remembered thinking how we, as a couple of unimpressed 11 & 10 y/o's were so deftly quiet, (if not so painfully shy), to fully react to what would eventually amount to the unstoppable juggernaut it was well on its way of becoming. One would like say that maybe we all were just secret closet fans with these characters, the show as a whole, but were openly ashamed to admit it. Yeah, I know, how sad were we? What eventually occurred, overtime, was that when the show finally hit the weekday format, most notably airing in the comfy 5 o'clock time slot, that's when we, personally, felt that the show had finally hit its stride! What with such memorable episodes, like: "Splinter No More", "Turtles on Trial" "Attack of the 50-Foot Irma", "The Old Switcheroo" & more! But perhaps what was THE MOST MEMORABLE EPISODES to have ever blown our collective minds, for me and my brothers, were those epic episodes that we were all NEVER privy to in its entire existence. Preferably the very 1st 5 episodes what started the show's eponymous hype since its initial beginning... "TURTLE TRACKS"-"SHREDDER AND SPLINTERED." That, for us, was, arguably, like THE BEST EVER, OUT-OF-THE-LOOP EXPERIENCE / HAPPY ACCIDENT for us that we could have ever been exposed to; because, in a lot of ways, it helped make for an incredibly, whole new FRESH SERIES to watch all over again, and the rest, as they say, is HEROES IN A HALF SHELL, history! P.S., although one of my personal favorite colors has always been red, MICHELANGELO was, by far, my personal favorite NINJA TURTLE!!!

I was first introduced to the TMNT from the original indie comics which were straight up legit. Eastman & Laird didn't pull any punches with their stories, the turtles were actual ninjas (meaning they killed people) and behaved more or less like real teenagers. More than just the art, the writing was also quite good. Even when things got really weird in space (yes, space) the story was still compelling enough to keep things exciting. From a marketing standpoint I understand turning TMNT into a kids property, but I will always remember them for that more realistic initial run.

I'm gonna say this: I was a 9 year old, NYC kid, sick at home during the school year in october of 1987 when the first five episodes of the original TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES cartoon first aired. It was around 8 or 9 in the morning on a tuesday, when I just happened to turn on the tv, and saw the intro to this insane looking show with green humanoid turtles dressed like ninja. The theme song was late 1980s perfection. I don't know if I was high off the cold medication or what, but I was immediately hooked. It was the most refreshing, and amazing thing my child self had seen up to that point in his life. This was a year before the show would be properly introduced to the mainstream and become pop culture history, as very few kids, if any, knew of the Turtles. I tried telling my classmates the next week when I went back to school about this show, but describing it couldn't do it justice. Remember, I was a 9 year old at the time, and a year felt like 5 years in kid time, so when autumn of 1988 rolled around, here was the commercial for the show premiering in like two weeks. I was like "HOLY SHIT!! I REMEMBER THIS SHOW!!!", that's literally what I said to myself. Then when the show premiered we saw the commercial for the original action figures, and I almost blew a fucking head gasket. The original Leonardo action figure was my very first Ninja Turtle merchandise ever, and I would go on to have alot of fucking TMNT toys in my childhood. Don't get me started on the original TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES live action film from 1990. That shit blew my fucking mind. The TMNT was the last major toy craze of my childhood, and undoubtedly the most impactful one of my life, as it lasted the longest, and was the most successful of that era. I still love the turtles, and buy turtle figures to this day.

I remember one Saturday morning, doing my usual wake and bake, and seeing the intro for a new Turtles cartoon. I said what the hell, ain't nothing else on right now! After that amazing intro, they launched into the episode and I was hooked! I hadn't had any interest in Turtles since I was a kid and there I was watching a new cartoon. Every episode was better than the last and, much like you, I became a fan all over again. I stuck in until the series took them to the future and I bowed out as the series had went to garbage at that point. I did love the Turtles Forever flick though.

As much as people hate on the third live action movie of the 90s , it's still one of my favourites. I was just a little kid and aside from the turtles, I was also obsessed with samurai films. To me it was a perfect mix of the two. Not to mention the wicked looking series of action figures released around that time that incorporated characters that weren't even in the film. Its goofy and at times just plain stupid, but I still love it. The scenes with Casey teaching the displaced samurai how to play hockey was incredible.

The first Nickelodeon series may be my favorite version of TMNT. A seamless involvement of all the movies, series, comics, and even the most obscure action figures, and with the best character design that I've seen since Real Ghostbusters. "Pizza Face" became hive-mind psychic gobs of sentient pizza-y matter. "Tokka" became a giant lava kaiju from outer space, and it all fit. One of the Kraangs even made a Megan Fox joke.

I haven’t loved all them, but I understand that they keep the franchise fresh. I loved the TV show and toys and bought every issue of the Archie comic I could get my grubby little hands on. Two things I learned: A Ninja Turtles tabletop game existed, and the Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers did a crossover. That's awesome. I'm still holding out hope that they'll do a Ninja Turtles RPG. Turn-based combat would be great, but I would settle for one in the vein of X-Men Legends or Tales of.

this was my favorite cartoon to watch as a kid. I use to come home and every afternoon at 3 PM from monday to Friday, a TV show called "The DJ Cat show" aired on Sky one. it showed cartoons like TMNT and Inspector gadget and such, it was really fun. I actually own every episode of this cartoon. I think cartoons that kids watch today are so silly, they are badly drawn compared to the cartoons from the 80's and early 90's. sure, there were some coloring errors in the cartoon, sometimes Donatello had a red mask, that happened a few times that they would have the wrong color on their masks or the wrong voice, but hey, it was the 80's, still better than today. I owned so many of the toys, this and GJ Joe, we called the "Action force" men, don't know why GI Joe was called that. but anyways, I owned a lot. I think I still have them on a box, unless I gave it away, I might have.

I’ve seen most of this channel’s videos about 80’s dumb toy cartoons. Here in Brazil we never had any of these cool toys and yet they were massive hits. I think this demostrate how those shows like Turtles, He-Man, Power Rangers stood on their own and were way more than just toy commercials

Excellent work. I really enjoyed this. I remember not being able to find any of the toys, and happened upon them in an out of the way toy store. My Nephew slept that night with one in each hand! The memory still makes me smile!

This action franchise is remarkable. They started off as a dark and gritty comic, then they became a Saturday Morning Cartoon, then they were Jim Henson Muppets, an action-packed and violent cartoon, a series of intense idw comics, a random cg movie, a Nickelodeon Mascot, a Michael Bay film, and now they're doin stuff with DC. There will always be Marvel & DC fans, but Tmnt is an epic masterpiece of its own, and will always stand as one of the greatest creations of all time.

again, LOOOOVE that RPG, love those original comics( so much that I keep buying it in any form it comes out.... and i should stop really) that rpg is amazing, that story is amazing, unfortunately i always felt it was lightning in a bottle, even tho i am 40, i never kliked those cartoons, and yes i did like the movie cause i was young enough to want it, but it wasn't as good as those first few issues.

sixto reynoso I totally agree. The original comics and the rpg where awesome and so cool! Then when the cartoon came it quickly went downhill from all that cool that came before

agreed, the Archie comic run used to make me angry LOL but it did give enough life to the characters that i think brought a big light to the original material thus allowing for more nicer reprints of the comics with the extra stuff and stuff like the amazing NECA figures. necessary evil?

I read that the TV guy that approached them was from Harmony Gold "owners?" of RoboTech and that Palladium games helped introduce them after Palladium wanted to get the RoboTech license, and naturally showed off the other games they had made

Christopher Vogler make sense. I played them both, likes TMNT better so I would apply weapons and some vehicles from one to the other. You guys are making me want to pull that out and start a campaign lol

I was 11 years old when I found out about the turtles. My mother worked at a place called "Movie Gallery". She brought home all kinds of movies and games for my sisters and I to enjoy. One days, she gave me a DVD of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon which had the first season and last season. I owned most of the movies and watched "The Next Mutation" some time later. I started watching the 2012 series shortly after season 1 began. I was very excited for the 2014 and 2016 movies and loved them both. I also enjoyed Rise of TMNT as well. Last year, I discovered the 2003 series and watched every episode just before "Batman VS Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" came out. I loved the turtles and was very inspired by the creators so much, I started writing my own fan fictions that included 3 stories, a fan-made TV series, and a comic series of my own. I really do hope to meet Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird someday because they are the real heroes in a half shell and it would just be such a honor. 💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤

Awesome history. I first saw the original cartoon - censored for the UK, where 'Ninja' became 'Hero' and nunchuks were not allowed to be shown (stabby swords were fine).

@@SecretGalaxyTV Thatcherism at it's finest. Thing is, I'd also seen the title "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and was confused as hell as to what the difference was with "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles", so yeah, censoring the word "ninja" really didn't seem to work that well.

I grew up with the 80s Turtles show and still maintain that the 2012 series is the most entertaining TV adaptation of TMNT we've had thus far. I haven't seen the newest reboot yet, but it looks more like Powerpuff Girls. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but we'll see.

I remember getting my very first TMNT action figure in a gift exchange back when I was in preschool, which was a figure the original Raphael (albeit the one with a hard plastic head instead of a soft squishy head). :D

I was hooked on the TMNT cartoon as a kid. I had figures of all the core characters including multiple foot soldiers, the party wagon, some cheapskates as well as a complete technodrome. I bought all the Archie published comics from the 7-11 nearby my house and then when the popularity of the TMNT started waning and I was getting older I discovered the original Mirage comics and the Palladium RPG and that kept me going knowing that there were more mature stories and TMNT wasn't just kids stuff. Thankfully that OG Mirage stuff helped me ignore the atrocities that were the Next Mutation, 3rd movie and Coming Out of Their Shells. I had a direct subscription to the Mirage TMNT comic all they way to it's final issue. I really enjoyed the 2003 reboot for it's faithfulness to the original Mirage comic and followed that all the way until the 2012 reboot and really enjoyed that one too. The new one... eh, I'm not too sure about it but I thought that about the 2012 reboot until it proved me wrong. We'll see when the show actually airs.

My first encounter with the turtles was a commercial for the original 87 miniseries airing. My tiny child brain saw way more than 4 turtles, and I remember them eating pizza. I also remember thinking my mom wouldn’t let me watch it, although she never said that. It wasn’t until I saw Michelangelo hanging from a peg at toys r us that it really clicked with me.
