Tried buying a wool jacket from ziggy and found they all have synthetic blend components along with Uma wangs clothing. Very disappointing, love the colours and tonality but unfortunately still haven't bought from them

Very interesting, I think we mostly see this as time goes on because of factory production (sadly). That is still why designers such as Paul harnden or JAS have a slight leg up over Uma and ziggy. However, very important though to respect and understand each designer within their respective space, hopefully one day you can get something.

this is avant garde? how does the fashion world use that term, sounds like mr Chen was actually readily accepted

I love this question! It is something that I have wondered for quite awhile myself… that this genre of fashion needs a separate name for itself. Maybe we can come up with something more fitting to what it is. Of course I would want it to encompass: Skelton, ccp, Elena, ziggy, umma, etc…

@@NoOneElse i’m not so sure about your selection… Eg ccp is notoriously conceptual & counter to the runway cycle, but the others are obviously not. the lack of proper criticism (as in the ‘criticism’ in ‘art criticism’) in fashion is lamentable imo. i haven’t seen anyone (at all!) put proper effort in untangling contemporary fashion’s formal features, concepts, etc! as for who would count as avant garde per se… maybe Kawakubo, since her label has ironically become synonymous with ‘undefinable,’ but even she is accepted by everyone, i think.

@toku1846 I think the idea of a designer being acceptable or not gives a good benchmark in this case for why they shouldn’t be classified as avant-garde. My concern that arises though is would this then create to many niche subsections of an already very niche genre of fashion? My intention would be to create a classification that doesn’t necessarily scare away those who want to learn about them. Or maybe a classification is quite unnecessary in the first place.

@@NoOneElse i find it hard to understand your selection so i think it's really on you to look inward & figure out what unites them in your sense. &sense is the basis of art, after all. maybe something like, it interests you when attention is given to showing the properties of natural textiles & textile manipulations. all the surface incidents of e.g. leather or (naturally) dyed linen force you to see the material & consider it. not-so vis-a-vis (large-scale) uniform industrial dying, or the smooth surfaces of industrial weaves. i think at least that counts for ccp, ziggy, uma, etc... i'm not as familiar with these labels as you. i'd be interested in hearing your perspective on it
