The History and Culture of New Orleans is undeniably unique. Cajun, Creole, African, and European cultures mix to create a true "one-of-a-kind" city. And this one-of-a-kind city has a one-of-a-kind celebration - Mardi Gras.
Every year, over one million people flock to the streets of New Orleans to experience Mardi Gras. But, where did this strange celebration come from? What is its purpose? And how did it end up in New Orleans, Louisiana?
In the 60-minute, High-Definition, television special, The History & Traditions of Mardi Gras, we explore the unique festival of New Orleans' Mardi Gras. We unearth its pagan origins and reveal how the ancient Greeks, the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church have influenced it. We expose the secret societies of Mardi Gras, whose members perform bizarre customs while cloaked in elaborate costumes and masks. And we explain some of the fabled traditions of Mardi Gras, such as tossing hand decorated coconuts from parade floats and baking a plastic baby into King Cake.
New Orleans' historians, Mardi Gras experts, artisans, tourists, and locals, all contribute their voice and their spirit to The History & Traditions of Mardi Gras.
Featured interviews include:
• Wayne Phillips, curator, The Presbytere "Mardi Gras" Museum.
• Arthur Hardy, author, "Mardi Gras in New Orleans", and "Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide".
• Blaine Kern, aka "Mr. Mardi Gras", owner, Kern Studios, and Mardi Gras World.
• Mark Perelli, float builder, Kern Studios.
• Don Fraser, mask maker, Serendipitous Masks.
• Fr. R. Tony Ricard, priest, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
• Tom Fitzmorris, food critic, talk radio host, WWWL.
• David Haydel, Jr., owner, Haydel's Bakery.
Mardi Gras is a festival that is celebrated on four continents and has been influenced by many different civilizations and cultures. New Orleans' Mardi Gras definitely reflects its own unique style and flair. The History & Traditions of Mardi Gras declares that New Orleans' Mardi Gras is an artistic celebration of fun, food and family.

@valmarsiglia
@valmarsiglia 6 лет назад
To add to @terrell mack's answer, they originally come from the Russian house of Romanov -- the colors were chosen during the first Rex parade in the 1870s when the crown prince of Russia was visiting (his traveling companion was George Custer, of all people).

Still there is no truth to this Mardi Gra video . Carnival parades was brought to New Orleans from Mobile , Al .The first parading Krewe in New Orleans was started by the Cowbellion De Rankin Society from Mobile.
@valmarsiglia
@valmarsiglia 6 лет назад
Well, no, there was one member of that society, but the group included mainly New Orleanians who created the Krewe of Comus, the oldest of the NOLA krewes.

There was no Alabama back then. Mobile, a part of Louisiana existed. (Cowbellion De Rankin Society) Okay, I done "bit" on that one. Good job. Love the sarcasm. Cowbellion De Rankin Society and as if any group would name something that funny.

@@boyofthesouth5327 But you were part of Louisiana back then. It became so crappy, we dumped Alabama. I suppose the Mardi Gras people decided to hit the road too. N.O. Mardi Gras comprises of locals and especial families. What am I going to do in Mobile an entire weekend? Go see an old navy ship a small fort? That's why when you here about fun of Mardi Gras on the News, it's always New Orleans or Rio. But Mobile???? Real the Mardi Gras? PATRICE ROGRRS I'm from New Orleans and i know that Mobile brought the concept of American mardi gras to N.O., BUT i know that the same concept was brought to Mobile from Philadelphia by someone from the Mummer's society. When the French settled on the southern tip of Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico, they established the FIRST mardi gras on an island there since it was at the same time that "carnival" was being celebrated in France long before it was celebrated in Mobile, the Capitol of Louisiana.

This is pancake day also knowing as shrove Tuesday a pagan tradition celebrated in England so These traditions are celebrated all on the same days in the world with a different name. How do they celebrate this as a Christian holiday when its is full of dress up, sexually immorality and made up (gods) lent is also pagan and not from God but its nothing new to us although I know there will be people who absolute hate that these people are not listening to Gods word and what he asks us to do. Life is not a celebration of men and women dressing us we are to wear our clothing as brother Paul was inspired by The Holy Spirit wrote through Him King James Bible But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
