The Hitcher is one of those movies that never found the success or acclaim that it deserved. It's one of the few movies that I would say confidently is a masterpiece of it's genre.

In regards to THE HITCHER 1986.... It is one of the most bad-ass movies ever made! "'My mother told me never to do this.'", is one of the most iconic opening lines to any movie ever as well. I figured that the Theater Movie Rating Board had forced THE HITCHER to remove most of the cool violence as well back then. It never shows what John Ryder had done to the people in the VW, the station wagon towing the boat, and the pick-up truck.

I laughed at the Roger Ebert's and Gene Siskell's crazy movie reviews saying that the movie was, "'Perverted gay sadism and gay masochism" or whatever. 🤣🤣🤣 I think that Ebert and Siskell were taking their so-called jobs as "'Movie Reviewers'" way too seriously. No wonder why no one cared about their comments.😁💯✅

Pretty much yes since they even got Rutger Hauer on Batman Begins. You can say The Hitcher is the movie version of The Killing Joke since the concept shows how a normal kid like Jim Halsey is driving into madness or as the joker say, *All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy*

I love how movies like this leave a lot to be imagined, because they are not clearly explained in the movie. Like why John Ryder is doing what he is doing. Why he chose Jim to accomplish what John really wanted. (At least that’s the way I look at it) the only other movie that did this is “No country for old men” another excellent movie!

I had seen this movie in bits and pieces but finally watched it in it's entirety a few months ago and loved it. The opening is one of the best in Horror and John Ryder is a heavily underrated villain. Hauer's performance is so maniacal but he's not over the top making it extra scary. The sick relationship he and Jim develop is so creepy. Howell's performance is just as captivating as we watch him evolve throughout the movie, thanks to the mayhem and torture Hauer puts him through. Also those kills are executed perfectly as they're not gore-tastic but simply imply more than you're actually seeing. TL;DR Hauer & Howell are amazing, Movie is awesome 👌 Great Review Cody!

One of my favorites I've always had on DVD. Haven't watched in a long time. Spoiler: I've always had to explain the ending to people I've watched it with, basically Rutger's character wants to die, but he wants someone he feels worthy to do it. C. Thomas Howell's character was the only one who never begged for their life but escaped, so Rutger sees him as the person who is worthy of killing him, he just needs to push him to do it.
@jwnj9716
@jwnj9716 2 года назад
And you can see it very clearly after Thomas Howell gets rids of him at the very beginning. Rutger wakes up and smiles. It's like "Yup, that's the kid who's gonna stop me....Now the fun begins". You can even throw in the supernatural stuff to his character.

Just discovered this movie two years ago. And I love the shit out of it. The cast was great, the story was great, and the camera work was amazing. I don't know what that critic was talking about. I believe that the end of it, Ryder saw Halsey was the person to end his psychotic rampage. Ryder wanted to die. The way he smiled at him showed he got what he wanted. Man, I've never felt more tense in my life when I watched this for the first time

So glad you covered The Hitcher. I love this movie. I saw it at probably too young of an age but oh well. I watched this with my Grandma like most of the first horror movies i ever saw that ended up turning me into an addicted fanatic today. I was 8 of 9 when i saw The Hitcher. You hit the nail on the head, such a simple concept, but executed on another level. It hasn’t been replicated again in my opinion and I’m not sure, in my opinion, anybody currently or then could have played Ryder like Rutger. It would have been a lesser movie for sure. He is an all time great.

Man, Cody, I just saw 'The Hitcher' and was blown away. Your analysis is spot on, so I subscribed to your channel. Bruh, excellent content. Here's my two cents on this cult classic: 'The Hitcher' is a modern-day western on the surface and an extreme horror at its core. John Ryder had a death wish, and Jim Halsey was the perfect guy to grant it. Why? Because Jim was the polar opposite of John; honest, compassionate, and giving. John bullied, manipulated, and terrorized him enough to transform him into a better version of himself, a guy with enough conscience to end his suffering. Theirs was a symbiotic relationship based on chance and necessity. Again, great review. I love this film.

I totally agree with you Cody, this movie is a masterpiece. I first saw it in 1986 in the theater and was blown away. The directing, acting, music, stunt work, etc. was masterfully executed. I remember watching the Siskel and Ebert review back then and once again not agreeing with just about everything they said ( I wasn't much of a fan them). They seemed to have missed the entire point of the film in my opinion. Finally, a UK company called Second Sight spent a lot of time and effort in restoring this film to a VERY high quality presentation complete with beautiful Dolby Atmos sound. I, of course, was one of the first in line to get my copy last month and I'm so happy with the finished product! Once again Cody, EXCELLENT review to one of my all time favorites over the years......

The Hitcher was always one of those films that consistently climbed in my ranking, each year it creeped higher and higher for me, last year I finally conceded this is one of my favourite horror films I was just slow to admit it; been in my top ten since and unlikely to be unseated ever imo. I love Howell and especially Hauer in this, the rapport/tension is pitch perfect. So glad to see your review for it Cody 😊 Interesting thought: there's another youtuber I asked to review this and he actually made a salient point, if you take away the title and look at it more closely, it could have been the prequel/set up to Mad Max with how it plays out. It's an intriguing concept that's stuck with me ever since. Now get on it and watch Duel!

I’ve already seen some people mention this here, so it’s not an original thought. However, there is no way that Nolan wasn’t inspired by this film while writing The Dark Knight. People go on about how that film feels like Heat. However, to me I’ve seen it as Heat meets The Hitcher. I love the Joker in Dark Knight, but there’s so many similarities between his character and John Ryder that I don’t think it’s a coincidence. I’ve read the comics, but the way that character in portrayed in that film feels closer to The Hitcher than anything else.

If we had a time machine, I'd love to see you debate Siskel and Ebert on this film. This could be Ebert's most epic fail since he rated 'The Graduate' one star. I agree with your assessment, this film was next level excellent. The two characters were almost like doppelgangers. I like when the one Officer says to Halsey- "There is something going on with you and that guy. I don't know what it is but there is something." Couldn’t agree more Cody. I put this and Near Dark in the same camp. Is The Hitcher a bit more popular? Sure. But I’ve always grouped these two movies together as amazing horror movies with excellent atmosphere, that are way under appreciated.

I love the late Rutger Hauer. He was brilliant, talented mysterious and drop dead gorgeous.

I first saw this on VHS when I was 14 in 1998. It was recommended to me by my local video store guy, I immediately fell in love with it. The part where his girl got ripped apart always stuck with me sheesh

I was 15 in 86 and saw this film at the Cinema. I fell in love with it. It's brilliant! I got it on Video tape a short while after and watched it so many times I can recite every word. Deserves so much more credit and should be a classic!

I swear, so many great horror movies I've seen have a human antagonist, this being a prime one. This movie, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Joy Ride, Wolf Creek, The Midnight Meat Train (kinda), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Roadgames, Targets, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Don't Breathe and Se7en. But there's plenty more out there than just those films.

First watched this when I was twelve and already a major horror fan. I had a crush on C Thomas Howell and Rutger Hauer. It stayed with me after watching unlike the majority of horror movies. I generally like stories that don’t leave loose ends but in this case it worked. Not explaining not overdoing the Ryder characters background or identity makes it so much more mysterious, creepy and affective.

Rutger Hauer reminds me a lot of Robert Mitcham. They both have that same intense mysterious and menacing charisma. There is a lot of intelligence and cunning behind their eyes and its mesmerizing.

This flick was one my dad let us watch in one if his few "don't tell your mother" situations. The french fry scene is molded into my brain forever! I'm curious as to your thoughts on the remake. As I can remember, it wasn't very good.

I loved Rutger Hauer from a teenager and have enjoyed this movie for many many years. Owned it on VHS and then on dvd. His lack of background development compliments his handsome and 'charming' persona for this. He was an excellent villain as well as an excellent hero in other things. I think it took a lot of elements from the 70s classic 'DUEL' with the ultimate mystery of literally NEVER seeing the villain. This one leaves the viewer with the sense that instead of being washed out and empty at the end, Jim Halsey has life still left in him. As for JJLeigh not wanting a lovescene, she is the same actress who had just been fully exposed in the movie Flesh and Blood, also with Rutger Hauer. Innuendo would suggest that they had a several years long affair and that would Explain her reticence. But perhaps it was an artistic choice. I believe he also had an ongoing relationship with Joan Chen with whom he appeared in several films.

I agree about your theory of this movie. I watched this recently and I admit I was expecting more from the hype. I do think John Ryder was pushing Jim Halsey of doing things that he does not want to do. Jim was just a scared kid who admitted “My mom told me to never do this.” The police admit that “this kid is not a killer.” The ending John makes him a killer.

I LOVE the road-thriller-horror sub genre. This and DUEL are two of my all time favorites. Joy Ride and Breakdown are also quite exceptional.

Absolutely...it reminds me so much of Duel...and Breakdown is easily one of my favourite films in this sub genre...it's fantastic. I watched Joy Ride for the first time last year and loved it...that's when I realized that this is a sub genre I genuinely enjoy.
