When doing tee work hitters will benefit from placing a focus on trying to consistently hit the middle of the baseball. By training to hit the middle of the baseball, hitters will have a smaller margin of error when it comes to miss hitting the baseball.
Ideally, hitters want to square up the middle of the baseball and produce hard hit line drives all over the field. By the same token, there’s nothing wrong with a hitter getting on top of the baseball and producing a hard hit ground ball that finds its way through or properly miss hitting the bottom of the baseball and producing a hard hit line drive that gets in the air and finds a gap.
What hitters don’t want is to focus on hitting the top of the baseball to the point where they start chopping down on the ball producing choppers or focus on hitting the bottom of the baseball to the point where they start creating tilt early in their swing producing fly ball outs.
As far as cage work goes, tee height line drives back through the middle or with some true slice or run to the opposite field are great, and line drives into the corners of the cage along with hard hit grounders should be considered as good misses. What hitters never want to feel in the cage are swings where they’re spinning off the baseball because their goal is to always hit through the baseball, and what hitters never want to see during their cage work are swings that produce results where the baseball is hitting the netting at the top of the cage.
