Katie Shady Yes... My best friend's oldest brother passed away very young, and he had always loved JRR Tolkien's work. When we were all very young, we would hike up to the woods wearing blankets as cloaks and carry sticks as swords. Her oldest brother would switch roles, sometimes playing the evil ork chasing us through the woods, or our grand protector from her second brother playing a great troll. This song and all of JRR Tolkien's work will always bring back bittersweet memories of days gone by, and of a friend and fellow brother who died too young - sad, but at the same time filled with happiness for the times we spent adventuring through middle earth. If only i could go back. But then...I guess that is the point of this song - "the road goes ever on and on" and now "I must follow if I can".

Roads go ever, ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shown, By streams that never find the sea. Roads go ever, ever on, Under cloud and under star, Yet feet that wandering have gone Will turn at last to home afar. Over snow by winter sown, And through the merry flowers of June, Over grass and over stone, Under the mountains in the moon. Roads go ever, ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shown, By streams that never find the sea.

Roads go ever, ever on, to the lands beyond the sea. On a white ship will I sail, watching shadows part for me. Leaving havens græy with rain, now the years have slipped away. Leaving friends with gentle pain, as they start another day. Roads I've traveled I must leave, for I've turned the final bend. Weep not empty tears, but grief, as the road comes to an end.

Roads go ever ever on, under cloud and under star, yet feet that wandering have gone, turn at last to Home afar. Roads go ever ever on, eyes that fire and sword have seen, and horror in the halls of stone, look at last on meadows green, and trees and hills they long have known. Roads go ever ever on, over a rock and under tree, by caves were never sun has shown, by streams that never find the sea, over snow by winter sown, and through the merry flowers of June, over grass and over stone, and under mountains in the moon. The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began, now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until the joins some larger way, where many paths and errands meet, and whither then I cannot say, The road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began, now far ahead the road has gone, let others follow it who can, let them a journey new begin, but I am at last with weary feet, will turn towards the lighted inn, my evening rest and sleep to meet. “The Olde Walking Song” by Bilbo Baggins.

"To Gandalf: As per your instructions, I am keeping this log of our journey through Mirkwood Forest. I shall make good use of it someday as a basis for my memoirs, which I intend to call: _There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Holiday._ The days are terrible, and the nights are impossible, for we are hungry and thirsty; the berries which grow here are hideous. Everything about this forest is unpleasant. One day we decided that someone should climb to the top of the tallest tree and have a look about. I couldn't argue--my contract is vague on several points. There are moments which can change a person for all time, and I suddenly wondered if I would ever see my snug hobbit-hole again. I wondered...if I actually _wanted_ to." Throughout the journey through the forest Bilbo tries to keep his spirits up, and those of his friends, with limited success. Everything sucks with virtually no exceptions. But as soon as he peeks his head out of the canopy and sees the beauty of the world around him, *that* gives him reason enough to continue going. Gets me every time.

its so awesome to see how many other people were inspired by the hobbit from a young age it has the most important lesson a kid could learn. it teaches you to see the beauty in this harsh, tough world without sheltering yourself from it and wasting your life. Bilbo sees life for what it really is and at first hes overhwelmed but by time he gets home hes changed forever. its good to et knocked down. it humbles you as Bilbo shows when he barely takes any of the gold that rightfully belonged to him and it made him more courageous and passionate about life. the greatest adventure song and the scene where he stuck his head out of the canopy of mirkwood and saw the black emperors (as they are called in the book) which is when this song plays i think.

+Peter Quinn Must agree with you there. We need to stop dwelling on the mistakes of our past, and move on with life. We spend all of our time trying to perfect ourselves, make ourselves perfect with good looks, or followers on some social media website, when all you really need to do is be kind, and friendly to everyone around you. People look at the bad things going on, the disease, and famine, wishing they could do something. They can, go donate in a canned food drive, or go help in an animal shelter. There are so many bad things that we dwell on, when that time could be spent doing much better things. We need to live life being the best people we can be, and living it to the fullest. I like to keep this mindset, and I hope people read this comment and be inspired. Peace to the world, Awesometotoro123

Inspite of everything in this world that makes me sad, because I know too many dark things, even so, I can only love God for making it possible for The Journey to exist, no matter how twisted everything has become here. Eventually we'll find the river that leads to the sea, but I hope no one has to go into Outer Darkness. This song strangely enough reminded me of that.

I had this lp when I was a kid. I loved this soundtrack and cartoon….but this song. Everytime, this song came on….i had to pull the needle up off the lp. The feeling I got was of sadness and ending. It was as if the adventure was at its end. I wanted the adventure to keep going. At 5 years old ….I understood the message the song was trying to convey. Now I listen back….and am amazed that a song could convey so much feeling and message. I forgot about this till recently…..music is quite amazing…..thank you.❤

A couple years ago, a very vivid memory of the scene where Thorin puts out the fire on Bilbo's butt suddenly popped into my head. I remembered sitting with my family and watching that scene as a kid, but I couldn't remember anything else about the movie to be able to pinpoint which movie it was (all I could remember was this scene, and not which film it was from). After some research, I began to suspect it was from this film. Today I watched the movie out of curiosity and lo and behold, there was the scene! A couple of other scenes started to ring bells too, and I am so relieved that after years of wondering, I finally know which movie my family watched that night when I was little. (I also have memories of my family watching Flight of Dragons around the same time. Guess we had a bit of a Rankin/Bass marathon, haha)

Life's like a road that you travel on When there's one day here and the next day gone Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand Sometimes you turn your back to the wind There's a world outside every darkened door Where blues won't haunt you anymore Where the brave are free and lovers soar Come ride with me to the distant shore We won't hesitate, break down the garden gate There's not much time left today This is "Life is a Highway", but it's also very Bilbo.

@Marek Zeman Both songs are based on "The Road Goes Ever On", a song Tolkien himself made for Bilbo. There's several versions of it in the books, the one in this video is almost word for word the one in the book "The Hobbit".

Well, it sounds without doubt like a folk song from the 70s, that's for sure.

No offense to that kid on tik Tok but this is so much better than his version, I hate that people are just now starting to listen to Glenn, he's amazing.

I want these lyrics on my headstone, with a Tree of Gondor and the Seven Stars overhead. And a road that winds all over. Until it reaches a ship at sea.

I loved both the book and this movie as a kid, and re-experiencing them now (in order to introduce my young niece), the most surprising thing was that there were so many songs in the book. I love the Rankin & Bass soundtrack, of course, but at least from that snippet it seems that the new Hobbit may do an even better job.

Though shortened, still 1000 times better than Howard Shore’s adaptation of the song! Straight forward and gets the song’s heart!

Not only was the creator of this song J.R.R Tolkien a genius with words but who else but Ralph bakshi could have made a movie of this brilliant writers creation. Truly with such brilliant masters of their craft we could not have gotten anything but a masterpiece. A shame that the live action films come nowhere close to these beautiful cartoons.

I can't wait for the live action version to come out, and return once again to Middle Earth. Also, this song deserves to be in it, this song is definitely something this version got right, to this day I still find it touching.

I was watching Fellowship of the Ring again the other day, and I noticed that (I think it was Sam) was singing part of this song. I bet it was a direct reference to this Animated rendition by Peter Jackson.
