How old is Gandalf? Gandalf is a being called a Maiar, which is a kind of demi-god. He is as old as the universe, though he took on the guise of an old man (as did all of the Istari, or wizards) when he was sent to Middle-Earth to aid the free peoples in their fight against Sauron. He is forbidden from displaying his full power or to match Sauron directly. His role is to aid, counsel and inspire the people of Middle-Earth.
