Interesting fact: When Gandalf (then Olórin) was chosen to be one of the Istari, he didn't want to go, because Sauron scared the crap out of him. He didn't think he'd be strong enough to combat such a foe. The Valar said it was this humility that made him the perfect choice.

It’s fitting because Sauron craves for order, as his Master Morgoth, the former Valar and first Dark Lord, craves ruin and destruction, Sauron is driven by order, admiring the Elves most of all. His original plan was to bring unity to Middle Earth through the Rings of Power, as they originally intend to control the leaders of each race, allowing Sauron to rule through them But the Elves foresaw the treachery and took off their Rings, the Dwarves the most resilient of the races, resisted his control but became greedy, most of the Dwarf Rings were lost or destroyed Only the 9 rings of men were successful, creating the Nazgul To Sauron the Orcs, Darkness, were all means to an end to achieve Order under his control

Matthew 11:15 KJV He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Are you saved? Where will you go when you die? Heaven or hell? The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell. John 1:1,14 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. [14] And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, 1 John 3:8 KJV He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Isaiah 9:6 KJV For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT.

Loved this scene; everything about it was a perfect demonstration of a villain. Gandalf demanding to know where the Necromancer was, desperately hoping it wasn't who he thought. A wave of darkness that tauntingly feels around Gandalf's shield of light, letting him think momentarily he has a chance, then in a single hit, completely shatters the shield. An unseen force lifts him and forces him to watch the unspoken nightmare that has plagued thousands of people so long ago; the return of the Enemy slowly approaching him, each step demonstrating how he has only grown in power since his triumph over death.

He held more power because his powers were not diminished. In the book commentaries to the Lord of the Rings, Istari (magi, mages) are the Maiar, who took the flesh of humans as their form to diminish their own power and thus to avoid the battle of Powers and the second destruction of Arda. Therefore one Maya in human form could not overcome a dark Maya (be it Balrog or Sauron). Gandalf managed to fight off and destroy Balrog but died in the process. In 1vs1 battle with Sauron spirit Gandalf also lost.

EdricLysharae I think Gandalf’s motivation was to discover who the Necromancer was and to ultimately expose him. Ever since the earlier discovery of the Morgul blade, he had a sneaking suspicion that it was indeed Sauron residing at Dol Guldur but he wanted to be absolutely sure. He knew he was walking into a trap but the guaranteed abduction that was sure to take place would summon more powerful beings who could ultimately go toe-to-toe with Sauron once he was exposed. The wizard turned himself into a “sacrificial lamb”...as he knew no one else had the time, will, or interest to investigate. His choice to remain inside of the fortress after confronting Azog (while reckless on the surface) was brilliant as he forced Sauron’s hand. He could have continued fleeing with the minimal information he had acquired from the Pale Orc...but hearsay wouldn’t be enough to sway Elrond and Saruman as after all...Orcs were known to take over abandoned fortresses for their own nefarious needs and as such...they would not be any real threat without a powerful leader to organize them. He would need to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth and thus; Gandalf had to find the source of the evil as well as be 100% certain that it was indeed the Servant of Morgoth. That took some serious guts if you think about it as he knew the result of the coming face off would be be capture, torture, and eventually death. Just my thoughts. God bless!

I remember seeing this in the theaters when it just came out. I never read The Hobbit so I thought that this Necromancer was a new villain that Peter Jackson created specifically for the movies. But when the music began at 2:20 I then realized that it was something much more sinister than a man dabbling in dark magic. At 2:50 I was stunned to realize that the Necromancer was something that was greater in evil and power, one whose ring held the fate of the entire free peoples of Middle-Earth: Sauron. I remember a lot of people gasping when they saw him. I was not prepared to see him after 10 years since The Return of the King. In my opinion this was one of the best scenes of the film.

Sauron is a magnificent character for sure. He was a lieutenant of Morgoth until the first age of the sun. Then, when Morgoth was defeated by the Valar, he got to scape and was capable to maintain her kingdom of horror in the second and third ages in Middle-Earth. Even the most powerful elves like Elrond and Galadriel feared him. In this scene, he wasn't with full strenght yet, but he defeated Gandalf breaking his staff to show his superiority in power.

Morgoth was indeed more powerful, but he diluted his power to his servants. His monster armies was far more powerful Than Sauron’s. Smaug was an arguable remant of that army and he was nearly invulnerable Morgoth was also more of a brute as his goal was basically to corrupt and ruin creation to spite Eru Illuvatar, his blazen atrocities caused the Valar to interfere and imprison Morgoth in the Earth Sauron even at his height may not been more powerful than Morgoth, but he was more dangerous because he was more cunning and patient Sauron expanded his power with the One Ring and used his cunning to outwit or destroy his enemies The prime example was Numenor, the then greatest Kingdom of Middle Earth Sauron then having his One Ring, could have destroyed it if he wanted to, but instead he did worse to it, he despite his power surrendered to Numenor, and played on their pride in capturing him He became from a prisoner to adviser of the King and seduced the Kingdom to worship himself and Morgoth. They fell so horribly the Valar Interfered and destroyed Numenor with a flood, denying Sauron their allegiance, but he still won in destroying. Numenor as an enemy, Even when he lost his power and body, he plots and rebuilds his armies as the world thought he was gone, and Nearly succeeded conquering Middle Earth without the Ring That highlights how much s threat Sauron was, Morgoth would simply destroy and corrode everything, Sauron would see the whole world is conquered with free will stripped, and he had the will to do it, only stopped because of plot armor and meddling heroes lol

This is one of my favourite, even one of top 10 scenes in Peter Jacksons Middle earth. Here's why: -Dol Guldur looks amazing as a dark fortress, long vines and thorns growing over the walls, the ruined towers and pillars, you can tell no one has been here in thousands of years likely, and so it really seems eerie -We see more of gandalf's magic here, he manages to break the spell of concealment, and it really shows the power the Necromancer has over the place, that he can hide the orcs so when it's broken they materialise out of nowhere -The sound of Mordor is amazing, really seems menacing -Sauron is shown here as godlike, which he is, he has no true form here and appears first as a mass of darkness, then a flaming hand, then as a flaming body in armour, he really seems dangerous and otherwordly -He's perfectly shown as a villain, no monologue, no evil laugh, he speaks only when needed and he's completely evil, Gandalf shows dread and fear here -Gandalf and Sauron battle with light and dark, perfectly representing him -Gandalf looks epic like you'd imagine a wizard to be -The way Sauron walks is great, you can't tell if he's physical form or merely a spirit, but he's calm and delibrate, no rashness The way there's no jokes here, it really feels serious and dark. -Continuing from the point, it works to show the scary and darker side of Middle earth, that really is needed since if not it would be too easily generic as good and cartoony evil, here you truly have dark places and evil, Sauron saying in the void there is only death is brilliant.
