@@ohsosilent from what I read on Wikipedia, the director of the original gremlins thought the movie had a satisfactory conclusion, and wasn't really interested in making a Gremlins 2. The studio wanted a sequel really bad, so they offered him triple the budget and complete creative control. He proceeded to make a film in which the intended purpose was to satirize the original gremlins, and to do as much crazy stuff he could that the studio would normally never allow, but did because they thought a sequel to Gremlins would be a money-printing machine. So if we are to take what Joe Dante the director said at face value, I think it means that he was playing the part of 80's sequel guy, while the writers represent the studio desperately trying to reign him in.

Cue to Gremlins new batch, how can a company with a blockbuster movie title can make even more money THAN with a movie? with toys, now how many toys do you wanna sell? A lot, how do you promote toys? Make characters in the huge succes movie. You cannot overstate how incredible, nuanced, and indelible this performance by Jordan Peele is. I've watched this so many times, and every time you see little quirks, subtle expressions and details that make it such a masterclass in creating a character that's both idiosyncratic and flamboyant without resorting to an outlandish caricature. Having lived and worked in Hollywood, I can tell you this kind of person definitely exists, and Jordan was able to reveal his amazing versatility and depth of acting and understanding of humans that resulted in such a memorable and believable persona. Bravo!

@Aron Travis I think what he meant by you can't overstate his performance is that he thought it was so good , that no matter how much you praise his performance it's still not overstating (Like for example saying "it's impossible that this movie can be overrated (= it's so brilliant ) ) I don't think there was much of a contradiction there. Cowboys in Back to the Future 3 makes perfect sense because a fucking time machine would be able to go to that era.
