I remember my father (bass) singing this while I accompanied him on the piano in the 1980s, and I had not heard it since. All the versions on RU-vid seem to be lacking the passion we put into it ! What is the connection to Christmas decorations? Surely it is an Easter sing, with darkness for the second verse, and triumphal light for the final verse?
@@richardsage4020 I’m going farther back, to the 1950s when my baritone-voiced father, accompanied by my pianist mother, sang it at all times during the year. I agree about it being a piece which is appropriate for Easter though.
We generally sing this at Easter rather than Christmas. That being said, this version by the Scott Brothers is appropriate all year through! Bravo, Gentlemen!

I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. Lovely production. I recall my gr-grandmother playing this piece on her upright. The family had a tradition of whenever visitor departed a home, they were always played out with some appropriate song. (Stumbling here but that's me.) Naturally, everyone sang along. Not an organ in the proper sense -a harmonium (reed organ). But your point is well taken. Two mics are needed. [edit] I relistened with AirPods and the harmonium comes through quite decently.
