Yes, I was skeptical about the Giant Leap ones too but they actually were quite informative and not dismissing Elon. I would love to see a much more detailed update series on fusion too. Please! :) There is so little information that I can find on the newest projects. And leave the technical stuff inside. The internet is full of space nerds now. The time of the need for child like explanations in youtube documentaries is over.

"Fusion is clean, it's green, it's safe." The same thing can be said for nuclear fission. Smaller and safer Gen 3 nuclear reactors should be being built now in the interim. Nuclear energy is currently our best solution to global warming while we wait for a breakthrough in nuclear fusion.

Am I sitting idly while my very continued existence is being threatened by the prospect of clean, limitless, inexpensive energy is being developed? We already have a safe, and from what it sounds like, cheaper energy source. Solar energy. All this talk about the government and private companies investing millions and billions into Nuclear seems to me like one of the main reasons the focus isn't on solar is because there isn't as much money to be made by the government. Solar doesn't produce radioactive waste, and I'm not going to have to worry about human error, infrastructure failure or some natural disaster that will cause a nuclear meltdown. Besides - after 50 years of experimenting with Nuclear energy, we still haven't gotten it perfect. Solar energy has been perfected - and it's something we can safely implement now and not wait until the 2030's.

Interesting video, which I enjoyed, but some very sloppy script in the narration. A plasma is not "molten". A plasma does not contain ions. A plasma is so highly energised that all of the electrons have been stripped off their atomic nuclei, leaving only completely disassociated nuclei and electrons moving around at great speed. If the fuel is hydrogen, then the atomic nucleus is a single proton, but if a more exotic fuel is used, such as Helium-3, then the nucleus will comprise of 2 protons and one neutron.

Governments and corporations have not put much time and investment into fusion research because fossil fuels make too much money.

Nothing really is science fiction, there is always that small possibility that it can be done. The question is when and how?

I read that the radioactivity of a continual fusion process would hopelessly irradiate the machine and everything around it in a very short time. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it. I mean are they going to build an ozone layer around it?

without gravity to aid in the process [as in the sun], doesnt us trying to recreate the process break the rules of thermodynamics/physics in general?

No, they explain why in the video. That's why we need upwards of 150million degrees celcius whereas the sun needs 10-25million. The sun has gravity to help the atoms get closer together and collide. We don't have that luxury on earth, hence the higher temperatures.
