My old pastor used to say "we are not an all must" church when it comes to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. My pastor couldn't speak in tongues but he had other gifts that were evident, I can speak in tongues but I don't have some of the other gifts. If someone says tongues is the only evidence that's wrong, Paul said he would love to have everyone to speak but if you don't have love it doesn't matter

Well said Pastor Bob. I believe in getting the Holy Spirit, but in the bible tongs was just done once in the upper room. There everyone of different languages understood by all. I can't seem to believe jibberish is the lord speaking. Thank you for your wisdom and God bless.

I believe that 1st Corinthians, chapters 12 and 13 are the greatest answer to this question. We all have to covet for this BEST GIFT, and Paul told us it is not tongues, and it is not prophecy - eventhough these are surely wonderful gifts. If you read that 13th chapter, you get the idea :) But the key to that chapter is in the last verse of the 12th chapter. God bless y'all!

In the new testiment, it said that when the Holy Spirit came into the disciples, they started speaking different REAL languages (like Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Greek... etc.), even the oldest meaning of the word "tongues" means *useful* spoken languages (not gibberish). Speaking gibberish and convulsing on the ground is not an example of speaking in tongues (as in speaking other *real* languages).

My brother in law is pentecostal, and my wife and I are Nazarene. Makes for some interesting debates. We have been going over Pentecost in service, and basically what I get out of it, is that they were able to speak in languages they did not know, so that men of other nations could hear the word of God, and understand. What good would it do to speak a language no one else can understand but you?

Wiccans, roman catholics, mormons, hindus, and pentecostals have the EXACT same type of "tongues." How do you interpret this? Tongues were/are known, earthly languages, and not gibberish. Those who do it are either faking it, or have a demonic spirit in them. Either way, they go against scripture.

This is from the book, "Gifts of the Holy Spirit" by Kenneth E. Hagin. "...Paul said, "Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led." These people previously had worshipped idols. In this idol worship, motivated by the wrong spirit, they said a lot of things in error. Church history tells us that some of them came into the Christian assembly, and when the Spirit of God began to manifest Himself, they would say things under the influence of the wrong spirit. Some of them even would arise in the service when the gifts of inspiration and utterance were in operation and would say that Jesus was accursed. Paul said that when the Holy Spirit is in operation, He will proclaim Jesus Lord." That adds a whole new aspect to it. People can operate in the gift that God gave them under the influence of another spirit. I wonder if that's how psychics and terrot card readers operate. It would be like the equivalent of a prophet but on the evil side. God gave both of them the gift of the word of knowledge but one uses it for good and the other uses it for evil. And the same for the gift of healing. Witch doctors would be using the equivalent gift of the Gift of Healing but using the wrong spirit to do it. What do you think Pastor Bob? I don't want the church to be ignorant when it comes to these things. Some people know nothing about spiritual gifts, or that they even exist. Do you think that there is an equivalent gift for the "dark side" as the gifts of what God gives? Because it is already clear in 1 Corinthians 12:1-14 that God has provided spiritual gifts to give to us as the holy spirit leads.

The false speaking in tongues of today, has been confused with the tongues of confusion God Cursed babylon with ages ago. They sought THEIR OWN way into heaven back then. As back then, today they are only babbling as those of babylon were made do back then. Today, many receive the delusion that was also prophesied in the bible instead of the gift. The TRUE tongues is evidenced in the book of Acts when they spoke & those of other languages miraculous understood as if it was their own language.

People believe that we are born with "immortal" spirits, but we are not! Adam and Eve had the chance to embrace the TREE OF LIFE, but they were cut off from the Tree of Life after they tasted the fruit of the tree of knowledge. God cut them off because at that point they would have become spiritually immortal in a state of corruption. But Our Heavenly Father had a way to thwart Satan's attempt to subvert His (meaning God's) plans for mankind.

There are different forms or reasons for speaking in tongues. We all receive the Holy Spirit the same as we receive the Father when we Accept the Son. If you don't believe that then you don't believe in the trinity. Pastor Bob never mentioned baptism in the spirit which is something different than receiving, and is evidenced by speaking in tongues (which is just your prayer language). The reason everyone doesn't start blurting out tongues when they receive the Spirit is because it is a gift' not a requirement. But really, why wouldn't you want a gift that God wants to give to you?! Just depending on the person, sometimes having others lay hands on you to receive can help facilitate, but it's really more like cheering someone on or sometimes it's like standing guard to keep Satan from trying to stop them from it. there is an amazing freedom that comes with it that just can not be explained in words. I think one misunderstanding isn't that we think everyone should do it, it's just that it is such an amazing experience that we want all our brothers and sisters to experience it too. It's like that feeling you get when you first get saved and want to scream it out to the world how awesome it is, unfortunately most people don't want it and tell you to take a hike. So I have total respect and do not look down on anyone who doesn't want it, I just really want you to feel this amazing thing from God! I love and admire you Pastor Bob! Keep preaching the word!

people are confusing the Gift of tongues with The gift of the Holy spirit. Two different things. EVERYONE , when filled with the Holy spirit WILL speak in tongues. This is the sign to you and witnesses that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit. The gift of tongues is the ability to speak in tongues for the edifying of others. Read these scriptures. Notice the speaking in tongues was from being filled with the holy Spirit. If you have not spoke in tongues then you were not filled with the Holy Spirit. Many people get the Spirit around them and they get a good feeling and feel the presence of God but they don't continue seeking Him and get filled with it because they don't know any better. They continue to let others who are in the dark, tell them they are saved. After that good feeling wares off many will fall away because they have no power. Many will continue on believing they are saved and continue to sin thinking well, no body is perfect. Many in that day shall say Lord, Lord, we have cast out demons in your name, but I shall say unto them depart from me for I never knew you. Seek this out. you'll find the truth. If not, you have your reward. Mark 16:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 6:6 They presented these seven to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. Acts 8:17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and exalting God. Then Peter said,

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:4 In 1 Corinthians 13:1 the Apostle Paul says, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” So just what is “Tongues of Angels”? First let me say that I mean no disrespect to my friends that follow the teachings of the Pentecostal church. There is honestly no evidence in which the uttering a series of rapidly-spoken, indiscernible syllables is proof of a “heavenly” tongue, or that a person is saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. When the word “tongue” is used apart from referring to the organ in our mouths, it means language. There is no single reference in the Bible where an Angel appeared to a person and spoke in an indiscernible ecstatic way. Rather when Angels appeared with a message from the LORD GOD they were very articulate and accurate when they spoke. Many people desire outward evidence of their transformation from sinner to saint, and in fact there is such evidence; it is called the fruit of the spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23). I have personally witnessed those new to the faith completely dismayed and confused by those who claimed supernatural gifts such as gibberish tongues, and spontaneous healings. I certainly believe that God can and does heal according to prayer and simply at His own choice to do so. I do not believe that any living human has the same gifts and abilities as Christ and His disciples had, it is my belief that those particular gifts ended in the apostolic age. “Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Corinthians 13:8
