I remember behind the scenes Jonathan Taylor Thomas wanted to do more dramatic themes on the show (this show of all shows), and I think he was even gutsy enough to suggest an episode where Randy questions his sexuality and Tim Allen nixed it by saying "But that's not what our show is about"... I can't remember if Jonathan then left shortly after or not but I feel bad because he really wanted to spread his wings and he got deterred.

Home Improvement was and will always be a great show to watch. Cheers, Fraiser, King Of Queens, Roseanne, Golden Girls, and Seinfeld were all great shows, the late 80s and 90s had great sitcoms

4:46 OMG I tear up every time I see this sequence. For all his faults as a husband and as a Dad, he made up for his mistakes here. Randy needed someone to lean on, and Tim was there for him, reassuring him when he was needed most. Yeah, I have had to wait for The Phone Call before, praying for the best but bracing for the worst. My wife got breast cancer, and trying to be a good wife to her, I have been by her side every step of the way. Every triumph and every setback, I have been there with her. As hard as this has been, I cannot imagine having to find out one of the kids has cancer.

I’ve always thought goiter was one of the funniest words ever. And I’m a nurse.

The scary thing for me is that 15yrs later my father was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which was terminal by the time they found it (he had similar symptoms to Randy) but he still kicked its ass for 5 1/2 yrs when he was given 2-2 1/2 weeks.Moral of the story don't ignore symptoms because you're scared of what it COULD be, find out asap so you have more options to explore with treatments!!

Honestly, this episode has stuck with me since I watched the original broadcast. When my grandmother was diagnosed with a goiter, the entire goiter schtick went through my head. I felt like Tim's reaction to the situation (humor, funny or no) was very true-to-character & they did a good job of showing how different people react to the same situation.

For those of us that remember the internet like that, know to sign in it took like 10 mins then another 5 mins for the first page to load. Pages took forever to load if the page had more than two photos. If it was text only it really wasnt that bad.

Honestly this still made me cry watching this video. My grandpa died of cancer and it was the worst thing ive ever had to see in my life. He fought it for 24 years. Longer than ive been alive. I can remember holding his lifeless body after he passed, and feeling so conflicted because as much as i hated that he was gone i was relieved. He died unable to speak, or move. In bed for months. Suffering for years. Surgery after surgery for my whole life. Watching the strongest man I knew pass was the hardest thing in the world. Hearing him tell me it was time that he give up was the worst thing i could have ever heard him say. In the moments after he died i held him and sat beside him for hours till they came to take him. I walked out beside him, as he left the house he built from the groung up. I spoke at his funeral. Humor is the only way my family got through it. Remembering the happy times, the funny things that happened. Its truly a force to be reckoned with. The day he lost his humor was the day we knew this was the final battle, and the day we started to laugh again was the day we started to heal.

He’s not stupid. He’s a worried father trying to comfort his scared son :(

I remember watching the commercial for this episode, and then the episode itself. Even bad episodes are good nostalgia.

I don't get why Tim Allen and his wife didn't get that his son was merely joking about his death by tumor. The laugh track was very clear on that.

This was an incredibly good episode. 'Home Improvement' usually was not about episodes like this, _but_ its an incredibly meaningful one. IF I were to have a son or daughter WHO COULD have f-ing CANCER in their f-ing childhood!? Yeah... I'd automatically write an excuse letter for my kid's teacher... He or she would get an f-ing PASS from school, for _24 hours_ . :.)
