Nicely done. Bottom line is this and other bland cars that try too hard are designed to appeal to the majority of buyers that are essentially looking for an appliance. It's a market segment that want to buy transportation and essentially forget about it for 100k miles. Nothing wrong with that, recognized by all the mfg.

Another great review, thanks Mark. The TV ad is beyond embarrassing, as the Kona's overwrought exterior. I'm grandad-aged, still happy to drive my partner's orange Mini, but wouldn't be seen dead in something so contrived as the Kona.

In the competitive market of RU-vid car reviewers you continue to lead the pack and make the others look a bit twee and old-fashioned. But with great power comes great responsibility; don't parrot that line about electric cars being a niche concern. You know bettererer! That 'niche concern' angle only gets traction because it's lazily repeated with some half-arsed asides about charging infrastructure and battery longevity which are not accurate in 2019. You seem to have enjoyed many of the EVs (and some of the PHEVs) you've driven, so by all means call out the limitations but don't sink to the primitive level of some of your peers and write off the massive EV market as being niche right now. You are a progressive beacon of hope, humility and humour in the ego-dominated, post-fact, serious-interweb-car-reviewer age. Please continue doing your thing but use your legit-ness-ness to set yourself apart and big up EVs if you think they deserve it. If I witness any further anti-EV bias I will seek you out and personally pay for the most hideous EVs to be tattooed upon your body (with your permission). I'm talking the Gen 1 LEAFs arse, the Mitsubishi iMiEV from any angle and maybe the i3's nose.

Great Video Review

"Electrics are a niche concern"... correct, today, but _rapidly_ becoming incorrect. SO many big names releasing electrics over the next 6-18m so it'd be great if you guys could start giving the electrics in the ranges much more focus. Most people I know looking to replace their car are waiting for genuine mass-market EV options. Otherwise thanks and keep doing awesome reviews!

Funfact: In Portugal the car is called "Kauai", because Kona is too similar to "cona", the slang word for the female genitalia in Portuguese...

Loving the mid-life crisis continuity errors, Mark, but that's nothing compared to Hyundai. This is not a sexy car, although it does have a dirty name in Portuguese. I think it looks overdesigned, cheap and chintzy - unlike the little i10 and i20 which are quite smart little things.

The more hurtful the better... I like to base my car purchasing decisions on whether or not my BIG bottle of evian will be within easy reach should I need it quickly, so, I'll be sticking to the carwow reviews...angry from Tunbridge Wells...

FWIW I have the electric one and it's genuinely awesome. I love driving it. It's officially my wife's car and I drive the Kona EV in preference to my X3 every chance I get. And personally, I like the look of it. It has actually grown on me.

Interesting review, somewhat opposed to most. The attitude seems generally negative from the start, which raises the question of personal views. Look at the Kona owners Facebook page and you’ll find some genuine views, both good and bad, from people who are living with the car. There’s still prejudice against Korean cars from the badge snobs, but Hyundai had the biggest sales growth of any manufacturer in 2018 and are becoming a feared rival to the Japanese/German crowd, who’ve had such bad publicity in recent years.
