Here's another Father Brown story set in Scotland at the somewhat lowering Castle of Glengyle, home to the dark and brooding Ogilvies. There's something a bit rum about the gardener but his spuds are top notch. The laird has gone walkabout and Father Brown gets very close to losing his head. We also get to meet a random inspector from Scotland Yard, voiced with the usual borderline negligence by yours truly.
It's been a quick trawl through the first collection of Father Brown - a few to go!
Where to next, my friends?
Read as usual by me, Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio 2023.

I’ve listened to several of these stories over the past few days and have really enjoyed them. Okay, sometimes I play them when I turn off the lights and go to sleep by them, so it takes me a few times to hear the whole tale. Today I had them on when I was out gardening. They remind me almost of Russian novelists’ short stories like Chekhov or Pushkin because sometimes the ending isn’t cut and dry resolved, like one would expect in a detective story. But he’s not a detective is he? He’s a smart, observant, worldly but unassuming pithy priest who solves mysteries.

A gloriously fanciful tale, l didn’t guess this one at all and l usually do in about five minutes. Ol,G.K. had a fine imagination.Quite a difficult read this one….l wouldn’t attempt it ,l,d giggle inappropriately , very well done.

Would never have chosen these stories but im really enjoying them. Thanks for introducing me to something new. I would love to hear you read the scarlet pimpernel books but i suppose they are abit long. H.G wells or Joules vern? 😊

Glad to hear your enjoying them. Me too! Good idea about the Scarlet Pimpernel books. I’ve done some H. G. Wells that is on audible and other platforms: War of the Worlds, Doctor Moreau, The Time Machine and First Men in the Moon. Jules Verne - I’ll look into that too. Thanks!

You're asking for suggestions? Thank you for asking!!! What about Dickens? Are you allowed to do Aussie detective Napoleon Bonaparte by Arthur Upfield? Perhaps that's thought offensively racist. Are Ngaio Marsh's books in the public domain yet? H G Wells? Just throwing out names to get the juices flowing.... 😁

I'm enjoying these Father Brown tales. You've got a knack for Chesterton's register - please keep going with these, warts and all. Oh, and if you take a swing at one of my favorite pieces of literature - The Man Who Was Thursday - based on your Father Brown work, I bet you'll ace it.

Argghhhhhhhhhh yayyyy!!!!!!!! I got onto youtube this morning not expecting a new Father Brown then promptly just lost my mind with glee when I see it at the top of my list !!! I normally wouldn't comment but this made my day better immediately so you caught me in the moment! I work from home for a big healthcare system and have a multitude of documentation-type-tasks where I have to focus and these stories do the trick!! Your stories have gotten me through the last month and a half of work since I found you! I literally re-listened to all your Sherlock Holmes stories at least twice each until I found your Father Browns! Please know you are helping to keep a healthcare system going (through my work)! LOL You have no idea who you are helping but you make a big impact!!!! Keep on truckin Greg!! What about doing other Victorian/Edwardian mystery stories of random authorship? Have a great rest of the week! Liz😀

Isn't "Scotch" a whiskey? I think things from or in Scotland are referred to as "Scottish". Am I wrong?
@TheNeilo-Audiosound
@TheNeilo-Audiosound Год назад
Your most definitely correct as even though I’m a Geordie I had a Scottish boss once years ago and remember a conversation where I said he was Scotch? Big Mistake apparently as his Reply was “Scotch is a Whiskey,I’m Scottish!! Seems even Geordies will never take their Freeeeeeedom😜
@davidwhite7294
@davidwhite7294 Год назад
No, Scottish or Scots folk get quite upset about it ( as would I ) as you say “Scotch” is Whisky, to say it for the people is a very old fashioned and patronising English habit.
@nbrandon6377
@nbrandon6377 Год назад
Yep, we Scottish people are 'Scots' or 'Scottish'. But back when Chesterton was writing, it was a normal misstep to call us 'Scotch'. Way more noticeable as an error nowadays, than it was 100 yrs ago.
@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio
Irish whiskey. Scotch whisky. !!!
@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio
I have some recollection that Arthur Conan Doyle, a Scot himself, used the word Scotch quite a few times. I may be wrong...
