I'll say that, despite my gripes, the new takes on the characters definitely feel more like actual teenagers. The more realistic body types aren't anything to complain about either, but some more diversity would be nice to see. I also hope the fashion improves as the series continues, as that's something I've found underwhelming.

As someone with autism and sensory issues, Twyla (to me) represents that sometimes you can't just articulate how your brain is working. Yes, "stealing" the speaker is bad, she's well aware it is, however it, to her, seemed like the easiest and therefore simplest way to shut it off to make the ghouls quiet, also her playing with the beads seems like a comfort item she's holding onto so she can calm and center herself, all in all I think Twyla is some of the best rep for autism I've seen in a show for a younger audience

I like that they made Twyla autistic in the new show. It fits with her new character while still feeling similar to the OG Twyla. Plus a WAY better depiction of someone being neurodivergent than Sia's Music movie.

As an autistic person, I love Twyla. I find her very relatable and she's become probably my favorite character now. Her sensory issues, her stims, and even the more subtle things, like her lack of eye contact, are all great to see in a character. Also they say she's autistic in the show, that's something that you don't see all the time (often it's just confirmed by the people working on the show, which I can appreciate but it's not quite the same) and it's very much appreciated

Frankie didn't get Clawdeen's mom POV in the flashback. They saw the POV of the doctor, whose brain piece was already established to be in Frankie's brain in the "Unfinished Brainess"

Cleo and Frankie are the ultimate slowburn. It took three generations for them to go from enemies to friends to lovers and I kinda respect it.

As far as I'm aware, the G3 cast of Monster High is made with the representation of each character in mind. They got a Wheelchair user to voice Finnegan and an Autistic VA for Twyla, and not only that but they also help with the writting of said characters giving a perspective from someone who's part of that comunity/minority

As someone who is non-binary, afab and who likes skirts and dresses (manly for sensory things). It’s really nice to see a non binary character who isn’t androgynous. I feel like everyone in shows passes. Which isn’t the case for every trans person. So seeing Frankie makes me feel a lot more seen.

As a lassie with autism, Twyla is some good representation, it’s so relatable is some ways (not everyone’s autism makes em act the same) but what is there is relatable, particularly quiet spaces. I can’t go a day without some lonely quiet time and sometimes I’ll do some crazy things to get it. Plus her stimming with her beaded bracelet is just a great little detail. Hope she gets more screen time and draculaura’s voice gets better. Ngl it kinda sucks now in my opinion, there’s no vampire-ness in it, but besides that I think we can expect things to go up

I'm really glad you brought up the lack of male-presenting couples in children's media. I LOVE cartoons, but as a gay man, I always feel a little left out when a male-presenting couple is pushed to the background. I would love to see more Lumity-esque relationships between male-presenting protagonists.

As someone diagnosed with autism, in think Twyla is very well done in the show! I might think this because she acts a lot like me and shows similar symptoms of I do but i still think she is done well. Twyla definetly doesn’t represent every autistic person out there, no one character can really. But I think the fact that they don’t try to make a character the embodiment of every autstic trait under the sun*cough*the main character from sia’s movie*cough* is neat and hopefully shows signs they know what they’re doing. I hope I worded this right (also I love Frankie and Cleo, their interactions are surprisingly very cute)

They tackled autism awareness so well. Im autistic and i saw so much of myself in twyla. Also her VA is autistic. The other monsters were very understanding to her as well

as an autistic person i really like how they treated twyla's autism so far :] i also really like the detail of her fidgeting with the beads on her bracelet (altho i might be biased since twyla is my favorite and ive always related to og twyla too jhgshjb) i also really like the details of her avoiding eye contact (cuz same), and her sensory issues, plus i really like how they outright STATE she is autistic, is not that she might be or that she is coded SHE IS autistic and that makes me soo happy

While I can't explain it as well with the other shows, from a marketing standpoint it makes more sense for monster high specifically to have two femme-presenting characters get together rather than two male characters since the show is mainly made to promote the dolls. And historically, "boy" or masc-presenting dolls sell a lot worse than femme ones. Although I def feel like we need more healthy mlm rep in kids media/cartoons (especially for lead characters!!! Not just one character happening to have two dads!!!)

grew up never knowing I was autistic until later in life. The show kind of helped illustrate for my mom how things are. It was helpful. I think some other ppl might disagree that its a little pander-y but isnt that what..all of this is?

Yeah I also get second hand embarrassment from characters singing, unless they're like idols or something, but whenever a character just sing in a normal day situation, even if they sing good, I just cringe for no reason

If anyone is wondering, I was really skeptical of watching the show for a while, because I always preferred the more adult side of monster high, and this show seems to be catering to the younger generation, but the show is actually so enjoyable, there are so many jokes that had me laughing out loud, the characters are really diverse in personality, its a fun watch

I'm delighted that this franchise has become like... not just a metaphor for diversity and acceptance of different types of people, but actually showing actual different types of people? Having a reoccurring character just SAY they're autistic is peachy to me. I don't think everything needs to be analogized for kids. It's great. And yeah, fully agree on a need for more male/masculine presenting queer relationships in cartoons. The only one I can think of is that one Steven Universe PSA??

I love the autism awareness with Twyla because it makes me, who is autistic and have been hiding it for all my life, feel represented.

I'm kinda glad that Frankie stayed fem even though they're canonically nonbinary because I noticed that with real people if you wanna pass as nonbinary the expectation is for them to be masc. As if "Man" is the neutral state of gender and femininity is just something extra. "Fem" doesn't equal "Flamboyant" and the male side of the spectrum is just as binary as the female, it's all just dependant on what you' feel like you wearing. If Franky FEELS like a nonbinary person in a skirt, THEN THEY'RE A NONBINARY PERSON. The fem part should be IRRELEVENT.

…I don’t know where to begin with this. First of all, you word things like you are blaming sapphic showrunners and the Clankie ship for a lack of MLM representation. It is not their fault. Regardless, ANY LGBT+ representation is rare and should be welcomed. You contradict yourself by saying Clankie still a good thing while complaining about it and, frankly, it sounds like you want to stir up some community in-fighting. Second, I am non-binary and feminine presenting, like Frankie. I would have LOVED seeing a character like them growing up. It would have helped me figure myself out way earlier, so that I wouldn’t spend my teenage years struggling with myself in silence. Hearing that Frankie is fem presenting purely as a marketing ploy kind of really stings. It’s also implying you believe non-binary has a certain look to it. My personal goal is not androgyny or masculinity. Overall, this really wasn’t the best introduction to your channel. I wanna give you the benefit of the doubt, because yeah, there should absolutely be more MLM representation in media. I agree with you on that and would welcome it. But I think you got fixated on some points that don’t matter for you argument, and said things that you really shouldn’t have.

Queer rep should never ever appeal the cishet audience let’s take that mindset away forever please, only way to see improvement and stuff is by continuing representing everywhere. The straight will get Draculaura and clawd soon plus Gil and Lagoona that’s their rep. And seeing how MH is breaking stereotypes it’s obvious they’ll add MxM. And there’s nothing wrong with Frankie being a non masc non binary person when there’s a lot who are fem presenting. 😊😊

As a person who has actively tried to seek an autism diagnosis, I really like the direction they took with Twyla, showing autistic traits that aren’t commonly represented in media especially through the lens of a female character, since for a really long time the most prominent autistic representation was cold hearted rude science obsessed autistic boys, or if we did get good autistic rep, the character was treated as a punching bag or actively made fun of in the show (cough entrapta cough Marcy wu)

I love this new show so much!! I love Frankie and Cleo maybe becoming a thing, the inclusive body types, and representation in gender, cultures, disabilities, and more! Although its supposed to be a kids show, I think it might be the best show I’ve ever seen. Theres so much representation that isn’t shoved in your face like its the characters only personality trait, and i love to see it on a show made for kids. And as an autistic person, I think Twyla is the best representation I’ve ever seen in any media ❤

i actually like the new monster high series a lot. It's character focused, but lightly story focused, i feel like most shows nowadays jump immediately into action tho push the plot along and dont flesh out the characters enough for us to know them well and relate. Theres some stuff i'd change for sure, i feel like the next episodes will be the big hit, since they seem to be more heavily story focused

Twyla is actually voiced by an autistic actress! It is definitely a step in the right direction (sincerely an autistic person) but I havent watched it yet so :(

I actually really loved Frankie being non-binary but still feminine presenting! I think it’s really wholesome and destroys the stereotype that non-binary people should only be and look androgynous

i feel like the reason why the representation in the new monster high cartoon works so well is because not only the characters are more diverse, but the team also is, there's several neurodivergent people who helped in the writing of twyla, and all the characters are voiced by people who actually fit the minorities they represent, meanwhile in g1 most of the cast for the english dub was of white americans forcing accents a good example of how important it is to have people from the said minorities is actually with g3 draculaura, she was originally not supposed to have a specific asian nationality, she was just gonna be a "general asian", but when her voice actress, who's taiwanese, explained for the ppl behind monster high how harmful that is since asia is full of so many different cultures, they changed it and made draculaura half taiwanese. the representation is SOLID, seeing frankie, a nonbinary female-presenting person dating cleo just made me feel so validated as a nonbinary lesbian

3:47 I just realized something. If Cleo's heart was taken out of her body before she was wrapped up and became a mummy, than maybe that is the very reason why she is an undead mummy. In Egyptian practices, when a body was being prepared for being wrapped up, all organs EXCEPT the heart are taken out. This is because, according to their religion, the heart of a person would be weighed against a feather as a final test of worthiness to go to the afterlife. However, if her heart was removed, then this step would be unable to occur, meaning that her soul could neither go to the afterlife or be destroyed. Thus, it might have been this that made her soul return to her now undead body as it had no other place to go. Feel free to correct me on this as I know in the original show Cleo never died because of her magical bandages, and that may be the case here. Other options exist too, I just wanted to throw this theory out there.

I feel you on that "character singing randomly" thing SO much, I already hated it as a kid because of the second-hand awkwardness LOL. Never really liked animated musicals for that reason etiher even if songs were good.

I will say, I like how it’s 11 to 12, or 22 minute episodes. And not short, webisodes. Yes, their main audiance is teens and more so kids. But there’s also a few adults that grew up with these toys, and may be interested in that storytelling potential. Just look at how successful Gravity Falls was, it had overarching narrative, and that just boosted sales on merch and viewership.

While I like the representation and the positive outlook of the show... can we talk for a moment about the fact that the writing and animation craft is extremely solid? The jokes usually land, the puns are the most delicious cringe and I can't help but love the references to creature features and horror movies.They can also do some great slapstick, since the majority of characters are some degree of immortal, so dismembering Frankie or Springfield Gorge-ing Cleo down a hill are just really viscerally funny to watch. It's also a good choice to give each of the 3 main characters a source of exposition (Frankie's brain parts, Clawdeen's instinct, Draculaura's codex), so we have variety in learning stuff. That and they got gold from me for all the references to the 99 Mummy movie they bundled Cleo with. Just solid

as an autistic person, twyla is amazing representation! she stims, she has a special interest, she struggles with social interactions, she doesn't like loud noises and she isn't a stereotype. i really like her in g3 :)

As an autistic person myself, I love what they have done with Twyla. Out of all the ghouls growing up I had to say Twyla was the one character I could related to the most. I was very shy which many girls on the spectrum are seen as, just like Twyla. I also like to keep to the shadows or not draw attention to myself. Loud noises bother me as well and I find myself needing to stim even with something small like jewelry. Honestly I won't mind either if they explore more on autism and how it affects Twyla. That people with autism shouldn't be treated like infants either. I also think this show could address how to properly help someone with autism through a meltdown using Twyla and use her as a way to explain to those who aren't aware that meltdowns aren't really a bad thing. Sia's movie music tried to do this but failed and even showed pining an autistic character to the ground during a meltdown which can be dangerous for both. I think Monster High has the chance to explore and teach people how they can help others in a healthy way that the person needs and by listening to them. Overall I'm super excited to finally get some representation and I hope I can grab her new doll when I get the chance. I'm also excited to see what kind of adventures can play out with Twyla being autistic.

Okay, as someone who just recently found out I am autistic (trying to get diagnosed!) Twyla is 100% my favorite character! I love her voice, her characters redesign, and everything about her! When I found out about her being autistic, I immediately bought her first doll. I personally think she's a character who I see myself in, and pretty good representation!

The reason the only protagonist queer characters are female presenting is because it's more palatable to cishet men and therefore the crusty old executives, because of the centuries old idea that women can't REALLY be in a relationship, and the modern idea that "lol woman on woman action is soo hot" and it's performative for men

If you're looking for a cartoon with a gay couple instead of a sapphic one, I absolutely recommend Dead End Paranormal Park. It's a great show and the two guys start showing interest in eachother very early on, and it's the focus of several episodes. Another show I can think of is Kipo, but it's very much a background aspect there. That aside, I'd love to see you talk about the show again in more detail. Only if you want to, obviously, but like you said, it tackles topics I haven't seen from other kids shows, which I think is really neat. There have been several points were I was thinking just how lovely it would have been to have this show when I was younger, and I'm glad others are getting the opportunity to grow up with it.

Honestly I also wonder why there's not more masculine x masculine relationships in cartoon. It reminds me off how in old teater Women X Women was seen as ok because it caters to the male audience and male x male was look down upon.

5:55 about lesbianism in cartoons. I got two theories about it. First - majority of cast r often girls, cause girlie toys r more marketable, that's why there's more opportunities to make wlw couple. Second, sad one, that lesbians r less terrifying for conservatives, misogyny and stuff.

I’m autistic and fem presenting nb and for me this is the best representation I’ve seen in a long time. Twyla has always felt very autistic coded to be so it’s great that they’re finally saying it. So many shows add hints that characters are autistic and some even say “the spectrum” (which is great) but barely any ever say autism. It’s such a breath of fresh air that it’s finally being said

I LOVE Cleo and Frankie as a couple since Cleo is my favorite character and I love that she forms part of my community now, but I also agree that there should be more "male/male-presenting" relationships on media, as a gay man I would have loved to see Deuce and Heath be a thing (maybe I'm biased because I have always had a huge crush on Deuce but still)

As someone on the autism spectrum I love how they handle Twyla, they don't make her dumb or overly happy and they way she twittles with her bracelet when nervous almost made me cry. I never really payed attention to Twyla in the og series but she is a top 5 now for sure!

so far it seems like they're handling the autism well with twyla, i've only seen people comment on her childlike voice but her voice actor also has autism and i don't personally think she sounds that childlike. I think just the fact that the character said they have autism was big enough deal as it is that most people are happy with it.

i decided to try it genuinely thinking id get bored but mannn some of the characters are the perfect lovable goofs that any cartoon watcher would enjoy, the fish girl and frankie are great., the only issue is lack of an animation budget some things look a bit weird, but i can tell theres many good artists behind this show and the did it justice, i do wish the vampire had the accent tho, i want cheesy accent

I’m autistic and I really like Twyla, she’s very similar to me. Also I saw some comments about people not liking that her voice sounds childish but I like it because I usually have a more mature voice but when I’m excited or meeting people for the first time or confused my voice regresses into a more childish tone

It would be so cool if they added an aro and ace character or maybe one whose aroace bc I feel like not many ppl know what aromantic is and while asexual is a bit more known it’s still not a lot. Plus for ppl who are aromantic or asexual or both (like me :D) we’ve never really seen much representation on tv just characters who r evil bc they can’t feel love

As an autistic artist with weird and mostly macabre interests and love of monsters, Twyla became my new favorite character thanks to G3's positive representation of a relatable character with autism, next to Rise of the Tmnt's Donatello 😊🌟

But a good idea would be to get a few different autistic characters, since Everyone's autism is different! You cant represent all autism in one character. From what I’ve heard from the autism community Twyla is great rep. I have ADHD, so while autism rep is absolutely not something I myself can comment on, from what I know from people online who are autistic and friends of mine who are, Twyla has a lot of good traits. I even see myself in her a bit with the way she plays with her bracelet to ground herself. All around a great character. Especially compared to some…Other “representation” out there. They even got someone who’s actually autistic and often depicts it in media to voice her. A problem I see a lot is characters who are meant to be further on the autism spectrum being depicted by neurotypical people. It’s finally something in children’s media that spreads positive and helpful information rather than harmful misinformation rooted in stereotypes and false info from hate groups like autism speaks. The show has generally good representation all around. I’ve only seen a few concerns, mostly surrounding Lagoona (which once again I can’t comment on).

If I had a nickel for every time I learned a Drag Queen played a character in an animated series, I’d have 2 nickels. I’m not going to continue with the joke because it’s been done to death. As for how Nickelodeon is handling Autism and ADHD, I’d say that they may be getting better? I know that Donatello in *Rise of the TMNT* is some GREAT Autism representation, and they don’t even have to say it outright!

Tho I do wanna note as someone who is autistic-I have mixed feelings on Twyla I like that they didn’t have the other ghouls just straight out treat her like a burden(unlike she-ra with entrapta) from what I seen she’s handled pretty well My issue comes more so from around her-such as how they took so much of ghoulia’s neorudivigernt traits fully knowing how many autistic people connected to her to the point she’s a completely different person Not to mention Mattel claiming they have no interest in partnering with the autistic community-making it obivious they only want the praise and money but not actually support the community their representing :/(which isn’t shocking that’s how coorpartions are like) So idk to me it’s hard for me to get all happy and excited over twyla knowing the shady things done behind the scenes

Honestly, any positive representation of mental health disorders is needed. Even if the representation itself isn’t perfect. There is surprisingly a lot of prejudice against mental health problems. I personally made the mistake of telling my friends in high school that I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I needed their support in my hour of need but they all decided to not be my friends anymore. My only crime being that I was severely depressed. We didn’t break off because of a fight, it was literally the moment they found out that my brain was different. Some of these friends even told me it was because their parents forbade them from hanging out with someone with bipolar disorder. Which is pretty messed up now that I look back on it. From my personal perspective, Monster high is handling mental health issues really well so far. I was impressed with how supportive Cleo was about Franky getting therapy if they needed to. Also with Twyla asking to be alone to handle a problem. Sometimes the best support loved ones can give to someone with mental health problems is space. I hope to see more representation in the future. It’s important to teach kids that having a different brain isn’t a bad thing. I wish this show had existed when I was a kid. Pardon the long rant, just wanted to give you my thoughts on the subject. Thank you for another wonderful video, and have a great day!

Also I, as an afab non binary person (and a trans guy, but that’s besides the point rn) that loves to use make up, skirts, dresses and having long hair, am quite delighted to see Frankie being fem presenting, cause it’s not often u see characters in media not being perfectly androgynous or masc presenting, so seeing them made me feel so so happy!
