Today, we take a look at the third game in the Broken Sword series, Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon. Unlike its predecessors, Broken Sword 3 is a 3D game rather than a 2D game. Was that change a good idea? Let's find out.

Absolutely love this game, despite it being a departure from the originals (which are of course superior!) I've always been intrigued by the weird coincidence that Tomb Raider AOD came out the same year and the two games seemed to borrow gameplay elements from each other. Broken Sword became more like Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider became more like Broken Sword. xD

Now that you mention it, that is pretty interesting. Maybe I should review Tomb Raider: AOD someday as.

That's so nice of you to say. Thank you so much. And yeah, I try to be as fair with my critiques as possible. Trust me, I don't find any joy in just bashing a game for no reason. I went into this one thinking I was gonna love it.

Really thorough review. I've got this game in my GOG library, even had a copy for the original Xbox. Could never bring myself to play beyond the first Parisian area, so this review was fan service. Looking forward to a BS4 review, another game I own but cannot bring myself to endure. Sadly the in-game walkthrough in BS5 proved too tempting, but at least I played that one through. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on that one too. I'll lookout for your other game reviews, had to stay up an hour later as was looking forward to this. Well worth it

I'm so glad you liked it. I was trying something new with this one, and was worried that it didn't work well. If all goes well, my review of BS4 will be on the 11th of April, and the BS5 review will be on the 11th of May. I will be uploading other reviews in between, but they will be of other games.

Nice review, quite in depth; the end baffled me too. Clearly there were portions of the game left on the editing floor. Also, I played this game back in the day, when it came out, so no amount of negative reviews were able to deter me not to play the 3rd part of one of my favorite games ever. Looking out for your reviews on BS 4 and 5. Cheers!

Having played 1 and 2 i bought this when it came out but i just couldn't get into it because it was just too different, it just didn't feel like Broken Sword. I never played the 4th one either for the same reasons. When i saw they had returned to the original art style for Broken Sword 5 i was super hyped and couldn't wait to play it. Playing 5 brought back so much nostalgia from the first two games it made me feel like a kid again experiencing the game for the first time, it was awesome.

I've not really played Sleeping Dragon much since completing it back when it came out. I remember enjoying it a lot, more so than I did the 2nd game (I think mostly because of how it connected to the first game), but I do think the 1st game stands as the best of the opening trilogy of these games. The ending I always found odd, but entertaining. I think Revolution just wanted to throw in some reference to St George & The Dragon, but didn't really know how to make it work so pretty much fumbled the ending. I also like to headcanon that the Broken Sword series takes place within the Assassin's Creed universe, just going on in the background.

When I look at this game in comparison to Broken Sword 4 and 5, I think it's closer to the essence of the series. Yes, the gameplay and how it resulted in a weird 3D game and the story are bad. However the aesthetics and George and Nico's character and dynamic (btw I love their casual outfits and how both have booty) are for the most part gorgeous. Yet I have to admit that the last time I played this game I deleted it and just had another great time with the first game. This game has a little soft spot for me because of nostalgia and because I really dislike 4 and 5. And Petra is slaying

(quite a documentary could say) I don't bother with spoilers, actually, I liked them because I was curious about the story and tried playing this game myself but dropped it quickly... couldn't bear with the gameplay style and watching a long-play is not that much immersive, specially with all those boxes dragging around xD so this review was perfect for it!

I played this game on the PS2 ...I was just happy there was another BS game to play . The stealth stuff I could get on board with , but the block puzzles ie shove left push up climb, push arrrggghhhh ... For me one of the best aspects of the the game was the interaction between the 2 main characters . The fairly flimsy guy the brave as nails girl and the will they , wont they get together . Call me an old fashioned romantic rooting for the odd couple , but that was what kept me playing . All that said , I really enjoyed this game until the ending .....Dragon ? Pah !
@SapphireBones

The writing was pretty solid, and I did really like both George and Nico in this game. And as you said, their interactions with each other were pretty great. Sadly, I just really didn't like the story, and the non-box puzzles were just not good enough to keep me interested.

Considering this was supposed to be the last game in the series, I get what they were going for with the ending. Sir George slaying a Dragon, just like St. George. Ties things back to Christianity and the Templars and all that. They just completely failed to set it up in any way.

I didn't mind the jump to 3D too much. The control system was atrocious in retrospect (and the ending really was bonkers), but I thought there was a comparable amount of care and attention put into the game (within the confines of its technology) as it had been the case with the originals. Now, with BS4... not so much.

It's quite funny to find your channel after binging BS 3-5 and thinking about playing all other Revolution games. Even funnier though is that I found third to be a more enjoyable experience than the second thanks to it's dialogs, not by much but still. Story and inventory hoarding do have problems indeed. I quite liked controls they tried (played with a gamepad, because it was clearly console oriented) as the game tried to keep up with times considering people were losing interest in point and click games and saying pixel hunting not being an enjoyable experience. Box puzzles are yikes that is true and they seem to be as inevitable in going to 3d from 2d as jigsaw puzzles are in 'remakes'. I didn't get why they made Lobineau brunette though. Good reviews anyway. And why do I always see Elon Musk on the cover?
@SapphireBones
@SapphireBones 4 года назад
Thank you so much. If you haven't yet, I suggest you check out my other Revolution Software reviews, especially In Cold Blood, since it was the first 3D game by them. And I get what you mean about the controls, since In Cold Blood had the same issue. The controls on PC were horrible, yet they were slightly better on PS1 (slightly), so it could be the case with this one as well. I'll check out the console version when I get the chance, however, I don't understand why they didn't include controller support. Same with In Cold Blood, the PC version can ONLY be played with a keyboard. Also, yes, the guy on the front cover really looks like Elon Musk. Now I feel bad for not making that joke in my video lol

Yeah, now I think about it this game felt like it was podged together from several ideas after multiple rewrites.
