During the Second World War, there were many horrendous war crimes that were carried out by all different armies involved in the conflict. Famously the Nazis carried out some horrendous acts, for example the Einsatzgruppen would follow the Wehrmacht and take the lives of civilians, and it is estimated that they killed around 2 million people. However the SS were responsible for much of the war crimes committed by the Germans, and there was one SS commander who met an incredibly brutal end at the hands of the French Resistance.
Helmuth Kampfe joined the SS and quickly rose throughout its ranks to become an incredibly powerful commander. He saw action on the Eastern Front and was drafted across to France as the Germans prepared for the imminent invasion of Normandy by the Allies. (D-Day) However he was tasked with defeating elements of the French Resistance known as the Maquis in the southern forests. However Kampfe was captured by them and was the highest ranking SS officer captured during World War 2. He was quickly executed by the French Resistance, however was killed in barbaric fashion as he was burned alive inside an ambulance with many other German soldiers.
Following Kampfe's execution, the Nazis and SS carried out a horrific massacre of a nearby village, Oradour-sur-Glane in which almost 700 people were killed in horrific fashion. This was for reprisals for Kampfe's death.

As far as I can remember, the officer in command of the battalion that destroyed the town and it’s inhabitants exceeded even the standards of cruelty in the SS. He was formally brought up in charges by the SS and was due to be courtmartialed…but managed to find death in the battles that Das Reich had with invading allied forces in Normandy. I do not believe that his body was ever recovered. His relationship with Kampfe had been very close, the two having fought and survived countless horrific battles against incredible odds on the eastern front together. Diekmann took Kampfe’s death very badly. The destruction of Orador sur Glane, while unacceptable to the SS in the western front, would have been easily overlooked in Russia, where the fighting between the Germans and the Russians was completely devoid of any mercy or humanity. Hence, having been a hard veteran of the experiences of the eastern front, Diekmann would have seen his solution to the death of his friend as, “acceptable” by the standards to which he had grown accustomed to. Allied soldiers in northern France left accounts of the surprising savagery of the close fighting that they experienced with German SS units that had cadres that had spent years fighting against Soviet forces in that theater of war. While I am not condoning Diekmann for his conduct, I wanted to draw attention to how the conditions of war alongside the kind of society that war and militant organizations breed can turn a human being into something less than what we have the capacity to be.

Human life itself is often devoid of mercy and compassion. If you want to survive, arm yourself and learn the ways of combat, ambushes, and dirty fighting. There is nothing wrong with putting out your right hand for a handshake but keeping a dagger or a pistol concealed in the left, ready for use at any sign of treachery or malice.

The cruelty of the SS in France is likely why the US would hand surrendering SS and some Wehrmacht troops over to the wonderful and hard fighting Soviets. Russia knew how to treat a German by keeping them as slave labor until 1955 to rebuild Russia

That's a very good point that will be lost on most unfamiliar with the savagery of the eastern front. Americans have never experienced such brutal savagery on the scale and capability experienced by the Russians and Germans.

These are the kind of things you won't learn about in history class. Here in the US, the school system is too busy re-writing history instead of teaching it. We must all learn from the atrocities of the past and keep the history alive and so that it is never forgotten and hopefully never repeated. Thank you for this very informative video.

You can learn form history class. Listen to what they are telling you, and then fully do more reseach yourself. Try to get as close as you can to the facts yourself. You may find some of these discoveries unpleasant, especially if the "good guys" have not acted well. The important thing you have learn from history class is that something did happen. Remember that there is a social bias in each country, and that the school system is caught up in this. When discussing your findings, always be diplomatic and understand that others may be bias and refuse to agree with you. That is OK, and no worth sacrificing respect or a friendship over a disagreement.

Please see my other posts.. This video presents as 'fact' a version of events that was to be offered as Diekmann's defence at his court martial. There IS still some mystery about exactly where and when Kampfe was killed but it emphaically wasn't in front of a baying crowd of villagers as his body was burnt. This video has some useful and accurate info in it, but unfortunately the entire premise is, frankly, nonsense. A much more accurate and informative account could be found if you searched "In a Ruined State: Chapter 7: An Explanation for the Massacre" I wish the author would take it down or at least explain ths version is NOT corroborated by any witness testimony or any other evidence (from either the German or French present that horrible day ).

You may have found it to be 'another excellent video'...however, the entire premise (and title) is almost certainly simply untrue. There's no evidence whatsoever to confirm the idea that Kampfe was murdered and burnt in public. It seems this version of the story was to be used as the defence case at Diekmann's court martial. There's no corroboration from either the SS soldiers present or any French sources that I'm aware of. Perhaps one interpretation would be that Diekmann had been told that his friend had been executed ( by Milice) or other informers...we'll probably never know, but ( I think) it's virtually certain that Kampfe was executed in woodland near Breuilaufa, quite likely, as a resistance reprisal to the massacre of Oradour! Accuracy matters.

This village appears in the very first episode of "The World at War" I didn't realise it was a reprisal for the death of this character. I thought it was Nazis frustration and revenge for the Normandy Landings. Thank you. 👍

This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France. The day the soldiers came, the people were gathered together. The men were taken to garages and barns, the women and children were led down this road, and they were driven into this church. Here, they heard the firing as their men were shot. Yes it was an interesting piece of information BUT I somehow get the vibe from some of the comments that this would justify the massacre. It certainly doesn't. Communists who have infiltrated the Resistance murder an SS- general _near_ Oradour-sur-Glane, and in reprisal the SS massacre everyone living in the whole village, including children. Not any more justified than before, because they punished the wrong people and out of proportion.

This is the first time I have heard of this account.As I know it the reprisal against this village was due to the constant attacks by the French resistance against the SS panzer division Das Reich.It was held up for two weeks in total as it moved up through France to take part in the fighting after D Day.

Das Reich was NOT held up for two weeks by partisans, total rubbish. On June 8 they departed Montauban to the area Tulle Brive Limoges to put down a partisan uprising. This they did by 11 June. 12 June they did vehicle maintenance and departed for Normandy on June 13

Das Reich was delayed in getting to the invasion beaches in Normandy. If they chose to do repairs so much the better. They were too late to push the allies out of France. The only military event Das Reich is remembered for is mass murder of defenceless civilians. They had little effect on the allied invasion. They were destroyed by naval gunfire of which they had no defence. Fighter bombers finished the rest off

The Germans were no fools (along with their collaborating French...IN THE SOUTH..The Malice) as to WHO they were dealing with..but the move upto Normandy WAS frustrated...BY..MARQUIS... The French Resistance knew that there would be reprisals, but the sacking and burning of the village and the murder of the innocents was not considered.

To be brutally honest...the Resistance DID know something would happen...it was great for THEIR propaganda...as stated before..they knew what the Germans were like...Das Reich was actually in negotiations with Resistance leaders about a prisoner swap/release..but as stated these Marquis were communist. Also please do not forget..many of these Resistance groups had different motives and often fought against each other..as they did in other occupied territories such as Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia. Please read for reference Max Hastings book DAS REICH as it is a very involving and sad read and shows not all is as crystal clear as history is often portrayed

Agreed - although it's worth adding that the Tulle atrocity was apparently fuelled by the Germans discovering 40 of their own men who'd surrendered being found massacred and mutilated by resistants the previous day (with their testicles cut off and stuffed in their mouthes). A horrific tit-for-tat ensued between the Germans and the resistants, and tragically it was the innocent French civillians in Tulle, Oradour-sur-Glane and innumerable other villages and towns in France who payed the price. For the addition to the record also: Kampfe was probably not held in or about Oradour-sur-Glanes (the site of the terrible massacre of nearly 700 French people) as stated here, but in or near the village of Oradour-sur-Vayres which was some distance away. So the SS didn't even get the 'right' (not the right word I know) village to take vengeance upon. On such twists of fate do such horrors happen.

The Maquis was never announced a fighting Force at the Red Cross at Geneva (like i.e. the "Volkssturm" was). So they were treated like "armed Civilists". That means in an occupied (and surrendered Territory since 1940): Kill at sight. All according to Hague Convention.

Partisan wars are always brutal. Whether ww2 or Vietnam or Afghanistan or even the American west. The usual horrific standards of “normal” combat are often suspended as both sides feel no need to show any mercy.

It was civilians vs the invading German army, there was no standards of “normal” especially from the notorious SS. IF any lessons are to be learned from history is, don’t serve fascist, racist leaderships and participate in their invasions and never ending wars. Dictators, demagogues need the people to fight and die for them. Right now am looking at the United States and it’s oil, gas and weapons billionaires that push for never ending wars.

@@AdmiralBison It was ARMED civillians(partisans) vs the german army, the geneva convention rules of engagement does not applies to ARMED civillians so it is only natural that common war standards wont be abided by both sides in a guerilla war. But the germans razed a civillian town only for reprisals is certainly a war crimes indeed. The germans didnt found any partisans so they make "examples" by mass murder a village. The partisans knows that they wont be the one suffering but the innocent civillians will, yet they keep on going. Yeah C'est la guerre, every sides has their own monsters.

This is not all black and white...as stated before impartially the SS were by no means saints and part of a regime that cost the innocent deaths of millions. However please look at what you have said/stated...”they should all have been executed that way” You have grown up in a Federal State that since the war opposes the death penalty. I heard about the French village the WSS burned down (and murdered everyone alive in it). But never about the officer the maquis executed. As all murdered German soldiers were revenged as part of the nazi scare tactics, the destruction of the village makes much more sense now. It was an overkill, but definitely in line with practices already in place. Good video.

But, essentially, this narrator has presented as 'fact' a highly contested and , in my opnion, outright false narrative. There's NO evidence to suggest that Kampfe was executed and burned in front of a baying crowd! This would have been unprecedented behaviour from the resistance who would have been painfully aware of the reprisals that were routinely exacted by the nazis, all over France, in that period. No witnesses on either side ever testified to support this version of events. A version that was to be presented as Diekmann's defence at the court martial he was due to face. The resisitance said that Kampfe was executed ,in a forest, in response to the atrocities at Oradour sur Glane. The internet is a fantastic resource but this video is dangerously misinforming (for whatever motivation / reason)..

However Kampfe (almost certainly) wasn't executed until AFTER the massacre and CERTAINLY WASN'T burned alive in front of crowd of baying villagers.. and his body was never found by German forces. That is factually incorrect. My facts (as far its possible to tell from the evidence) are straight.. your comprehension probably isn't. The title, the whole premise of this video is utter bollox. Yet pompously presented as fact by an amateur historian.

"Heer" referred to the German army. "Wehrmacht" referred to the German armed forces in total, the Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and the Heer (but not the Waffen SS).

If you're referring to the photo at around 3:28 then yes, that is most definitely Kämpfe. Left to right are Kämpfe, SS-Sturmbannführer Ernst Krag, SS-Obersturmbannführer Albert Stückler and commander of the 'Das Reich' division SS-Gruppenführer Heinz Lammerding.

When I watch such documentaries that mispronounce basic French or German spellings; ex. Luftwaffe pronouncing German W as if it were English W or French QU as KW ex. Question - Kwestʃn instead of Kestjõ ; I think a little less of the documentary as the creators have not done their homework. I do not "subscribe" to such work.

many Nazi/German reprisals were a resualt of some horrible actions commited against them.the allies working with the underground had teams with S/W radios who arranged staged road blocks thus stalling German columes and called in airstrikes on the Germans causing casulites and loss of many vehicles,with noway of striking back ecept for FLAK the troops got extremly angered by such actions ,so it's nowonder how such repricles could happen horrible as they were .

I've been to this village. They built a memorial underground so as not to disturb the remaining village. It was sad to look at the list of names and see infants listed. My book only says the men were shot, not burned. I'll have to double check.

Lammerding, prior to commanding 2SS Das Reich division was the Executive Officer for 3SS Totenkopf Division.....he not only approved of the Massacre,he encouraged his men to brutality. Oddly enough, the unit involved in the massacre was actually from the Alsace Lorraine....a German speaking region of France. After the war ended, the French government attempted to see Justice done but most of the sentences given to the soldiers involved with mere slaps on the wrist...

They conducted war according to their rules, policies, traditions. The SS can be called degenerates because germany claimed to be superior to Asiatic barbarians such as Attila and it violated the Geneva Conventions although these seem to have been more in evidence after the war at the war crimes trials than during the war in the actions of Axis and Allied forces. Ever considered why there were so few Japanese POWs taken by USA troops? Some high ranking USA officers claimed the policy was to kill prisoners because they had no means to safely imprison them while taking various islands in Pacific theater. SS were notorious for their treatment of captured military and partisans especially on Eastern Front but also in Western Europe, ie Battle of the Bulge, Malmedy. BTW why do you differentiate "combat troops" from SS? They were for the most part combat troops. Granted they were a part of the NASDAP rather than the German Army proper .

In the light of day on June 9, Das Reich took stock of the situation in Tulle. Forty men of III./95 were discovered dead near a school. They showed signs of execution, and local civilians reported the men had been killed after dropping their weapons and surrendering. Only an SD officer with them had a pistol in his hand. Most of the bodies were mutilated, some had had their genitals cut off and stuffed into their mouths. Others had been covered with excrement. One man had holes in his heels with a rope through them, and a ruined face, indicating that he had been tied to the back of a truck and driven around. Other bodies were found around town, bringing the total German dead to 64. The III./95 had reported 80 missing, meaning several were unaccounted for. And 9 more Germans died in rescuing the garrison, as mentioned before.

What would you do if your country was taken over in a similar situation by an Evil of this magnitude? What would you do if you knew for a certainty that certain groups of your fellow countrymen & women were destined for extermination and, that the rest of the population would be used as slave labor? What would you permit knowing that you had no rights any longer? Best to think about what happened to the area of Germany that fell to the Red Army - the consequences of killing, murdering, exterminating 26 million Russians were repaid in kind. The SS had acquired a reputation long before the outbreak of war for savagery and brutality - what they did subsequently made their prewar conduct look like the Vienna Boys Choir.

@@fawltyoldboybasil.2178 not sure if your message is anyway related to what I posted. When the partisans captured the ss officer the allies had landed in Europe so the end of the reich was in sight. All they had to do was keep him prisoner until the end of the war then execute him but instead they burnt him alive which resulted in the retaliation and murder of children and women.

The Maquis was responsible for giving the allies intelligence and sabotaging german communications that helped the allies greatly during D-DAY. So take your historical revisionism somewhere else please the communication blackout caused significant delay for the germans during d-day.

You say that like the Nazis wouldnt have killed people if they met no resistance. The group that were running kill squads against civilians on the Eastern front as a SOP and were also using concentration camps to kill 11 million people mostly Jews, but also people they didnt like like people on the left, people with downs, gay people etc etc. The NAZIS killed thousands of innocent people, not the French resistance.

Shocking. I had read about the razing of Oradour-Sur-Glane 30 or forty years ago and knew that the commander of the SS troops ordered a reprisal for the kidnapping of a German officer. As I recall the fate of the officer was not revealed even though NOW I believe the writer of the book knew exactly what happened.. As a large part of the book covered the trial the author had to know what the officer commanding the detachment, Adolf Diekmann, testified to at his trial about recovering the burned body. I don't think that is a lie. Many of the unit's soldiers were tried after the war but amazingly enough the French were stymied by the fact that a large number of the soldiers were Alsatians and nominally French. Alsace changed hands many times and it was not politically expedient to try, convict, and execute French citizens. Even after all this time I distinctly remember the name of one of the Alsatian Sergeants, 'Hascha Kurtz' as the name seemed very unusual to me. I'm not at all surprised by the behavior of the Communist Maquisards. They were unusually bloodthirsty and this wasn't the first reprisal that they provoked. I don't know what they were trying to achieve but they were likely trying to kill two birds with one stone inflicting casualties to the Germans and destabilizing and terrorizing the country sufficiently to enable a Communist takeover.

You are correct i read an account of this back in 1973 , the subject of the burned handcuffed ss corpses in the ambulance being raised as the rationale for Oradur , BUT was presented not as a confirmed fact but as an unconfirmed story. I suspect that the truth was seen to detract from the public image of the Marquis, and the communists during the war. The West STILL has not come to grips with the fact that Stalin helped to put Hitler into power and assisted him to train his army in the Soviet Union, as Stalin intended to use him to start a rerun of WW1, and when Germany and the British and French were economically and militarily exhausted , to invade Europe successfully in a rerun of their failed attempt to do so in 1919. Stalin knew exactly what Hitlers plan for the East was, but he expected a long drawn out war in the West, Stalins plan failed when Germany won a quick victory over the French and British, which left Hitler free to attack the Soviets something that Stalins risky strategy had not anticipated.

I'm surprised the villagers hung around after the execution. They must have known how the Nazis reacted to any officer being killed; in 1942, the entire Czech village of Lidice was razed and the citizens executed and/or gassed at concentration camps after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. It was no secret. And since the Allies were on their way, the SS might have had more important things on their minds than rounding up villagers for revenge. Does anyone know why the village didn't run and hide?

This type of situation is all too common in counterinsurgency situations and is conterproductive. Ultimately, reprisals only lead to more recruits for the insurgents.

@@davidcole2685 if I recall correctly the brits succeeded because the insurgents were a different ethnic group (Chinese, around 3% of the population) than the majority of Ethnic Malays. Even though the Malays wanted independence from Britain, the chaos and instability of the war gradually turned them against the insurgents. It wasn’t so much the Brits winning, as it was the Insurgents screwing it up and alienating their support base.

@Philip Carpenter the “men” that murdered this SS man..along with several other German soldiers were prisoners of war..simples..look and read up the facts. You yourself would even agree that law needs to be shown in order that you show yourself to be the greater good! Even for an SS soldier. These “men” soon shot off into the hills and left the town of Oradour to its fate...one did not see them coming back to fight the SS Battalion (even in the morning as they shot 2 unarmed men in a nearby area...so the warning(s) were already out weren’t they?) BEFORE the SS Bn moved into Oradour. Please read history properly with in depth literature THEN formulate a mature opinion open for discussion/debate If you feel incapable of this..I suggest you go home and spend the money you would otherwise have spent on educating yourself and insulate your roof.

Just some pronunciation notes. The correct pronunciation of Maquis, is Mack-kee, not Mack-kwee. Also, what is known as the "TH" fronting in pronunciation is very very apparent. . It is nineteen thirty three, not nineteen firty free as you say.
