As a chronic runwaway teen in the 80's in Northern California this is terrifying. I did have some really scary close calls during that time. It's amazing how stupid and naive we were in those days. I look back now knowing all these things and am amazed I never ended up missing in a ditch. I feel for those poor girls.

Don't say never. One time I offered a homeless man a ride and he gave me $40 gift cards to outback. 2 $20 gift cards. Did I murder him? No.

I can see how he managed to trick so many people into convincing them that he was “safe” when they were hitchhiking. He didn’t seem like a bad person AT ALL during his interview. He seemed intelligent, like he was just there to give insight into how serial killers think instead of talking about himself as a killer. His mom screwed him up, he deserves to be in prison, but his mom definitely helped him get there

His need was satisfied after he killed his mother. This was the climax and he was emotionally spent after that. She was the source of his emotions and psychosis. I think, had he killed her first, he may not have killed anyone else.

I saw a lot of interviews about him, very smart, but I believe he had an emotional breakdown because of his mother, this guy was sick, I agree but I believe if his mother had treated differently, he would have turned out better. I'm not looking for an excuse for him, I know what he was and what he did. That is why education, love and respect are important.he grew up with a hatred of women and a very, very big lack of love that clearly affected him.

About 30 years ago, I picked up a hitchhiker and dropped him off at a local gas station. About 20 min later the Police came knocking. The guy had robbed the gas station and stole a car. Never picked up another one since.

I live across from his apartment where he buried his moms head. My parents have owned the house before Edmund kemper and his mom moved across the street! My parents would celebrate holidays with him. He use to baby sit my aunts best friend who lives a few houses down from me. It always gives me chills when documentaries about him pop up on my RU-vid!

Mindhunter was seriously eye opening for me. It got me turned onto the whole true crime genre. I CANNOT believe they cancelled it!

What makes this case so alarming,is that he is intellectual and speaks well..but he went the wrong way.

He literally lives a half a block from me in Vacaville. I drive past the front gate of CMF prison on my way home from work. Now it's called California Medical Facility now, but when I was a kid it was the California Mental Facility. It had the demented criminals that did messed up stuff. Charles Manson was there for a little while too. We hear a siren everyday at 5pm. One siren means all prisoners accounted for, 3 sirens means "lock your doors someone's missing and they're about to shut our neighborhood down to search our houses"

Anybody else think it's weird that we're told all the details and intricacies of crimes like these, but they still won't talk in detail as it pertains to the Las Vegas shooting that killed 58 people?

He was not shortlisted for a job in the police academy for his height and weight??? So apparently you can get into the academy if you have killed your grandparents and spent time in the psych unit... SMH. What a complete monster. I wonder what happened to his sisters. No doubt they too must be scarred in some way because of the bad childhood.

I don’t care how well spoken, charming, or out going this guy is. Let alone how open he is. He is a horrible person. A sick nasty person who I hope rots in hell. He approached little girls more so women he knew he can dominate. Nothing but a coward to me. Too many people got along with this guy. How the hell are the cops sharing cigarettes after knowing he freaking ate someone body with those lips. I don’t care how charming you are. He’s a monster. I don’t find him friendly or charming even in the interviews. Maybe because I’ve worked with psych patients for years but his eyes don’t match his words. His eyes are looking through you not at you. Meaning while you’re talking he’s figuring out what you know and what he wants from you. While he’s an open book about his crimes I’m sure he’s telling you what he wants you to hear Not necessarily what you are asking. He seems very much he knows he’s smarter than you and is going to play with you until he’s bored. You’re just there for his amusement.

Correction: You first describe him as a full grown man before he was sent to his grandparents home. He was NOT A FULL GROWN MAN when he killed his Grandparents at 14 and went to a psych ward for 5 years and got out on good behavior - because he lied to everyone. He was not supposed to be sent back to live with his mother but they allowed him to.

His interview is actually crazy he seems so normal, he talks how he picked up the girls and it reminded him of the first ones he killed and he realized it was wrong dropped them off and went to kill his mom.

He called his mother's friend over because he knew his family would wonder where his mother was, and why she didn't show up for their Easter lunch and get together, so he figured if her best friend was missing also, that he could say they went on a trip together.

Ed was not 6'4"....he was 6'9".... His father, btw, later admitted his new wife and son had no issues with Ed, that Ed did not have a whole bunch of issues and enjoyed spending time with his stepmother. The issue was Ed's mother. She harped at her son and ex husband, would call his stepmother and younger son multiple times a day, spoke "ill" to them, threatened them, called neighbors and even called his new school. So his dad gave up without even trying to fight for his son in any way possible. His dad and his sisters also testified that Ed told them he wanted to begin seeing his school counselor before he went to his dads. He knew, even as a young man, that something was wrong but his mothers response was ONLY corporal punishment and church. Only a bit after he moved back to his mother's from his dad's is when he began showing true symptoms of mental illness. He said later that his 1st stay in a mental health facility that no one told him what his IQ scores were. They just started spending more time with him. The staff and his charts also reflect this. He realized later on that the attention and conversations was something he craved. He learned to say what they wanted. This was the 1st time he was given constructive criticism and wanted to contribute to society. He has said multiple times since his trial that he does not need to leave the facility. Tells anyone who asks him about parole, not to ever let him leave. He should never be free. That he can't control his mind and doesn't want to test it either. Crazy

Killed his grandparents because he wanted to see what it felt like? Wth?! He should have NEVER been released after that! For him to be released to then to this to do many others is sickening!

So basically we have a long family history of abuse leading to a serial killer.

What’s sick is his dad divorced his mom due to mental abuse and said suicide missions in war were less traumatic then his ex wife BUT HE LEFT HIS KIDS WITH HER and moved to another state .... WTF!!?!

When I was young traveling around Australia I would always get picked up by Christians true as it was like I had a guardian angel with me from Sydney to DUBBO BOURKE to Brisbane so thanks to my angel's I am wiser and older now thanks from Australia 👍

I genuinely believe that if he had gotten the help he needed and if he had been raised in a better family environment, there might have been a chance that he would have lived up to his good potential but this is just my speculation.

As sad and upsetting as it is, I feel alot of this was avoidable. Rip to the victims.

That's so interesting how close of a relationship he had with police, to the point that they seemed to want to believe that he didn't commit any crimes and to let him have special treatment. That's what happens when you're friends with police. Just have to be a murderer to qualify.

ive watched a bit of true crime stuff but this one really really disturbed me on a new level. i just cant process that people exist who do things like that

Psychopathy is terrifyingly amazing.. he’s just completely emotionally detached from his crimes. It’s just something that I can’t imagine.. are such a huge part of “normal” life. It must be difficult for a sociopath/psychopath to know that they are lacking what everyone else has and enjoys. This guy said it himself that he just did not understand socialization. I think this honesty comes from two places. 1. Narcissism: there’s a certain pride that he seems to have in who he is. I mean, he even called the police himself.. and the manner he did it was prideful. And 2. Education: I think the dude knows he’s locked up for life and has nothing to lose by being completely honest about his crimes and the sick desires of his mind. I think he wants to educate us on psychopathy.

I just can't imagine how the victims felt in those moments... It's scary just to listen to it ...

I think a lot of people would like Ed if they had a chance to talk with him. He made himself relateable despite his sick tendancies, and he knew deep down of what was wrong. Thats the most bizarre thing about human nature, isn't it?

I live in Santa Cruz. I worked with a couple older women who were late teens at this time and told me about this. Apparently there were a couple serial killers in this small mellow beach town around this time
