In the show he's American but has his racial roots in Brazil and when he became Blanka he wanted to stay in Brazil because he wasn't treated like a freak and he still got beautiful women.
This view only makes sense to me if you're someone who played Street Fighter II but never saw his ending, came back to the series years later and realized he was never meant to be some kinda untamed animal or threat. His debut game, Street Fighter II, shows this in the ending. That's kinda the point of his story in the game. He looks like a mean monster, then you beat his arcade mode and you realize he's just a goofy sweet guy who cares about his mom. It's fine if you're not a fan of that, but this was always what the character was from his debut onwards. The ''terrifying aura'' was only meant to show that, while he looked scary, he really was a nice guy.
Exactly, i would understand his disappointment if they would have turned him into a goofy good boy in the latest games, but he was always intended like that, as you stated, he might look like a monster, but he is actually a good boy.
Dude is like a lovable Frankenstein instead of a monster ending just because I call him a beast doesn't mean he doesn't care or have love in his heart it just means he is more animalistic than human
I would agree with you except my SF game is whatever game The Mika is in. I know she debuted in 3A but SFV has the best version of “The Mika”! SFV 4LYF
Fr the moment I first saw Blanka, way back in 1991, always thought of him as the videogame version of that creature, from Big Trouble in Little China, that was stalking Jack Burton.
I specifically remember that the american instruction manual for SF2 said that Blanka learned his electrical attack from electric eels. And in the context it didn't seem like they were saying he watched the eels and figured out how they did it. No it seemed to be saying that he could talk to electric eels and befriended them so they "taught" him how to make electricity with his body. Like that's some sort of Ki skill rather than a biological adaptation. Yes I was laughing my butt off at that and that is why I remember it. Also for the record. Blanka was then and still is my favorite character because he's not just another generic martial artists type character. He was interesting.
@@mastershakezu1a It specifically says in SF6 that he just stepped on an eel one day and just "got" the power of electricity from it. No idea where the idea that he ate eels came from. Though eels are delicious. Well, I dunno about electric eels
Carlos Blanka is the first of many, who will march out of Bison’s laboratory, and sweep away EVERY ADVERSARY, EVERY CREED, EVERY NATION, until the very PLANET is in the loving GRIP of the Pax Bisonica. And then peace shall reign in the world, and all humanity shall bow to him in humble gratitude.
i remember that there are fighting stage on marvel vs street fighter where you can see blanka sitting but when you choose shadow character which is charlie/nash obviously the sitting blanka will disappear.sorry for my bad english.
I'm 43 and have been and still play street fighter 2, I can't imagine how much time I've put into that and the hours standing arcades, one of my favorite games of all time. Great vid!
I clearly remember the very first time I played Street Fighter 2, it was at a friends birthday party at Chuck E Cheese. I remember seeing this weird looking green monster with red hair on the character select screen. My 11 year old self couldn't help but pick him to play as. It was really cool when I saw my opponent get electrocuted for the first time. Blanka always been a fun character to play as.
When my dad decided he would conveniently be religious again, this was the first, among many, video game cartridges he'd eventually soak in a bucket of water to "rid our house of demons" bcus Blanka resembled a demon. Legit. Fun fact, one of my sisters is named "Blanca", so........yeeeeeaaaaahhhhh.
I SWEAR I remember something about him learning his electricity from electric eels. I dont know from where or why, but I remember seeing it in some game or something and it stuck with me because of how absolutely strange it was.
Fun fact! Blanka name in Spanish and Portuguese means white when spelt "blanca" But according to some the Creator didn't know and it was actually a funny coincidence
@@TelmoAmaro Yes, I am aware a cognant Word because Spanish and Portuguese are similar. My grandparents are from Galicia where their Spanish sounds like Portuguese. But thank you for the correction. I just find it to be a funny coincidence how he's named white but not green
For many of us the SFII coin-op was the first time we saw a one-on-one fighting game when almost everything esle was a side scrolling beat'em up. Blanka was the coolest looking when everyone was a character we've never seen before! The internet was relatively unknown and video game mags had not published game guides for SFII yet for most of us back then. Therefore, Blanka had the only special move we could pull off. His was the first special we learnt to execute followed my Chun-Li and Honda in that order.
While i hate his design in SF6, I actually love the reason for him being green. It's so practical and straightforward, and speaks to what he had to do to survive as a feral human in the Amazon following his plane crash. It's so brutal yet without being grotesque or brutish. It also speaks to the character's ingenuity. The question now is why does a normal formerly-feral human have power over electricity? As a side note, i never saw him as a monster. He was a feral human like Tarzan, just from Brazil, and for some reason green and with the capabilities of an electric eel (presumably because both live in the Amazon?). Seeing him as a monster is kind of a weird take, but whatever. The fact that a world famous fighter turns into a huckster for dolls of himself is shockingly on-script, including examples of such as George Foreman (electric grills), Evander Holyfield (edible ears), and Mike Tyson (edible ears). My only question here is why isn't his venture an instant success, given that all of the Street Fighter characters are globally known in one way or another due to their tournament participation.
Omitted from this: The Street Fighter Animated series continued the movie's idea of Charlie being Blanka well into the time of the Alpha Series, and at one point had Blanka temporarily revert into his human form, and it was just Charlie with black hair and a green vest. Funnily enough in a different scene featuring a montage of Alpha characters fighting in a tournament, this version of Charlie would also appear with no explanation why he wasn't being Blanka at the time. I guess they just forgot or didn't care.
there are fighting stage on marvel vs street fighter where you can see blanka sitting but when you choose shadow character which is charlie/nash obviously the sitting blanka will disappear.sorry for my bad english.
I'm not convince at all by your analyse. I'm usually OK, but not here. Since SF2, and the touching reunion with his mother how can you concider him like à monster ? I find his evolution pretty coherent and I'm OK with it.
Yes, when Street Fighter Alpha Series came out, I was confused why it has Blanka and Nash as separate characters... The Street Fighter in the US really messed up the lore of the game that makes it so confusing many times.
He has been my main since the start, back in 91/92 when I was still at school. My main disinterest with SF3 was because he didn't feature. My stance is, he is his best version ever in SF6, but he looks the best in SF5 - I like the beast in him rather than the ape.
I'm not sure why people would be upset over the character development that you've presented here. I think it's cute and sentimental and fits with the character's original ending. Also holy crap I love Blanka-Chan and want one.
My conspiracy theory on the Blanka and mom story was all the stories were apart of Guile’s nightmare in his ending he disclosed to his wife he just woke up from a long nightmare.
For me it was Guile’s flash kick. I remember it still. Xmas day 1992 at my cousins house. It was the most amazing graphics I’d ever seen. Was a long 2 months til my birthday in February until I could get my own SNES.
Jimmy, a typical Brazilian name.... as a Brazilian myself, I can confirm that our diet makes us green and our hair red... but not everyone has fangs, unfortunately. kids without fangs end up being bullied, it's sad.
Blanka is awesome. I'm glad to hear they love Blanka (which is "white" in Portuguese??? IDK why he is green) in Brazil. He was my favorite as a kid, and I always liked his unusual style, thought it was extremely hard to get a handle on. I never really got good at Street Fighter, but I seeing Blanka included always makes me smile. Edit: Oh hey, Mista Top Hat answered the question. It's the best explanation I have ever heard.
I always liked that he got a heartwarming ending in the original game and showed a softer side; sort of like the Hulk or Frankenstein's monster he was a gentle giant at heart rather than a savage demon. But the more recent SF games have clearly pushed the goofier side of the character way too far. I think that like with the Hulk, Blanka's softer side can be shown without diminishing his nature as a badass fighter, he should be portrayed as heroic and noble at heart, in contrast to his monstrous appearance, as opposed to being silly and goofy.
First saw Street Fighter 2 out the front of the corner store at my grandparents. My brother and I played it. I picked Blanka, he picked E Honda. I won then it went to single player campaign and Chun li flogged me haha. Good times.
You underestimate gamers in the 90s. When SF2 released on the SNES, everyone I knew beat it on difficultly 5+ with every character to see the full endings for each. That’s what you did back then: complete games 100%.
This video title gives off the impression that it's a video essay about Blanka, a RU-vidr, who's just been caught doing something he shouldn't have. I stopped short of searching for his heartfelt apology video.
Nope. Not at all. Red hulk was not a thing back then. There's nothing red hulk about him. Red hair like a wild man is not anything similar to Red hulk even if red hulk was around back then. But it wasn't . Curupira is Blankas true origin despite all modern theory and lost knowledge. The hidden truth is he is a Brazilian folklore character. If anything marvel related at all he would be the mix of Beast, Hulk, And electro. But not red hulk
I never felt that Blanka became side lined as comic relief but the character was always misunderstood and a kind person who was sterotyped as a savage. Kind of like Tarzan...... via The Hulk!
I always felt Blanka should have a King Kong / Hulk vibe. Very dangerous and animalistic, but if you don't attack him you find he's quite gentle and almost childlike underneath his incredible strength. But man....Capcom has really removed his cajones over the years. Less sometimes truly is more.
Blanka is a hybrid of two old Brazillian Myths. Two Cryptids combined. The Curupira and The Mapinguaris. Both of these legends are types of Brazillian Forest Guardians. Blanka represents these mythologies well. These are old South American and Brazillian Cryptids of their folklore. The inspiration is clear and it is no coincidence he is form Brazil. There is obvious inspiration from King Kong, and Tales of American Yeti / Sasquatch in there as well. But the main inspiration is the creature of myths of Brazil.
It's weird to think the creator of the character was worried it might be offensive to us Brazilians. I have never met a single person who didn't hype our boy Blanka. He's a light hearted character, pretty goofy at times, and stands out in the crowd so he's as Brazilian as it gets. We don't get a lot of references in videogames, *compared to other countries,* but I'm fine with all the ones we get because they're almost surefire to be iconic. Jetstream Sam and Eddy Gordo are other great examples.
To me Blanka will allways be an older version of the Amazon from the nes Pro Wrestling. He was on his way home from that tournament when the plane was struck by lightning and gave him his electrical powers
Japanese: yeah he lived in the jungle and got his powers by being struck down in a plane by lightning. "Oh it's like a Mahvel supa hero origin" Americans: Oh I guess it's like that brazilian fighting style? "Those yanks ah talking out theh awsses!"
I was always either a Ryu or Ken main I learned how to use all the SF2 characters including Blanka, but I thought Blanka was too simple to use. As far as looks goes, I go for Chun Li and Cammy. I prefer is SF 2 look and Alpha 3 look, and somewhat in SF 4 also,
I loved all the champions in the original arcade version. I would skip lunch at school to save my $1.50 and spend it playing 6 games of Street Fighter 2. I do want to say I loved Blanka but omg if you hit him out of his roll the damage he took was insane. I think if Bison hit his roll with a psycho crusher it would outright kill Blanka even at full life lol. Good times.
Blanka’s always been goofy as hell to me, so them leaning into that doesn’t bother me at all. And the hell you mean his grab attack is “vampiric”? He’s biting them like an animal, a move that leans into his appearance and plane-crash back story. Blanka will always be a favourite of mine and was a perfect beginner’s character in SF2 due to his easy to pull off move set and the reach of some of his attacks.
Does anyone remember the Street Fighter figures that were kind of like G.I.Joe's? I had most of them and remember Blankas figure was an absolute beast. It's probably the best one in the line.
Blanka's figure/body was a repaint of The Dreadnok action figure named Road Pig. I had them as well. Are you saying Blanka's figure was the best of The SF action figures or of the G.I.Joe line?
I don't see how this can really be seen as the fall of Blanka outside of his SF6 avatar looking pretty derpy. I thought his wild haired SF5 avatar looked pretty ferocious and cool. Ever since the very first game he has fit the wild but misunderstood monster trope. Even in SF2, his story ended with a cute scene where he reunited with his momma. I still freakin' hate the overalls though and that chonky kind of goofy model he has in SF6.
I never understood why Blanka is always drawn with dark green skin and deep red hair in artwork, but yet in the game, he's always shown with skin that's clearly yellow, and his hair is more of a reddish-orange. Why the color discrepancy?
Ryu wasn’t the essayist to play. Blanket Honda and Chung lei was due to the button bashing. Then any one else who had forward back up down moves. Also blanket was really good in sf2 as he had an unstoppable head but
I really don't get what the beef is here. Blanka has always been a ridiculous concept, with poorly thought out backstory. He just looked cool thats it. I think he looks great in the newest game. The backstory even makes a bit more sense. and I always thought he got his powers from electric eels. Thats what I remember reading in the instruction manual for snes. I don't know, as a kid I loved the design and always wanted to play as him, but his fighting style always kinda sucked in my opinion, so I would always pick Ken, simply because I prefer Red over white lol
So wait… she gave him The anklets when he was a child…. He’s now a muscle bound mutant… so he’s either got the weakest saddest ankles ever or that lady lied to that poor beast man.
"Less can be more." This... made me think of Boba Fett or midichlorians. I mean, even his original ending in SFII made the concept hit a little less hard.
weird obsession of making Blanka this horrific beastly character when what made him special was he was just wasnt that type of character he has a beast of with a soft heart
so i stopped watching this channel ages ago because of the whole thing about every time he said RYU he would go on a rant about why he would say it like that, im 42 and yes when i was younger all my friends would say it wrong until we saw street fighter 2 the animated movie, so im currently 20 seconds into the video and well done you have pronounced RYU correctly, i do quite enjoy the video's but i just couldn't listen to that anymore but hopefully i can get back into your content
I HATE HATE HATE what they did to my boy Blanka. Hate it so much. He was SO much cooler when we weren’t really exactly sure what he was, he was beastly, feral, almost werewolf like. It would have been so much cooler if Capcom had leaned into that direction. Instead they made him apelike to humanize him more I’m guessing. Lame.
