I and 3 fellow Marines passed the accident scene en route from Pensacola to New Orleans for a weekend liberty. I recall that it took several hours of crawling along to reach the scene, and I remember the terribly mangled car. We didn't find out until the next day who the victims were. Passing that car was a shocking and sobering experience that one could never forget.

I remember when this happened. I was almost 10 years old. I was playing on the front porch. The radio was on and the announcer came on with the announcement that Jayne Mansfield had died in a car accident and that she had been beheaded. This was a very awful thought to a little 9 year old girl. Jayne Mansfield was beautiful I thought as a little girl and she was of course. I remember my dad came home from work and I ran to tell him the news. This moment in time has stuck with me my whole life. Your going through that account of what happened made it even more real. I’ve always felt so sorry for her and her children. I think they were sleeping in the back seat. I remember hearing about that fog machine and how it must have obscured the drivers view. It’s interesting to hear it was not in use. I heard years later that Jayne did not get decapitated but did hear about the top of her head being removed and about her wig being mistook for her head. Jayne Mansfield is just a memory for most but she was a big deal in those days, and her horrible death was big news, just like Marilyn Monroe. Such a tragedy. May she Rest In Peace…
I have read and seen a lot regarding her death over the years but this is by far the most in depth reporting of her tragic accident ever. You have cleared up a lot of misconceptions about it and also this is the first time I have ever heard that her children were originally in the front seat of the car. It is truly a miracle from God that those beautiful children weren't killed as well.
@@williegordon9188 I wish I had an answer to that, as my first husband was killed in an accident cause by a careless driver years ago. My wife was employed at Gus Stevens when JM. performed there. We attended her last performance the night before the accident. She was wearing the white dress. I remember the young kid who was the driver of the car... The next morning when driving by the club there were multiple police cars. I would disagree with the premise that it wasn't foggy that night..but..patches of fog . I remember driving that stretch a couple times the two things I remember most..1. Running into a swarm of bugs once or twice covered the windshield where visibility was very bad. 2. It would be clear visibility and all of a sudden you would run into a patch of fog...zero visibility. Note: I was in the military based on Biloxi at that time... I'm sure residents of that region would agree with my analysis.
@ronkotcher4834. Absolutely correct, Sir. Lots of fairly heavy fog at the crash site where my wife and I were stopped and waited for the wrecked car and Semi to be removed from the road. We were returning to Florida from Mission Bch Ca. That accident had taken place less than an hour previous to our stop.

A truly tragic occurrence. This famous accident resulted in large trucks being equipped with what they call 'Mansfield Bars' (named after Jayne Mansfield) on the back-end of trucks, which prevent cars from going 'under' the back, minimizing the chance of a catastrophic accident and/or decapitations.
If this Electra was really going between 60 and 80, the Mansfield bar might not have saved them, but it has, no doubt, saved many others. In some jurisdictions, tractor trailers are also required to have side barriers, but the way we configure them in this country, with the rear axles attached to the cargo boxes, makes such protection complicated. In Europe, most such vehicles consist of cab towing a flatbed (which keeps its side protection) and the container is placed on top of the flatbed.
You did an excellent job with this video. The narrative was straight forward and factual. And you finally cleared up the true trauma on Mansfield’s injuries. And you didn’t drag her through the mud with stories of the less desirable and darker side of some of her private life. She was a talented lady who left us too soon. Nuf said.

Very interesting. Thank you for all the work in researching and presenting this. The tragic crash also led to the development of what was referred to as the “Mansfield bar” a safety device on the rear of trailers which were intended to prevent cars from running underneath the trailer in a collision
Ironically its doubtful that the bar they have now would have changed the results, most of them will fail when hit at those kinds of speeds especially by a 66 Electra which is not a light car

I read up about this a few years ago, and the details are really grim. The official cause of death was a "cranial evulsion". An evulsion injury is when something literally gets torn or ripped away. So she wasn't actually decapitated. Her cranium from her eyebrows upwards was torn away from the top of her head. Interestingly, it was that accident that resulted in a certain metal bar to be fitted on the back of all trucks to prevent vehicles going underneath the rear of a truck. All trucks have them, and they're known as Mansfield Bars.

The biggest mistake made that night was allowing her daughter's fiancee to drive the car and nobody's talking about him. Why was he driving so fast, and why did Jayne put not only her life, but the lives of her young children, in the hands of a young, inexperienced, and reckless driver? I've been held captive in the passenger's seat with a young and careless driver many years ago and I have to tell you it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I finally had enough and yelled at them to slow the BLEEP down as I braced for an imminent death. To think they might have lived full lives had Sam or Jayne been driving that night...
@@JAAB9296Yes, someone who saw the Buick that night said it was zooming down the highway "like a bolt of lightning", or basically really really fast. It doesn't matter what the speed limit is, 70MPH is too fast to be driving on a two lane highway, especially at 2AM and where there doesn't appear to be any street lamps. Even if there was a truck spraying insecticide (which has been debunked by the way), he should have slowed down to compensate for poor visibility. The accident is 100% Ron's fault.
Back then car headlights were weaker and truck rear lights small and ineffectual compared to modern vehicles which also now have big reflectors etc. Also modern trucks have been mandated to have a low crash bar on the back to prevent cars smashing right through underneath the truck which is how car passengers get killed and it happened a lot years ago. It might have been the actual Mansfield accident that caused that legislation to come into effect.
Wow-I'm glad this cleared up the rumor of Jayne Mansfield being beheaded. The wig confuse people. I know it doesn't help Jayne at all, but I'm sure she would be grateful that someone cleared up that rumor. It was horrible!
First, thanks for putting together the most accurate and thorough account of what happened. I live not far from the accident site, so this has always been a part of local lore for many years. What struck me most was the cost to prepare Ms. Mansfield. The cost to embalm and prepare her body with a casket, $2,883, was steep for the year 1967. The US dollar is practically 9 times more today. That would mean, in today's cost based on today's worth of the dollar, her body preparation ran more than $25,500. Like I said . . . steep! I know someone who works for a local funeral home and I asked him about that cost. He said Bolton Funeral Home was taking advantage of the fact that she was a rich, Hollywood celebrity. He estimates that the total cost, even for a premium service back in 1967, shouldn't have run more than $400-500 and cannot see how this should have gotten over a thousand even if there were some additional services requested. Bolton made a killing off her and her family.
I definitely remember this accident, since I had just graduated from the 8th grade at the time, & it was during Summer vacation. I remember it making a great impression of horror on me. I always thought she was beheaded by the accident, but now I know the truth!
True. No decapitation. I have actual pictures of my father and the car in the basement of the New Orleans police department day after the accident where he took many pictures including one where he is pointing to brain and skull bone on and in the car. Police on the scene and who arein the pics told him same story that obviously she had severe head trauma, but no decapitation.
I traveled long distances with my parents in those days. There were few major highways in those days and those that existed didn’t connect with each other. So, the speed at which the car was traveling was not excessive in my memory anyway. I remember my parents driving 60-80 mph on roads like that one.
I know this might sound morbid but…Was that Jane Mansfield’s blood on the side of the door and if so is it still there on the car? Does the car clocks still say that time? Did previous owners try to clean it up or is it in it’s true original form?! Sorry so many questions but I find it so fascinating!
I doubt that. My Father owned a 65 Buick Wildcat. I drove that car at some high speeds and it was not road worthy to handle those types of speeds. What I heard was 70 to 80mph.
Enjoyable video. I lived near there all during the 1960's, and regularly drove those roads. I'll respectfully add a few comments. The picture shown around 2:58 of the video is of the wrong White Kitchen. There were two White Kitchens (same owner), one on U.S. 11 (Front Street) in Slidell (the pictured one), and one on U.S. 90 at the junction with U.S. 190. I visited both often. You explored the correct site (on U.S. 90) . The one in the picture burned to the ground one weekday morning in 1962, resulting from a kitchen fire. It happened at the height of the Cuban missile crisis; volunteer firefighters were summoned by repeatedly sounding the town's air raid siren, making some wonder if WW3 was breaking out. The White Kitchen on U.S. 90 (where Jayne Mansfield may have stopped) was busy 24/7 in those days. The words "Package Liquors" were painted prominently over the main entrance. Mississippi was legally a "dry" (prohibition) state until the mid-1960's, and the White Kitchen on U.S. 90 was the nearest place on the Louisiana side of the state line to legally buy a bottle. There was also a large and busy gas station almost directly across U.S. 90 from the White Kitchen, on the west side of the U.S. 190 intersection. Those businesses disappeared about 50 years ago. Newly-built I-10, combined with legalized liquor in Mississippi, took away almost all the traffic.
Thank you for this. Another tragic fact missing was that there were empty liquor bottles in the vehicle. After getting her cash payment after this last performance, sandwiches and liquor was requested for the trip. Look closely at the crash photos you will see the liquor bottles.
@Joy Graham Travis My comment is more of a question, as I noticed the hard liquor bottles in photos as well. Do they know when and where the alcohol was purchased? And was driver's blood ever drawn for alcohol level testing? Can't imagine it not being, but ... P.S. Love your name! 😊

Just realized that was where I bought my first bottle of booze. Also at that time the drinking age was 18 in Louisiana. The MS Coast and State were technically dry but as long as bar owners paid the "black market tax" booze flowed freely.
Thanks for the video Scott when I was eight or nine years old in 1968 I witnessed a horrific car accident caused by a mosquito fogging machine best of my memory. It was North Myrtle Beach near the barefoot landings. A couple on their honeymoon had slowed to a crawl to go through the fog and another elderly man and Wife came through without slowing and slammed into the newlyweds. I remember, looking at the steering wheel, broke off in the man’s stomach and blood coming out. The highway there was a two lane then !
Must remember that the lights on vehicles back then were no where near as bright as those of today, nor were the brakes very efficient, especially when trying to slow such a heavy vehicle like that which was barrelling down the highway! It was probably merciful that the three of them died on impact due to the fact that back then cars didn't even have the most rudimentary safety features such as seat-belts, etc.! Presumably what saved the children from serious injuries was that were most likely asleep lying along the seats or luggage placed in the rear foot-wells (remember doing this as a kid on road-trips with my family in the late '60s!).
She was killed when her head hit the back of that truck taking the top of her head off , brain matter on the truck , and road , it wasn’t a pretty open casket , back then the funeral director , or who ever made the body up just used his skills to mak it look like her , but I bet , it didn’t come close , my aunt was a funeral director , in the middle of Florida, and we went down to see her back in the early 70’s , we had a tour of the whole funeral home , and I was really into , the whole dead body thing , and she told me some of the worst facial reconstruction, stories I ever heard , and I have been to at least 100 funerals , over my 68 years , and every one of them , that had a open casket had the same impact on me , whether family or friends they all looked ,dead ! Once that soul is gone , they all looked like a body , with a slight resemblance to the person , they where alive ! @Dee Cee Have you considered donating your body for science? Useable organs will be taken first for transplant for the living, and remains left then used for research and teaching purposes. I heard many years ago that Jayne contacted a psychic before the accident who told her to stay away from Sam Brody. That her life would be in danger. Of course, Jayne shrugged off the warning and continued to see him. Don't know if that story is true, but it was passed around in the psychic community at that time.
Very interesting! I do hate that there are so many lawsuits after something like this. I mean there is a point where we all must look at what responsibility we have in any given situation. It is not always the other person's fault.
Such a tragic way to die. As a huge fan of Mariska’s I think about this accident and it makes me so sad that she lost her mom this way and we could have lost her too.
I find the ephemera in these historical videos endlessly fascinating. It shows what people at various times thought to be important information. Reading thru the death certificate, I am astonished at the level of detail recorded of her existence, and the absence of her social security number. It also shows that dying was an expensive business, even back then, and even when totally accidental. The bill from the funeral home nearly approaches the sales price of the Buick that caused her trip to the mortuary.
It was stated that the Buick was $5000 ish new. That was a heck of a lot of money in 1967. Believe minimum wage was $1.25 hour then. Probably most working people then were driving 49-54 basic sedans still.
@@davestewart2067 Yes, absolutely, which makes the bill from the mortuary home even more unbelievable. At least when buying a car, you can shop around and haggle and walk away from any deal you don't like. With the mortuary, there is hardly a chance to do any of those things.
