From the town of Butare, I hopped on board a minibus and headed to the town of Nyamagabe, the launching point to the site of the Murambi Genocide Memorial, just a few kilometres up the hill. Here, I encountered row after row of (former) schoolhouses, packed with the mummified corpses of the victims of the genocide, each preserved in lime. Instead of burying these victims in a mass grave, this memorial site has preserved the horrors of the genocide in the most visceral way possible. You will truly never be the same after visiting this site.
From Murambi, I headed back to Kigali and spent some time checking out the city's new convention center and doing some shopping, before heading to the airport to say goodbye to Rwanda and head to my next country of Ethiopia. Rwanda is an amazing country - drop everything and go! You will not be disappointed.
