sad fact: families of patients/victims have been trying to erect a disability museum here forever and it has been blocked, and was eventually bought by the private contractor who opened it as a halloween attraction to make a bunch of money. people wanting to preserve the memory are super against the attraction, mostly bc it makes a mockery of a sick/disabled folks. i went before i knew and it was a great haunted house honestly, but in retrospect i definitely wish i had given money to the preservation/memorial initiative instead

People also don't realize that there are patents from Penhurst still living. It didn't close until December of 87. Children who were placed there as infants or toddlers could be as young as their late 30s.

as a person who works with people with developmental disabilities, the horrors that happened at Pennhurst are not uncommon even today. Just 5 years ago, one of my participants had their shoulder blade broken by a member of staff trying to restrain them. My participant is NOT violent and would never hurt anyone. He wasn’t going to harm himself. The staff just wanted to do it. These people get a sick sort of pleasure from putting themselves above these people who have likely suffered all kinds of abuse at their hands, and the hands of others. These people exacerbate the issues that the patients already have. So many patients i know have panic attacks and flash backs to their abuse in these kinds of home.

My friends older brother had his wrist and elbow broken by one of the staff at his psychiatric hospital. He's such a sweet boy and I've never known him to be violent. :(

Sometimes it's not just the workers but even people who just don't understand or are just assholes. I had a friend who worked part-time with kids with mental disabilities (some of them quite server) and they were out in the city on a trip and were having lunch on the steps of Federation Square (an events centre with outdoor and indoor activities and art gallery) and some random dude walks by, looks and says "Oh look, feeding time at the zoo," What an absolute prick!

What's interesting to me is, I 100% share Shane's beliefs, but if you put me in an abandoned asylum at night with a flashlight I would behave 100% like Ryan. It's one thing to know there's no such thing as ghosts, but it's another thing to remember it under those circumstances. I wonder how Shane does it.

All jokes aside, I really hope Ryan is taking care of his mental health. While a lot of people make fun of him for getting so easily scared of the paranormal, he genuinely believes in this stuff, which make these trips really traumatizing for him. He's gotten so freaking close to a mental breakdown on camera, it's actually sorta heartbreaking.

I am a sceptic like Shane, but I still get spooked by dark abandoned places, probably just the general fear of not knowing what exactly might be around me, however unlikely, like a random violent criminal or a lost bloodthirsty animal. My vivid imagination betrays me, I get all caught up in “what if?” scenarios, I honestly don’t know how Shane stays so cool.

I'm more horrified by the history and cruelty that took place in most of the places they go to. I also can't help but get very sad for the victims, if spirits are real it will be no wonder why they'd haunt, I'd even understand if they were to be vengeful. I know I would be if I suffered like they did in their lifetime.

It's literally scanning for radio transmissions. You'll pick up radio stations, walkie talkies, aircraft and controllers, emergency services, baby monitors, anything! The idea that we should assume every random noise is a ghost is ridiculous. The entire idea of the box is designed to induce false positives. And if you listened to it without the subtitles you'll realise those tiny noises could be ANYTHING, they just use suggestive subtitles to make you interpret it that way.

As a disabled person and someone who has been in a ward myself being called children is still pretty common place, infantilisation is sadly still very rampant. Especially when it comes to things like free will and all too common is death under carers whether it be from neglect and/or actual murder, usually it's swept under the rug as disabled people are still highly looked down upon. The experiences I've had within this ward I went to last year definitely cemented my experiences of basically not being seen as an equal amongst most nurses.

Shane is very open about not believing in the supernatural, so that could be why he never really experiences anything. They can. They actually are kind of feeding on the fear, the people is scared of them the more energy they will gain to actually starting to mess around or even show themselves if they have enough energy, that's why they often kept on messing with the people that are scared the most because they kept feeding them energy, while they won't do it to skeptics or people like Shane because they'll just waste their energy. You can believe me or not but my family have a very strong spiritual connection that why at least know that much but no we're not like medium or anything, rather just people that somehow attract spirits more.

i went to this tour and there was a "tour guide" there who had worked at pennhurst in its last 10~15 years. she didn't seem to really focus on the horrible things going on in her stories. there was a mentally disabled person on the tour who asked a lot of questions, and based on how she was answering them i didn't have a lot of faith in how she dealt with patients that may have been lower functioning.

I don't think Pennhurst Asylum is haunted. Most, if not all of these noises, can be explained away by the fact that it's an old building surrounded by birds. To clarify, I *do* believe in the paranormal. I just don't think 95% of "haunted" places are actually haunted.
