This was such a fun but challenging video to make! Explaining 5 styles in one video felt a bit daunting but I think I got everything I wanted to say in there! Sometimes it felt like a bit of a fun history lesson so I hope I explained everything properly! EDIT: I am also aware of the 2 dog hairs on my shoulder, no need to remind me! 😂

I think you can definitely have a maximalist space with a minimalist outlook. I love the stuff I've collected in my life travels and adventures but I can't bear visual clutter! 🤞🏾 I've achieved that but I think it's a lot about being really intentional with placement.

A couple of things that are not often mentioned when talking about Art Deco is that the style was also a reaction to a previous one, namely Art Nouveau: that style was very ornated with a lot of shapes inspired by nature, plants, flowers (which itself was a reaction to more traditional 19th Century styles). Art Deco broke away from this by simplifying everything and introducing sharp straight lines and geometry. And this was very much inspired by African design styles, patterns, motifs and materials, to give a flair of luxury and exoticism. This is where all the Art Deco wallpaper patterns and gold details come from for example.

@eljaykayaye1186

Art Nouveau broke away also, inspired by Japanese woodblock and trade with Asia, Egypt etc. Globalism is not new just tech advanced. The trade routes, we were always exchanging, borrowing, merging ideas even if not openly. Not saying this always went smoothly. 🤔
@beckerderbacker4976
@beckerderbacker4976 2 года назад
Art Nouveau was also very organic and feminine and was sort of the last hurrah of the Gilded Age. Art Deco embraced industry, progress, a search for a new future not defined by the decadence of the 19th century--but ironically, decadent in its own way.

Thank you for mentioning the sustainability side of maximalism! As someone who has studied art, I’ve always loved the layering of multiple textures, colors, and patterns, but was hesitant to call myself a maximalist due to the negative stereotypes. I’ve made an effort to curate my pieces and buy vintage or used when possible, so it’s great to see the recognition that you can have a maximalist aesthetic without contributing to overconsumption.
@Nick_Lewis

I also breathed a sigh of relief at the sustainability comment. I tried to go Art Deco in my new home and gave up, because I’m a Maximalist at heart!
@katherineparis8208
@katherineparis8208 2 года назад
I also want to clarify that my definition of maximalism may be slightly different than the actual technical definition. While I love the aesthetic of mixing multiple textures, design styles, colors, and patterns, I still try to only purchase items that I either need for a practical purpose or (for my art or purely decorative pieces) that I know I will love and enjoy for years to come, and I choose invest in “fewer, nicer things”. I love that even without a ton of individual items you can create a very maximalist space by choosing a couple of statement pieces that contrast in style, texture, size, or color. I think that maximalism can be overwhelming and go pretty extreme, but that it can be implemented with many other design styles by just “turning up” the contrast a little.
@Draggonny
@Draggonny 2 года назад
@@katherineparis8208 He chose his examples of maximalism wisely. So many maximalists have so many clashing, bright colours and patterns it makes your eyes want to bleed but his examples were bold, statement pieces tied together through colour palette or shape. Loud but not aggressive.

Related to warm mini, japandi, and maximalism, I think wood is back in a big way. I’m seeing a lot of panelling, slats (esp vertical), high quality furniture pieces that celebrate the grain and structure of the wood. Warm but elegant.

This! My style is warm minimalist/traditional but one thing I've loved is bringing different textures of wood to my space. There are a lot of repeating elements and simplicity in my space and one of those is various forms of textured wood.
@GentleTaipan
@GentleTaipan 2 года назад
Based on the pictures you're showing, one of the differences between Japandi and Warm Minimalist is material. Japandi leans into natural material or natural textures, while wam minimalist has more metal and even surfaces. Moreover, Japandi design is "down to earth", literally. Furniture are low and hug the ground and most have no legs/clearance underneath. This is echoes traditional Japanese lifestyle: you sit on the ground, eat on the gound, occasionally cook on the ground (floor hearth), and sleep on the ground. The floors are straw-based tatami, which means any furniture with legs would damage it overtime.

I'm planning on doing my living room art deco too. I love that wallpaper with the green marble tile effect but it's just too dark for my space. I always fall in love with the jewel tones or the charcoal grey colorways but sadly I think I'm going to have to compromise with a warm, light, neutral which just doesn't have the same visual impact. Hearing Nick mention that there's such thing as “our own signature style” is removing a heavy weight on my shoulders at the moment. I find it hard to renovate without a designer to guide my choices... Hopefully, thanks to this channel i master the basic concepts and feel more confident in my expenses. (For example, i've FINALLY bought a new lamp yesterday that i've been loving for weeks, to go over my antique dining table. It's a designer's "modern interpretation of a classic silhouette." Without any design concepts in mind, i would have bought an antique chandelier and my old house would seem haunted! 😂)

Art deco + maximalism is my jam! I inherited some really high quality, dark wood furniture (including a huge curio cabinet!) from my grandparents that will just go perfectly with some jewel toned and brass furniture, a gallery wall, and a antique travel trunk converted into a coffee table. I'm so glad that having curated "clutter" is now a trend because the thought of minimalizing my space was always too terrifying, lol.

Personally I prefer the blend of warm and cool neutrals blended together in aesthetically pleasing ways.people considering “maximalism” need to consider the longevity and upkeep, cleaning, of having many objects around. It is possible to have a maximal sensory experience without clutter depending on the colors, textures, and geometries of what you choose.
@zakosist

I think I already kind of did maximalism style before knowing what it it, at least I have a lot of different decor I show of. Lots of different colors withing it too. Mostly paintings (many I actually painted myself), some posters and small sculptures, I think they go well together and is sort of "intentionally messy". I also got an aquarium last year and that adds some work of course. But I dont think there is a lot of extra cleaning with that style. There is some dust collection over time but that isn't overly visible and very quick to clean anyway. Longlivety isn't really an issue, I think those objects can last for many years. Furniture will probably wear at the same pace regardless of your style. Actual clutter comes mostly from food (including the container) and secondary clothes. My home is honestly never perfectly tidy (but also nowhere near what you see on some extreme hoarder pictures), but I do clean up on a regular basis and have mostly clear floor space

Having recently worked at a dump site, the unbelievable amount of big box furniture that arrives at the dump site is depressing. At the other end of the scale, the amount of beautiful vintage pieces that get tossed because no one wants them is also stunning. The maximist appeals because it is a look that is always interesting, that never really dates, and doesn’t have that put together by an interior designer look, and incorporates recycling. I have pieces of wrought iron furniture mixed with vintage sideboards and modern pieces with contemporary lighting. Would it make a magazine photo? Probably not but every piece means something to me.

Another very helpful and useful video! Trying to predict trends is especially useful in planning the look of spaces that can't (unless one is on an unlimited budget) readily be made over, such as kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, major furniture pieces and other pricey items. It would be very interesting to see you take a basic neutral space and layer over some of the elements from 2022 trends, as most of us have to do, with some sort of a limited budget in mind.

I’m lucky to have some authentic art deco pieces from when my grandparents were newly weds in the 1930s. I hope I’ll be able to integrate them into the decor of my new country house.

So excited for Art Deco to come back! I worked in the Carew Tower in Cincinnati for several years and it was built in that style in the early 30’s. It’s a stunning building and you can see all the details throughout the interior. The Hilton hotel is attached and they have a restaurant called Orchid at Palms Court with the original Art Deco decor. Check it out online. It’s stunning! And also, it’s very haunted. So that’s fun too.

So relieved and pleased that the white and grey, sharp-edged minimalism is on the way out. It always looked clinical and someone was about to perform an autopsy on the vast, empty kitchen island counter. My reaction has always been ugh when looking at them in glossy mags.

I like warm minimalism and Japandi, but I like cool minimalism more. White, light gray, light/icy blue, and touches of black feel so calming and airy, which makes me feel much less stressed and anxious. Art Deco, while on the other end of the spectrum, is really cool too

90s boxy TVs will come back in style. I miss having a smaller one in my bedroom, it created this weird "portal" connection and sucked you in... very different viewing experience than flat TVs.

Thanks Nick. After I watched the guy that does his version of 'no children, no pets, no problem.' Cute but unrealistic. Then I go over to Kiva. And watch her videos and just smile. At least she's got her head screwed on right and admits that we all have an inner slob. And we all have an inner perfectionistic tilt. Somehow or another we have to mesh those two and come out with something where we can find a small tad of happiness that we can wallowing around in. Wasn't that profound?. Ha ha And then yours comes up and I get that nice balance which is always delightfully fun. And I do appreciate. I have found that I have fallen in love with SW Evergreen frogs color. I've always liked color but the colors were either yuck Gerrish or are're kidding me. And those should not be the names of the colors that you want unless of course you like that kind of thing. So I am enjoying your comments on what we can do to make our place (if you're even more than comfortable to us personally) . But I still plan to keep my pets. I'm trying to teach them how to vacuum. But you can't herd cats. And you can't teach them how to vacuum. They sure know how to dish it out. But they really sure don't know how to clean up after themselves. Take care. I offer you and yuyrs peace and blessings from Central Florida Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Oh my goodness I thought it was Monday. What happened to Monday? Oh God help me -- I misplaced Monday. I think most of us are not looking to completely redo what it is we love. We just want to take what we love and make it usable and gives us more joy in the long run. I don't think that's too much to hope for in people or in our homes or anything else in life.I can't remember what, and I watch Cuba who is just delightfully funny, and good ideas, I come over to the adult side of the room to see what your thoughts are. I'm still shaking out my head over someone that wants to make your home look like you're home but I think you would have to banish your children to the backyard and have no pets because you shouldn't have pets. And tell them I say screw you. So let's see what you got going here take care thank you so much. I hope you had a decent and peaceful and quiet Thanksgiving. If you want to of course. Or whatever. And take care of yourself. It's hard to remember that Thanksgiving isn't celebrated in every country of the world. So I have to laugh when I see people that are in a different country wondering why we care about a turkey and not killing Indians. And then I realize I still don't understand that either. So peace.

Started watching and immediately thought, so Warm Minimalism is just Japandi? Thank you for going into the nuances!

While none of these styles are my cup of tea, I do like the look of Japandi and Art Deco and could see using some of this mixed in to my home - I would not do any of the other three. I like how you described each style so that they would appeal to anyone looking for something new or to complement what they are already doing.

I'm in the same boat and find those two are awesome though realistically speaking I'm leaning towards Japandi and am not bold enough for an art deco style home. Hopefully I can find some pieces that would blend well with the Natural look of japandi.

For someone that thought didn't care about trends i sure got very excited about the rundown of these. In fact, i just realized that my pinterest board that i thought was so unique is actually a combination of all of them. I guess that is also the root of my frustration about my flat, since i seem to be unsuccesfully trying to get minimalism and maximalism together. And that as a naturally messy person haha.

You could maybe try to do different rooms in different styles but keep the colour palette cohesive throughout your entire home? Or keep the colour palette not entirely cohesive and have one extra colour "allowed" in specific rooms and give a bit of a bigger nod or focus to one style in each space. Lets say you like red and want it to be a main theme: red and pink palette could make for a really nice cosy and textured maximalist art deco bedroom, while a more minimalist living room could be done in a warm beige and red, with some intentional japandi choices and one post modern center piece. Maybe the other way around with a minimalist calm sleeping space and an inspiring maximalist living room would suit your needs and personality more?

Maximalism immediately made me feel like someone was sitting on my chest. I think my mom was a bit of a maximalism growing up and I always felt like it was too much. To each there own! I’m glad I know what my style isn’t for sure 😝😝. I definitely lean more minimal modern farmhouse but would love to include more Scandinavian. I’m just not good enough to know how to do that successfully yet 🤷🏼‍♀️😕

Yay! In some ways warm minalism is similar to my style - intentional, curated, uncluttered, though also plenty of Hygge. But much more drawn to neutral and warm. I really don't feel at home in silver, gray, white, black. Hope you make a video on Hygge.

Interesting contrast between minimalism and maximalism. Maximalism seems definitely more energizing and expressive but feels chaotic to me. I need the more meditative, calm feel of a more minimal or at least transitional space. But I’m drawn to the maximalism as an art form to look at in pictures. It’s so creative.
