I love that in the introduction to her character, you dont see her face yet, we see her car, the building, her legs and feet, her fur coat, all building up the atmosphere, the music ties it together splendidly and then we get a full face reveal but it's almost like a jump scare. We dont get to see her face til anita turns around since shes standing behind her without her noticing.

Fun fact: Glen Close originally declined the role as Cruella due to scheduling roles conflicts. They tried other actresses for the role but didn’t make the cut. but Close was able to finish her stage role “ sunset blvd” before closing auditions for the movie, when asked again by the producers, she accepted the role. How did Anita not instantly pick up on the fact that Cruella was thinking of using dog fur and then voluntarily make that statement about puppies? She works for a fashion brand obsessed with using fur, designs clothing that she knows will be made of fur, and just had her fur draped boss ask about the texture of the fur of her dog in correlation to a fur fashion design🤣🤣🤣
@sdm47
@sdm47 3 года назад
Would that be the first assumption you make about your best friend? You’d probably trick yourself into believing that she was joking But even without that Cruella doesn’t *only* do fur, fur happens to be her favorite but that’s not *all* that she deals in Anita at this point doesn’t even know that Cruella is gonna have it made from fur, and when it is confirmed that fur will be used she still doesn’t suspect anything because of the reasons above It only finally clicks with her when Cruella acts like she’s entitled to the puppies and then they disappear after she vows to “get even”

The best scene in the entire movie (which, sadly, although the movie gives me such incredible nostalgia, really says a lot about how bland the rest of the movie was)! Seriously, so much was said in this scene with barely a word of dialogue spoken! Everything from the design of the building, to the car, to the way Cruella drops her cigarette ash on the person greeting her, to the fact that they cover her in head to toe with black fur clothes (basically to symbolize that she's not even trying to hide how vile she is), to the way her iconic coat drags against the dirty sidewalk (a great point of symbolism there, as her massive fur coat is so iconic that it symbolized her even before this movie, and letting it drag on the filthy ground is the movie telling us "despite the high-class veneer, this woman is constantly dabbling in the most dirty and filth-ridden parts of society"), to how stressed her assistant is, to, of course, how how people basically scurry out of her way the moment she walks towards them, symbolizing how society treats extremely wealthy people like her who are constantly involved in illegal dealings (they basically just don't mess with them or even try to slow them down, even when they're so clearly guilty of wrongdoings that it's *literally* cartoonish)! For those wondering why she was so iconic and scary despite being so cartoonishly evil that it feels like it *should* be making you laugh (but somehow isn't), it's because, let's be honest, she is a scarily *accurate* portrayal of several *actual* extremely rich villains of society! Cruella De Vil, a woman who literally is named "Devil" and puts that *obviously* problematic name on *everything* symbolizes the members of society who are so wealthy that they can and will not only commit the most blatant and obvious illegal acts, but not even *try to pretend* they're not vile people, as well as how the rest of the world reacts to them (basically being so terrified of them that they either pretend not to see it, like Anita, or just run away, like almost everyone else)! She symbolizes the members of society who are so powerful, and *know* how grossly powerful they are, that they *flaunt* it to the point where they *actively* shout through a bullhorn how how "devilish" they are by breaking the vile meter over and over again (and almost obsessively putting their stamp on those vile acts in some form)! There are *so many* real-life examples of this throughout history, that seeing Cruella isn't hilarious and funny, but actually *terrifying* (even now, as an adult, Glenn Close's Cruella still scares me)! And it was *this* scene, the very first scene with her, that summed *all* of that up in *one* go with little to no dialogue, thus setting the tone for the rest of the movie! This scene alone deserved an Oscar! Well done!
@mazdakmina9493
@mazdakmina9493 3 года назад
PS: One other thing that's mind-blowing about this scene is how it establishes Anita's entire character dilemma perfectly! In this scene (yes, in this scene *alone,* even though Cruella only makes it *more* obvious to Anita in the *very next* scene), Anita's so "innocent," that even when Cruella is making it *beyond obvious* to her that she wants to do the disgustingly evil act of making a coat out of puppy fur, Anita refuses to believe she could be so evil! And it establishes the role Roger ends up playing in breaking Anita *out* of that denial, because Roger *notices* how vile Cruella is almost *immediately,* and even expresses his disdain for Cruella *right in front* of Anita! Perhaps the best example of this is the "the puppies are not for sale" scene, where Roger tells Cruella straight up *over and over* again (clearly aware of Cruella's intention), and Anita keeps acting oblivious and asking things like, "what would you even do with 15 puppies?" Once again, it sums up a horrible truth about society! That even when the blatant and obvious truth about how evil someone is is staring people in the face, there are lots of naïve people who will *still* refuse to believe it! Cruella, a wealthy fur fashion designer who demonstrates how much she hates dogs, calling newborn puppies "horrid little white rats," gets so excited at hearing the puppies fur will grow and have spots that she *immediately* demands that they be "put in *a bag* (like a *literal* article of clothing)," and even though Roger- who only really has *that* interaction to go on to be able to discern Cruella's intentions- can *easily* tell and flat out *refuses* to even *consider* letting this woman have them, Anita- who has seen *way more* of Cruella, including *this* moment and the following meeting of her fawning over a spotted coat and straight up laughing about the idea of wearing Anita's dog as a coat (again in the following scene, where she *literally* says, "it would be like I'm wearing your dog!")- *still* refuses to believe the reality that is *very clearly* staring her in the face (at least, until the very end, before she finally drops her smile and repeats Roger's denial)! Seriously, that was one amazing thing about this movie! It truly captured *that* aspect of society perfectly (again, let me be clear, the cartoonish evil of Cruella *is* the point! That was done on purpose, and was *very* well done)! That entire first half of the movie by itself was incredible, and it honestly could end there (with Anita finally accepting reality and shunning Cruella thanks to Roger) and I'd consider it a masterpiece! The villain is stopped, Anita's arc of accepting reality is fulfilled, and Roger's arc of finding his self-worth despite feeling like society rejects him is fulfilled as well! I wish *that* was where the movie had ended! That would've been perfect!

Wow, spot on and couldn't have said it any better myself. The cinematography in this scene is absolutely incredible and like you said, says no much with no dialogue. This was always my favorite scene as she just radiates power and elegance. THIS is how you do a villain into scene!

@@mazdakmina9493 Even in the animated film, Anita didn't think Cruella did it and would be capable. But in the sequel, it is assumed she then knew while in the film, she finally figures it out and also realizes she is going to kill the puppies. This also led on to the police figuring out who was responsible for the Siberian Tiger missing her stripes.

0:10 Pongo: (narrating) Elsewhere in the city, there was an enormous corporation known as The House Of De Vil. So named because of its owner and company president, one Cruella De Vil. So named of her demonic appearance towards many who crossed her path. Yet, none of the employees under her shadow felt intimidated. The same could also be said for Anita, who was in the employ of this woman. Whenever Perdita saw her, she knew there was something more to her that she found suspicious. Not only her, but me as well. Maybe Anita should have taken a closer look at the woman’s operations.

I realised that Cruella De Vil has alot in common with Miranda Priestly from Devil Wears Prada. They are both introduced to the audience the same way, both fashion giants and designers and in charge of a million dollar industry. Cruella's last name is De Vil and Miranda in the devil in prada. The likeliness is uncanny.

My fav ep! I think she was wrapped in furs because she was a fiery and passionate nature! I first saw the film in 1998 when I was 5 years old... You won't believe it, but I really liked the episode where she comes to the de vil house. It was the image of a panther.... It was fascinating, because we don't see her face, but only her red mouthpiece (when I was little, I didn't understand that it was a" red stick " mouthpiece and took a red pencil and went home with it:- )) At first we don't see her face only her feet in black classic shoes with thin high heels and striped black tights, a long black fur train with white stripes... her confident walk. And the way she walked on the white catwalk.... wearing a hat with a veil, it created a mystery around her, and her power of expression said that she was a very strong woman... ( this is probably why I fell in love with the classic style of French minimalism, in 1990 it was fashionable and now I love it very much) I remember the look of her green eyes during her conversation with Anita... Yes, she did terrible things, but in the end I felt very sorry for her... When it fell into the molasses and into the pigsty... Glenn managed to capture her haggard expression... As an adult, I read her interview and how she approaches all her roles, trying to show the reasons for the behavior of her characters. She also managed to show it in Cruella, I think it made her image so mysterious and memorable, so the story continued... Even as a child, I felt that everything there is not simple and unambiguous... You know, I thought at the time that it really happened and I even wrote her a letter to the prison, I wanted to support her, I hoped that she would improve... I want to say a huge thank you to Glenn Close I wonder if we will see her cameo in the film?

@marlepeace9844
@marlepeace9844 3 года назад
Even if Anita covered up the drawing, it’s not like the rest of her desk isn’t practically LITTERED with spots; the pictures of her dogs, the close ups on the head piece which still show the spotted design and of course the drawing she was working on. One piece of zebra print ain’t gonna hide all that. I also find it a little funny how it seems Cruella doesn’t know the breed of dog despite working in fur, or Anita gives her a redundant answer. It could be because Cruella doesn’t view animal breeds highly and doesn’t care enough to learn, which is a hint to her nature (not like she needs more hints).
