One of my all time favorite films. I have the dvd but cant bare to watch it as it is so very sad. It made me a huge fan of her. A d I never had seen X Files. Have had to watch everything she has been in on britbox. I adore her. ❤❤❤❤
This is one of those cases where one wonders if the movie is just too good - it has no interest in making itself "marketable" - there's a purity of intention w Davies' films, a deeply personal focus - so what we get here is a masterpiece, and also the frustration of seeing it not getting the recognition it deserves - one key aspect, just one of its many treasures, is an astonishing performance from Gillian Anderson that's among maybe the top 5 I've ever seen - she's a similar unsung genius, like Davies
Terence Davies is one of the great directors who never get their due. Criterion finally picked up The Long Day Closes. Maybe they'll eventually get to Distant Voices Still Lives, The House of Mirth, and some of the others.
I love, love, love this novel and the film adaptation. Although the movie doesn't provide adequate background as to how Lily was brought up, one can surmise that she was sorely lacking in life skills. This is quite common in today's entitled youth who need life coaches and knowledge in the meaning of "adulting".
Do you know how much simpler it was back in the day? It was easy to get a job. Now it's next to impossible for young people and the digital age has made everything all the more complicated and confusing, I'm sure you'd agree to that.
