In the wake of P.T. and the reveal of Silent Hills, indie devs from all over the world discovered an untapped well of horror. One of these developers was SadSquare Studios, who brought the game Visage out from the darkness. After nearly a year since the game's full release, I've struggled to get Visage out of my head. So let's see why its core location is one of the most striking and memorable environments to come out of indie horror in years.

Yeah, I play a lot of horror games, but this is pretty much the only one that I’m stuck on not just because I often find it difficult and confusing but because it legitimately scares me too much to proceed sometimes. Post-P.T. horror of this kind gets to me because, like, I’ve never been in a creepy abandoned castle or haunted graveyard, or whatever else is typically a setting in the genre, but… I’ve been in houses like this. I’ve walked these kinds of halls when I’m the last one up at a relative’s place, or wander away from the crowd at a party. Gets a little too real!

It surprised me how anxious this game made me feel, especially after how critical I was of the game at first.

Having recently finished this game, it became one of my favorite indie horror games. Having not really enjoyed Layers of Fear, I didnt expect to love Visage as much as I did. A lot of its allure to me comes from the audio design. It manages to reach a similar level of atmosphere as PT did and for that alone I love it.

I've never played much for horror but this sounds really interesting. Always love seeing games trying new things and seeing any genre pushed some.

It's a bit traditional in its aesthetic tropes, but I still recommend this game. It pushed more new ideas than I thought it would.

Funny how I was sold on playing this game by a reviewer who suddenly dropped RU-vid and deleted/unlisted all of his content - makes this game even more creepy to me.

Out of curiosity, have you ever read Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves (2000)? Not the easiest book to read, but definitely something that horror enthusiasts and those who appreciate uncanny, subliminal spatiality might like. The house of Visage makes me think of it.

Not yet, but I have heard several folks tell me that it's a difficult, but compelling read.

The reason it felt so wrong when you switched locations in this game is because you switched to locations because of the story not simply just because it wanted to take you to a new place. When it takes you to a new location is trying to show you something that is significant to the overarching story. These locations to have a connection to the main house you just have to pay attention.

Do you ever think about makling a review about What Remains of Edith Finch?

That's a game I've been wanting to play for a while, so it's certainly possible.

Is this the game that begins with a first person view of a man killing (supposedly) his tied up family?... If so, I know why I never gave it a chance. I'm just not gonna hang around until such an awful scene is explained, and I doubt any context will make it worth it.

I mean...it's a game. It isn't real. You aren't really warranted an explanation.

@@kenshokram makes absolute zero sense as a response. Your point is that the scene was too upsetting and in poor taste to warrant going any further in the game. It isn't real and the game is basically a redemption arc. It ought to be pretty easy to stomach. Toughen up a bit.

@@sunderedsoul6495 horror can be about anything and any media that opens with shock value is childish, but you can go back to speaking like a bond villain on 6 month old RU-vid comments

Honestly I don’t think the game cares about explaining it really, there’s no redemption arc imo
