Hi Brian, and glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. 👍 It's suprising the history that's tucked away hidden in plain sight in the back streets of the UK. Thanks for commenting, enjoy the rest of your evening/day and all the best.

Hi Ste, yes so do I as the films take me back to being a kid when they used to show them on weekdays at 6pm on BBC2 around this time of year in the early 80's. Glad you enjoyed the video, enjoy the rest of your evening/day and all the best. 👍

Great video Mr H...In 2010 the Laurel and Hardy statue was installed in County Square, Ulverston as part of the regeneration of County Square. The statue was commissioned and paid for by the Sons of the Desert, the Laurel and Hardy Fan Club and was designed and sculpted by Graham Ibbesson. The statue is a 10% larger than life bronze sculpture showing the famous duo. Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston on June 16, 1890. The statue depicts him with his partner Oliver Hardy and the famous dog which appeared in many films - Laughing Gravy. The statue stands outside of the Coronation Hall, where in 1947 Stan and Ollie appeared on the balcony.

Hi Gary, glad that you enjoyed the video and many thanks for the additional info. 👍 We saw the statue of Stan and Ollie outside of the Coronation Hall as we was walking around Ulverston later during the Dickensian Christmas Festival that I mention in the video. Lots of people were either taking photographs or posing next to it so it's still a major attraction in the town ten years after it was installed. Stan visited the house that he was born in during the same visit to Ulverston in 1947 that he appeared on the balcony of the Coronation Hall with Ollie when the town presented Stan with a copy of his birth certificate to mark the occasion.

He may have been born there but all his happiest childhood memories were from North Shields and Tynemouth. He considered himself a Geordie right up until his death.

My grandpa Kitchin was born around the corner from there. He was two years younger than Stan. I imagine his family and my family knew each other. Would love to see it in person some day.

Very true Keith, I guess someone's beginnings is what defines them in later life and usually the poorer they were at the start the more grounded and down to earth they are when they do become famous. Anyway I hope that you enjoyed the video and all the best. 👍

Hi Gary, and great to hear that you enjoy the videos. 👍 Will definately check out the Stan Laurel related places in Bishop Auckland if I'm ever over in that part of the world. Looking at some photos online of the house in Bishop Auckland than Stan went to live in after leaving Ulverston it would seem that the Jeffersons had a thing for two bedroomed terraced houses although it must have been a squeeze as Stan had at least one older sibling by the time being the second of five children. Many thanks for commenting, enjoy the rest of your evening/day and all the best.

Thankyou for an informative video. Braving the weather in Cumberland for us like that. I had no idea about the Market there. *Makes mental notes* I have been involved in several residential activities with the Prince's Trust Volunteers up in that area, 20+ years ago! Beautiful area and knocking on the door of the Lake District. Thanks for another informative video! Looking forward to the next one. Stay well Mr H and family.
@MrHsHotPot
@MrHsHotPot 2 года назад
Hi Paul, I can see that you are old school in refering to Cumbria as 'Cumberland' as I said earlier to another commentator the Local Government Act 1972 has a lot to answer for. 😉 The Lake District and surrounding area are a beautiful part of the world but it is a bit bleak up there at this time of year although as I said i the video it does add to the ambience of the annual Ulverston Dickensian Festival which is well worth a visit if you haven't been before. Thanks once again for taking the time to comment and all the best. 👍

I bet it doesn't say Cumbria on his birth certificate
@MrHsHotPot
@MrHsHotPot 2 года назад
No I shouldn't imagine that it does Robert, it's strange when you come to think of how calling Cumberland, 'Cumbria' sounded wrong when they first renamed it back in 1974 but now for most of us it's the other way around! Hope that you enjoyed the video, enjoy the rest of your evening and all the best. 👍

From small acorns grow!!....amazing that this great pioneer of not just Comedy but also a pioneer in the art of moving pictures and how to create an interesting and fully immersible story line which has paved the way for countless other Comedy/Film geniuses over the decades. The effect this man had on future generations is staggering even more so when you see the humble property he began life in....Will also be paying homage to Stan by visiting Ulverston before I die...thank you for posting this!..😃👍...

Crikey that's near Barrow-in-Furness, I visited there years ago, when we were staying near Carlisle. Thanks Mr H 👍🏼 was interesting 😀 where was Hardy born 🤷🏼‍♂️
@MrHsHotPot
@MrHsHotPot 2 года назад
Hi DANTTN Y, glad that you enjoyed the video. 👍 Oliver Hardy was born Norvell Hardy in Harlem, Georgia in the United States in 1892 but unlike Stan his family was from a military background rather than a theatrical one with his father serving in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and his mother coming from a notable military family in Virginia at the time.

@@MrHsHotPot Thanks Mr H, I had no idea bout Ollie, wow! what a background 🤷🏼‍♂️ cheers mate 👍🏼
@MrHsHotPot

Although Ollie was always seen as being the glamourous one hailing from the United States especially on this side of the pond in many ways he had it a lot rougher than Stan did growing up as he never knew his father despite taking his stage name of Oliver from him as his father had died less than a year after Ollie was born. He also lost his older brother in a drowning accident despite Ollie pulling him from the river he couldn't resuscitate him which must have been an event that haunted him for the rest of his life.

Hi Mark, great to hear that you really enjoyed the video. 👍 I'd love to do this type of video for Oliver Hardy as well but as he was born in Harlem, Georgia in the United States his place of birth isn't as easy to visit as Stan Laurel's is. One place I'm hoping to visit again in the future when all this Covid madness is a distant memory is Los Angeles in California where Stan Laurel is buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park to do a follow up video to this one. Hope that you are enjoying your evening, thanks for commenting and all the best.

Hey Up Mick, not seen you around for a bit hope you and yours are keeping well. Yes you're right he would have been born a Lancastrian lad, the Local Government Act 1972 has a lot to answer for. We did visit the Ulverston Dickensian Festival shortly after making this video however I didn't film it as due to the snow they had cancelled the street parades and some of the street performers due to elf n safety which was a shame. We try to go each year but it's started to become just food stalls selling mulled wine at over inflated prices so we may give it a miss next year.

@@MrHsHotPot I saw an interview with Stan and he did say he was born in Ulverston, Lancashire. Stan had family ties to Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and the duo did visit the town, not sure whether they performed or not, i'm far too young to have been around then.

Hi MegaGarryM, Stan Laurel is also credited with being born in 'Ulverston, Lancashire' during his appearance alongside Oliver Hardy on the American version of 'This is your life' in 1954 with Ralph Edwards. Didn't know that he had ties with Dewsbury in West Yorkshire so thanks for the extra info. 👍 Hope you enjoyed the video and all the best.
