I finished it yesterday. Such a heartwarming and beautiful novel! When reading I imagined it being a Ghibli film, because it had very similar vibe - very calm and touching (I don’t usually drop a tear when reading books, but I definitely did here).

I really like Yōko Ogawa, I think all her novels are very different, my favourite would be Revenge (I read that one first) and I kinda feel like The Housekeeper and The Professor was the weakest of what I’ve read (still need to read Memory Police and Hotel Iris), I think my criticism is mainly it felt the most straightforward and probably too nice...but that’s just me.

I have a few of her books on my shelves waiting to be read. This one is probably the one that interests me the most, mainly because of the math-content. Glad to hear that you liked it. Next year for sure...

This is a great review of a really curious sounding book. My library does amazingly have this although it's on loan until the end of January.

I suggest you read Revenge by Ogawa next (it's a short story collection). It's my second favorite after The Memory Police. I think they are more translated works from her in French, sadly for the English readers.

The Housekeeper and the Professor as well as Revenge (interconnected short stories) by Yoko Ogawa are 2 of my favorites! I was also very disappointed with the Memory Police. So much so , I DNFd it.

I completely disagree with you in what you said about the memory police. I believe that the whole beauty of that book is that there is a lack of understanding of what is happening in the world the narrator is living in. I think that not understanding the why’s and the how’s makes it so much more effective... I loved that book as much (and even more) than I love this one. And I think it’s such a powerful piece of literature and art. I think people don’t get the whole point of it . (I’m sorry if it sound super aggressive)
