All the 80s music had a greater impact as we witnessed it. Later generations may appreciate the music, but will never experience it like those that lived it. The transitions from 1977 to 1982 was perhaps the most dramatic change in music history. Much of this was due to changing technologies.

And it ruined music as we know it, more specifically as the 80's wore on and they took it too far
@davedave8602

I think the 60's transition was even more extreme. Early 60's was still a continuation of the 50's sounds until the Beatles/British invasion hit...and then by 66/67, psychedelic and hard rock became significant.

According to the Who Sampled website, this song has been sampled in 41 different songs and has 53 versions. I've never found anything robotic about it, but I soon realized that it might be one of the first songs to show the female version of a male breakup story: a cool and surprising twist for new listeners. In Europe it is one of the most recognizable songs of the 80's along with 'Blue Monday' by New Order and 'Enola Gay' by OMD. Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder made an album in 1985 for the fil "Together In Electric Dreams".

To appreciate the nuances of Philip Oakey's voice you need to check out their last big hit called Human. It was produced by Janet Jackson's production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. His stoic delivery barely conceals masked emotions that really deliver. Must be seen with the iconic video. Also worth a look-see is Mirror Man.

Human League is underrated with the exception of about 3 songs. Give the following a try: ☆Louise (said to be a follow up song to Don't You Want Me set 10 years later. Has cool keyboard solo that goes hard too) ☆Love Action (also off of Dare) ☆Human (great song with hopeful message and very rich and thick 80s sound) ☆The Lebanon (another great one about conflict in Lebanon in the early 80s)

Their first album is much different from the rest. It's dark and industrial, and actually sounds newer and more modern than their 80s hits. Had they stayed like that, they wouldve had a huge cult following, but wouldnt have transitioned to radio till the late 80s, when that kind of music was making headway

They were big for a time. They are great! The guy portrayed in the song is a creep but when you hear the song it is so upbeat and fun. (Like a lot of songs). So fun to sing along with. Love the girl's part (karaoke). I was in 2nd or 3rd grade when this came out and it reminds me of summer and going to the pool everyday. I am sure they played this at the arcade. I loved Pac man, and Mrs Pac man, Frogger, and Space Invaders. At home I would play Tetris for hours. They cut a lot out of the song and video. This is a song you are in the car and turn it up! Mouse Trap was a fun 1980s arcade game. It was a version of "Whack-a-Mole" with a paddle and a fairly large table. The local arcade would run weekly high score contests with the winner getting the t-shirt of their choice. I won for Mouse Trap and got Twisted Sister...those were the days! 😂

This is really THE classic synth-pop song. It's too bad people think 80's music was predominantly synth-pop when it was actually just a tiny niche style of the era. Most of the 80's groups and artists from Prince, Michael Jackson, Michael McDonald, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Journey, Foreigner, The Go-Go's, Tears for Fears, Simply Red, and hundreds of others were NOT synth-pop. Thank God.

@@matthewashman1406 Yes, synth-pop was really a British invention that turned into the "second British invasion" in the U.S. in the early 80's. In fact, most of the synth-pop groups were British. Because of that they all had a sound-alike quality. Personally, I never cared for any of it. My early 80's (80-82) was Ambrosia, Paul Davis, Robbie Dupree, Michael McDonald, Little River Band, Frankie and the Knockouts, George Benson, Hall & Oates, Dan Fogelberg, Sheena Easton, etc.

@@matthewashman1406 I'm not trying to be a music snob. I was just sharing the direction in which my musical tastes naturally flowed. Even so, I have to admit the synth-pop group Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" was definitely a guilty pleasure! For me, the best music of the 80's was from 80 to 82/83. Once Michael Jackson and Madonna hit in 83/84, music styles started to change again.

I'm sure I probably heard this song in one of the arcades I used to go to back in the early '80s. This song came-out in 1982 which was the year I turned 15 years old. Back then, I was still playing Pac-Man and even more so Ms Pac-Man, so those references Nick made were great and spot-on. It's so funny how that, for so many years, I always thought the first line of each verse was, "You/I were/was working as a waitress in a *coattail* bar..." but I guess it is *"cocktail* bar," after all. 🤔 Hmmm. 🤔 So, of course, this is the most appropriate song by The Human League to start-out with, as it was their first, their biggest and their signature hit. You should also definitely listen and react to, "Mirror Man," "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," "The Lebanon" and their last big hit, the appropriately-titled "Human," which was finally the only song The Human League had with part of their name in the title. I think you will love each and every single one of these songs. They always did keep their smoothness and the vocals got less robotic and more emotional over time.
