@@Atlas-Heisenberg_756 lol, yeah so I guess technically you could say that the actual term, "Pet Sounds" was Mike's idea. But, I don't think he was referring to the title when he said "Pet Sounds" was his idea.
Mike Love: “Sure, Jimi Hendrix was the one playing the guitar ... but he borrowed $5 from me to buy the strings he was using. So, I’m basically responsible for Voodoo Child”.
Presenting is part of the work though. I always presented because my teammates were too shy. They were replaceable (anyone can make a presentation), I was not (only I could present)
@Harold Albert Mike was pumping gas at night and working days at his dad’s failing sheet metal company to support his young wife (a shotgun marriage, and his first of six or seven marriages-accounts vary) when The Beach Boys got started.
He wrote Hotel California, Hey Jude. Like a Rolling stone, Stairway to heaven and Imagine on the same night he wrote, recorded and Produced Dark Side of the Moon. A very talented man indeed, He can even drive a car .
Bald Mike Love funny enough wrote Rubber Soul the album that included one of Bald Mike Love's best "Drive my car". It was originally titled "Drive my car to the hamburger stand",
Mike was great. He wrote our national anthem. He wrote the Magna Carta . I was there when Mike wrote the preamble to the constitution. Mike once wrote a grocery list. Nothing was beyond his scope. Mike can’t play an instrument, but he did write all of the beach Boys songs. Brian was sad, Mike was a dynamic rocket, blasting off with positivity! Brian was weeds in the grass, Mike was a bouquet of colorful flowers. Lol.
I said, I am music and I write the songs. I said, hey did you hear that Bruce?! I said, hey Bruce you can have that line for a song. So, I wrote the song.

@@scoop1127 never said he did. Mike loves voice is not a contribution, is that what you're trying to say? Then you'd be wrong. His voice is unique, and as much a part of the beachboys sound as anything or anyone else.
"So John Lennon came with this song and he had this line that went 'imagine all the great horned owls' and I said 'maybe "people" would make more sense in your song?'" - Mike Love at the "Beach Ball Boogie Woogie" album release party in 1996
He's a humble man indeed. He only ever talks about what he did on his day off, not all that he created on the first 6 days of the week. We should all be so grounded.
Not true. He's very interested in the lives of others, most notably, complete strangers who approach him. True, he'll begin most conversations talking about the group and himself but very hastely switch course by saying, "Well, that's enough about me. Let's talk about you. What do you think of me?"
"I remember when Moses came down off the mountain but he had 13 Commandments and i said Man you gotta have just Ten it sounds more timeless"- Mike Love
Listening to Mike Love talk about music and really anything else is almost torturous if it wasn’t so funny. His arrogance is only matched by his lack of talent.
@@armysniperman80 Bro, Mike Love literally wrote the lyrics to almost every song he sang lead on. He wrote the lyrics to most of their signature classics. Thank God they scrapped the original Good Vibrations lyrics by Asher and had Love rewrite them
He wrote candy-ass lyrics and bubblegum pop songs. Just as many other throwaway bands of that era. Brian was the artist of the band. Mike was always garbage.
He' really is the only reason, the Wilsons were talentless idiots but Mike Love was a genius that God sent to earth to save our souls. He is our Jesus. Idiots like you will put him on the cross but he will rise from the dead and come back in greatness you've never seen and then go to heaven were he belongs. HAIL LOVE
Gregor Strange Comparing him to Jesus is really not fair. I mean he's a cool dude and all, but he's not Mike Love. He also failed to give Mike Love writing credit for the universe and mankind. Mike should have sued him over that long ago, but our creator and savior is so humble that he doesn't need that.
And let's not forget [Mike] Love Me Do! Or And I [Mike] Love her! And then there was that Cirque du Soleil Beatle tribute show to Mike, simply called Love!! And Michelle was their tribute to him when Mike was thinking of going transgender (it wouldn't take much doing)!!!
Dennis Wilson at least was humble enough to admit many times that Brian was way better than he could ever be and was the very backbone of the entire Beach Boys Band. Dennis was also the only one in the Group who knew how to use a Surfboard. Dennis was a Real Life Beach Boy. Dennis was the most liked in the Band by all the Girls & Women too. Again to me the Beach Boys died after Dennis Wilson died just as Chicago died to me after Terry Kath died.
Bill Presley All so true! I am a big fan of Dennis Wilson too. Dennis didn’t choose drums- he was told to play drums because that was all that was left in the band and had to learn on his own- that goes overlooked I think. Like a lot of BB fans I find Mike Love annoying and self serving. In my opinion he shows all the signs of simple jealousy of Brian and Dennis. He brags like this most likely because he really feels insecure about his talents in comparison.
What jumped out at me when you mentioned it, is that Mike Love said he got home from surfing when he decided to write "Do It Again". He never surfed--Dennis surfed!!
@@jillbriska2416 If you read any of the biographical books written on the BB, the competition between the Loves and Wilsons goes back to the previous generation. Mike contributed to the group's success just as everyone did but unlike the rest he tried to control them. After Murry was fired, it became Brian's group in the studio and Mikey's group on the road.
I never realised what a bit part player Brian was in the Beach Boys story. Thank you so much for posting so Mike can get the credit at last for the brilliant ideas that Brian stole from him!
After Brian Wilson, Mike Love managed to take The Beach Boys from being one of the most respected bands on earth, to playing gigs after farm team baseball games.
No mystery there…Look at the cheese ball…you can totally tell, he has a talent for fucking stuff up? Can you believe someone married that! Proof of unintelligent life is the universe. A total Gommer and self absorbed Grifter GLWT unlovable mike !
When he sewed the first flag of the United States we were in total awe of him. You know, he’s all about Love. His presence at the Rock n Roll hall of fame was incredible since he filmed it all and was too busy to get on stage. This man is an Icon in the worst way ever!
A minimal talent who road the coat tails of one of the greatest musical talents in modern music. If ever there was picture book perfection of STFU, it is Mike Love.
@@jjrj8568 He also wrote Summer In Paradise, let’s be truthful here. True the guy has some writing credits on some great Beach Boys songs but most of those were primarily written by Brain. Also once the Beach Boy’s become the Mike Love Experience, they released the worst music of their career. Brian, Al, Dennis and Carl are more talented, creative and likable as people.
-Mike Love sued Brian Wilson for songwriting credits on a ton of Beach Boys songs even though his actual contributions were laughably minimal. Like, his contribution to “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” was “Goodnight, my baby/ Sleep tight, my baby.” If It were not for Brian, none of the BBs would be known. Mike Love is one the those lucky no talents who was in the right place at the right time.
He just couldn't wait for Carl to pass. Before that it was really Carl who ran the show, on stage and in the studio. If Mike is such a great song writer, where are the hits he has written without Brian? Brian has written many without Mike.
@@pancakelegend7826 John Phillips (Mamas & Papas), Scott McKenzie ("If you're Going to San Fran") and Terry Melcher (producer of Byrds, Paul Revere & Raiders & more). Oh, and Mikey. Also, from Wiki: "Mike Love and Terry Melcher's major contribution to the song was a re-write of Phillips and McKenzie's existing chorus and the addition of the "Aruba, Jamaica…" lines."
Actually, for many years before Carl died Carl ran the band, but Mike ran the show. I really think losing Dennis, not only as a brother but as a bandmate and as a personal and creative ally, had a huge effect on Carl. It was then, in the mid-1980s, that Mike began to make his move to run the show. It seemed that Carl didn't have much fight left in him, and he just let Mike do it. Soon you'd start seeing the dancers and the cheerleaders onstage with the Boys, which Carl and Al did not like at all. Carl was still the musical director, but Mike added all of those touches onstage that had nothing to do with the music and everything to do with the show.
Love had seized control long before Carl died. In fact, he basically got hold of it after Dennis died. Before that, Brian, Carl and Dennis usually acted as a unit and all three of them wanted to push the creativity of the band (they could usually rely on Al's support as well). But then Brian had his breakdown, and Carl, being the closest to Brian was the one who everyone looked to. Then Dennis died and Carl was going through substance abuse issues which allowed Mike Love to get control of the band.
Brians melancholy that Love speaks of drove Brian's muse, allowing him to write such wonderful songs. " In My Room", " God Only Knows" and many others come from a deep place. Love is superficial.
Sure, Brian wrote sad songs, but he also wrote some of the most uplifting, deliriously happy music on the planet: Darlin', This Whole World, Soulful Old Man Sunshine, Wild Honey, etc. Mike made a significant contribution, they all did, but Brian Wilson is the no.1 musician of the rock music era, so gimme a break, Mike Love.
If he contributed so much and wrote so many songs why did it all stop when Brian had his breakdown. Shouldn't there have been many more wonderful songs written by Mr. Love? Also ,Mike took him to court after the other Wilsons were dead and Brian in a brain fog. Pathetic.
He can live to 200 and be available for interviews the entire time, there is just _no way_ he will convince anyone that his contribution to The Beach Boys came even close to that of Brian Wilson's.
ConcordClark He actually did that in 1963 already and then wrote a song about it called Surfer Moon. He then sued NASA in 1969 for not giving him credit when putting a man on the moon.
When I think of Mike Love, I think "Mr. Positivity." I know we all do. That explains his many public appearances, talk-show bookings, and endorsement deals, not to mention his beloved reputation. And his enormous musical talent just oozes out of him. That explains his prolific solo career and both the massive sales and critical acclaim that work has garnered. What's most amazing is the humility he's retained despite all of that. As this video demonstrates, never will one hear him pat himself on the back. He's all the time expressing appreciation of and giving credit to others. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Mike Love is a national treasure.
So Herman came to me and said, "I have this story about a ship", and I say "that's great, what if there's a white whale that he's chasing", so He's great but I was the one that came up with the book really, you owe me royalties Herman!

@@17donhol Man, when Love gave that speech at the Rock and Roll HOF saying how much better he and the Beach Boys were than "the moptops" (he embarrassed Carl Wilson so much that Carl flatly said afterward, "Well, we'll never work again"), all I could think was how lucky he was that John was dead, because he would've eviscerated him in his own speech.
Yup Brian was the Group's Studio master even when he wasn't touring live concerts with The Beach Boys for 12 years (late 1964 to early 1976) his blueprint influence was all over the Group's songs. That is exactly what his brother Dennis said. Dennis said without Brian the Beach Boys would never had existed. So there you go Mike.
Mike Love is sooooo very lucky that Brian Wilson is his cousin and took him out of the sheet metal shop where he was a manual laborer. We all wish that Mike was still cutting and fabricating metal. He is a jealous liar. He would be nothing without Brian Wilson.
Excellent point; I had forgotten about that: Sheet metal laborer working for his dad. Good, honest work, but not exactly rock star status which Brian gave him.
@@marymagdalene3004 He’s just so full of self importance and seems to actually believe that he is a talent. Love ruined… and I do mean ruined, the group’s induction speech into the Rock Hall of Fame. The jerk is probably (at least partly) responsible for Brian’s health issues. Mike Love’s jealousy, insecurity and ego drove him into invading Brian’s space during his (Brian’s) beautiful acceptance speech. And, just as Love has a history of doing, he had to be seen and heard. I was (and remain) embarrassed for the other members of The Beach Boys. Again, Mile Love should be bending tin in the sheet metal shop (which is, by the way, an honorable profession; nothing negative about that line of work). The point is that Mike Love should be the poster boy for “being at the right place at the right time.”We should all be praying for Mike to change (and while at it do the same for ourselves for disliking him so) but Mike Love is a hard pill to swallow. I do pray that life is being kind to Brian. And, by the way, Al Jardine is a good man. He has remained a loyal friend to Brian. I admire Al and his son. Both, have class.
And the thing is he didn't even a really need to tell them to tear it down because he could have done it himself by just pointing at it and a laser would have come out of his finger and blown the whole thing up.

I remember talking to him as he waited for his flight in Santa Barbara (I was TSA). It started off great because I mistook him for Carl. When I finally asked if they were getting Mike back in the group, it all came unglued and he turned into the uppity asshole that he's known for. Hells bells....I was only 22 at the time. :(
@@mumblesslam Still no reason for Love to be an a**hole about it. But then when has he ever needed a reason? Also, nobody said when this took place so we really don't know whether Carl had passed at the time.
I’m reading Love’s autobiography right now. As you can guess it’s petty, self serving, and he makes it a point throughout the book to say he helped Brian write this song that song and on and on ( which I have my doubts, even though he sued Brian and won in court for song writing credits with many of their hits). That being said it’s a really great book,. He’s honest and tells his side of the story. I mean I’m sure it was hell dealing with the craziness of the Wilson’s, their drug habits and behavior, and keeping it all together.

when I was about 5 or 6 i went to a beach boys concert with my dad. Beach boys were one of our favorites to go to. Anyone who has been to a Beach boy concert knows what I'm talking about. Anyway we were waiting for autographs, and my dad half joking tells me to just go back stage and get one. So I ran back stage. And my dad almost had a heart attack. I saw Mike Love talking to some people and I start tugging on his shirt, "hold on a second honey." He replies putting a hand on my shoulder but continues to talk to his friends. I keep tugging at him. After a minute or so he asks me what I need. I tell him. He signed my shirt then picked me up and carried me back to my dad. Class act. I'll never forget it! I forget. What instrument did Love write all this stuff in again? Is dancing like a Parrothead at a Buffet concert after 6 margaritas a musical instrument?
I’ve ALWAYS believed ego-centric behavior is actually a cover-up for being insecure . Needing more credit than one gets naturally means needing to take credit where it’s not do. Insecurity!

People liked the Beach Boys because of the Mike Love positivity? But had disdain for Brian's "melancholy"? For god's sake, Brian wrote all the positive and melancholic beach boys songs that ever mattered
"I was mr positive thinker while Brian was melancholy. I complimented Brian's melancholy with my upbeatness." Like dude you wrote 5 words in the entire fucking song... Zero self awareness. Truly.
