For Tahitians, fishing is a defining pillar of the culture and community. World of Adventure heads out on a traditional Tahitian fishing boat, The “Poti Marara”, or ‘the boat that catches flying fish’, with a local captain and his crew in search of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Marlin. The Poti Marara, most recognized for its one-handed steering system, became popular in the late 1950’s and has revolutionized the way fisherman in French Polynesia are able to hunt down fish like Mahi Mahi, using one hand for a spear and the other to steer. This style of fishing is exceedingly difficult, requiring equal parts knowledge and technical skill to return home successful.
