We had heard rumours of a hidden beach in Cardiff where the debris of demolished buildings had been dumped for decades. We went looking for it, with a bit of Splott's history along the way - and couldn't believe what we found.

The big domed pieces of metal are from the molten metal ladels in the steelworks. An interesting one is if you look at moorland Park in Google maps from above you can see the shape of the old streets 40 years after they were bulldozed onto the beach.

Go fishing there often, if you follow coast for mile or so you would find old ww2 bunkers , right down towards barrage, better than old bricks

Been many times. Names on bricks are the names of the brick factories over South Wales and rest of UK.

The dome shaped metal at the end of the video are remnants of blast iron slag. The slag was run into the ladle the tipped into the sea. The slag would partially cold so that it looked sold but was still molten inside, when it hit the cold sea water it exploded which looks like what happed there. The ladles were shaped like that so that the molten metal could not run into any corners and "grip" the ladle and would roll easily when they tipped it out. Hope that helped.

Steve ( is that your name sorry if i am wrong) You said "De-industrialisation where the country moved away from heavy industry". Disagree, the country didn't neither did South Wales but the politicians did, Labour then Tory. Like Auto industry in Midlands where i work and Steel factories need investment and Banks, The Rich, Businessmen and usless MP's all failed to do this. We were 5th in world 1967 now not in top ten, but Germany, Japan and USA were and still are in top ten, so The West can compete but it is down to investment, automation and skills via training. Our politicians are traitors to the UK when they fail to invest for the people and the long term. These jobs would pay double retail and minimum wage jobs as well as providing our country with top quality steel for strategic industries. We have dumbed down our country and seem more bothered with side issues in politics instead of quality well paid jobs.

Agree largely with what you say. Just wanted to keep it as simple as possible for the purposes of this video!

@@jiwjiwfilms4835 There's a difference between making things simple to understand and having the correct information. Welsh coal and steel has been the best in the world, partly because of the quality of the raw materials. Welsh produce has been undercut and unsupported by governments trying to maximise profits for themselves or withdrawing when invstment was needed. People of Wales have worked and died trying to maintain livelyhoods and standards.

It would be so good to have two young people educate themselves a bit more before stumbling through what was an area of many people's lives and who have living relatives and descendants. Saundersfoot is completely different from Tenby, but even though told by the young man, the young lady made fun of the fact. It's usually people from outside Wales who make mistakes, disregard facts and make fun of the Welsh when corrected. I would say ...a bit more respect please.

Not Beach. Not secret. No way to get there safely. Next to Dirty steel work and huge metal scrap pile, gypsy camp. I live but a 10minutes walk from there and been once in 55 years. I dont think many locals would think it as a beach

Yes - more than a hint of sarcasm when calling it a beach!

A beach is a beach, it's a geological feature. Might not be an ideal holiday destination, but it is still a beach :) I've been there about a dozen times over the past 11 years of living in Cardiff, I live about an hour's walk away :) It's a fascinating place :)

I went there to investigate it as a fishing point. There is broken glass from car windows everywhere, no place to leave a car.

I was educated in the Catholic Grammar School, St Illtyds, in Splott. I was one of a few non-catholic pupils. Run by the very strict brothers of De La Salle. Excellent education. Good memories.

No mention of why the steelworks closed - "de-industrialization" you said - so you are saying that it closed because it closed. Often hard to hear what the lady is saying and the wind noise sometimes gets in the way, perhaps a microphone windguard would help. Heavy font capital letters is difficult to read especially with the brackets (why are they included?). Why did you say "slums" demolished? When did they turn into "slums" - were they dirty, falling apart? We live nearby, not too happy about that, we had relatives there. Your faces often dominated, with often wobbly limited view pictures. We didn't see a good view of Splott beach The shore was ignored. The beach and shore got forgotten as we were shown the bricks. Couldn't see the beach and shore because of the bricks. I wanted to see the beach and its shore, but its outlook, extent and presence was ignored. The walk to the end of Splott beach never happened, never really saw the water. A poltical reason for the industry closures was safely by-passed, and it was a bit ignorant about the houses. People took pride in their houses, polishing steps. Our relatives lived there. We were a bit annoyed.

Imagine what it could be if an effort as made to clean it up :) Obviously it'd be a huge project, but I think it'd be worth it :)

It's not 'junior' it's JP - Justice of the Peace. The 'water treatment works' is a waste incinerator. I used to tell motorists asking the way 'Go to the roundabout and follow the signs'.

In the late 1970’s on Guy Fawkes night there was a devastating fire on Bridgend street that was the start of the decline of that part of Splott a lot of my family lived on Bridgend Street and my grandparents lived on Aberystwyth Street and I lived on Moorland Road

At 26:45 the bricks you say you can't quite see what it says on them, I think says A B C which stands for Aberdare Brick Company

That building at 15.00/ That was at the top of Portmanmoor Rd. and turn left. It was on the left. We used to call it West or East moors. I used to go to disco's there as a kid. I remember dancing to 'Do you wanna be in my gang' by Gary Glitter. Our house backed on to the Dowlais. I remember the smell of Rotten eggs. Moorland Rd infant and junior school. Outside toilets and The Echo to wipe your arse. Gypsy camp at the bottom of Portmanmoor Rd. Jumping on and off moving trains on their way to Dock and steel works. Using smouldering asbestos to light fires on demolition sites. Standing watching Johnny Cox getting his head kicked in outside the Bomb and Dagger. No hot running water. Tin bath hanging on back wall. Screaming as my mother put all us kids through it like a sheep dip on a Sunday. It wasn't that hot according to her gnarled calloused hand. It was such fun as a kid in Splott in 60's and 70's lol.

Shirley Bassey spent her childhood living in Portmanmoor Road, in the shadow of the steelworks. Now the terraced houses are all gone and there are just factory units there.
