Hello! Today's film is a great Tom Clancy film starring the one and only Sean Connery himself! Such a fun but tense movie that does a great job of building and sustaining tension in a confined environment. I also think it is funny that Sean does not have a Russian accent at all, it didn't ruin the movie in any way for me, in fact, I think it made it better for some reason! Thank you for watching! Have a great day!! :)
@Billis75

If you do James Bond, I'd suggest watching all of them, because all of the Bond actors bring something different to the role (Timothy Dalton in the 80's is very much the same feel as Daniel Craig). I would say to be gentle with the first few, as the genre was new and they were figuring out what to do, so they kind of grow into the type of spy movies we see today. They made 5 films in 5 years with Sean Connery, and adjusted for inflation, compared to their budget, they were the MCU films of their day. Billion dollar equivalents some of them. Imagine if you made a film for 7 million dollars today and it grossed 500 million dollars, and then they did that like 5 times in a row.

There was also the moment in the film when Alec Baldwin imitated Connery's accent: "Ryan, shum things in here don't react well to bullesh." 😁

Well...it makes complete sense that Ramius would NOT have a Russian accent, since the character is Lithuanian. For all we know, Russian speakers from Lithuania could sound just like that to other people, and Connery was playing it totally perfect.🖖✌😁

BTW...if you really like the the character of Jonesy, you should definitely read the book...he gets a lot of development that they had to leave out of the movie. The "filler" that others describe in the book are mostly character development, explanations of how subs and naval warfare work, and the much much more complex plot that had to be much simplified for the running time of the movie...including more explanation of how the cook fits in the whole story. 💯✌

The underwater shots are all with (big) models in a smoke tank. CGI was not advanced enough in 1990 to do realistic submarines underwater. They did use CGI for some effects like bubbles and particles underwater. As a rule of thumb, if its 1990 or before; its gonna be models.

I believe the officer that Connery kills at the beginning of the movie was the political officer. Soviet units had a political officer assigned to ensure that the officers and men upheld the ideals of the communist party and to make sure the commanding officer followed his orders to the letter. As such, and as frequently portrayed in American films, the political officer was typically the most despised officer in the unit. Whether they were in real life is up for debate. In any case, the political officer would have to be disposed of before the captain of the boat could "go off script".
@waterbeauty85
@waterbeauty85 2 года назад
Yes the officer Connery killed was the political officer. The question of political offers being hated in real life is definitely debatable. In the modern heroic myth of the last stand of Panfilov's 28 guardsmen's defending Moscow which helped inspire real life Russians to endure the hardships and sacrifices of WW2, the most famous line in the story was attributed to the political officer: "Though our nation seems vast, there is nowhere for us to retreat, for behind us is Moscow." He wouldn't have been given that inspirational line if he was hated.
@iKvetch558
@iKvetch558 2 года назад
That officer was 100% the Political Officer. He was really sort of a "co-captain" on Soviet subs, and both he and the captain were needed for the most important decision, such as the use of nuclear weapons. The US had a similar safeguard by having 2 keys to fire nukes, but the US gave the second key to the executive officer or the weapons officer, and had no political officer sharing authority with the captain on other matters.
@mariusrutkaus
@mariusrutkaus 4 месяца назад
At least in 80s political officers were really hated and despised, at least my dad, who served in soviet army said that. Keep in mind, Putin, while he was serving in KGB in Dresden in 80s was not an actual spy. He was a political officer, hated by other KGB agents there.

I don't consider the cook/saboteur thing a "twist", it's just the story, not a twist! The government had a secret agent on board, who knew everything about the orders, who was supposed to overwatch everything, invisible among the crew. Then, when he saw that something's not right, he helped the government from inside to get the submarine back. When it didn't work his order was to destroy the ship, to prevent it from falling into enemies hands.

I always loved the scene in the canyon, when Ramius orders them to go through it faster than recommended. They called him the "Vilnius Schoolmaster." Not only is he rushing them to get away from the pursuing Soviet ships, but he's using the moment as training for his officers, and he knows they can do it. It's a nice character touch.
@Elios0000
@Elios0000 2 года назад
the guy in the cabin going over the order with Ramius is the Russian Political officer. they are same rank as the subs captain so they have effectively 2 captains when at sea. sub more so missile subs job is to hide. so the Political Officer was there to prevent things like what happens in this movie.

Tom Clancy books are fill with a lot of filler details. I do recommend reading them, but I just wanted to warn you about the dry writing you will eventually find yourself reading. Fun Fact: This movie starts out in Russian, then switches to English, in an early scene, as the political officer reads a passage from a book, which contains a quote from Robert Oppenheimer. The switch occurs on the word "Armageddon", which is the same in both languages, but pronounced differently.

Ollie - the used models and sets for the underwater scenes, but the insides of the submarines were real. The producers had a great relationship with the US Navy, and they allowed them limited access inside the submarines. Also, when the American submarine did that emergency surface, that was the first time ever that the public was allowed to see one of our subs surfacing like a dolphin. Previous footage was classified.

As others have mentioned, they used real subs, helicopters, and ships for a number of scenes - the US Navy collaborated with them to make this movie. One FYI for you, Submarines don't use Radar underwater, they use Sonar. Radar is radio waves and is used in air. Sonar is sound waves and is used within water since radio waves are blocked by the water whereas sound carries extremely well underwater.

"If you see them, they see you" 5:51 Very much NOT the case in the time period that the story takes place in. In the mid-1980s, the United States had a TREMENDOUS advantage over the Soviets in the effectiveness of their sonars, due primarily to the early and widespread adoption of digital signal processing. From what I understand, the US still has an advantage in sonar over the Russians, but that the Russians have caught up by a huge amount, to the point where the US Navy has now officially become concerned over the quality of the latest Russian subs and their equipment. 🖖✌

Here's some other submarine movies you should check out: Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) The Enemy Below (1957) Das Boot (1981) Crimson Tide (1994)

And about 15 minutes of U-571.

@@nellgwennSounds about right. That movie is very cool in some ways but it has a ridiculous unbelievable plot and apes Das Boot at every turn but badly.

@@imvandenh Like I said, about 15 minutes of it is really good.

I love how you can still hear Connery’s Scottish accent over the Russian 😂

I've seen some Russian reactors do this film and they say the same thing, the accent is very distinct to their ears.

29:50 Water pressure means you don't have to hope -- submerged there's no way you're getting that hatch open if there's deep water on the other side.

When you said jonesy gets a gold star in the book he got a promotion to 1st class and 15 minute shower on a sub you wet down turn off the water soap up then rinse off the soap .maybe 4 minute's of water per shower so 15 minutes is a a privlage

Connery's Russian is horrible. There are a few in the movie who aren't too bad, but most of them can't speak it a lick. See your fellow reactor Dasha reaction to this movie -- she's Russian, and she evaluated the Russian in the movie.

A similar movie is Phantom from 2013. I think its based on the same incident.

Love your reactions but there is so much stuff reflecting in the screen so one can't see the movie you are watching, is this an accident or on purpose because of copyright or something..?

For this video and some others it is because of copyright. The video was taken down so I had to re-upload it more translucent

Geez, man. Watching an Alec Baldwin movie lol? And I feel like future reaction channels that go into Beetlejuice, not knowing anything about it, just expecting a weird Tim Burton movie starring Michael Keaton will start it and get uncomfortable fairly fast lol.
