Rock Hunters take kids out to discover the the beautiful inside of thunder eggs at the Richardson Ranch, near Madras, Oregon.
Thunder eggs are fascinating. The egg-shaped rocks with the rough, gray exterior hide agate, opal, jasper and other gemstones and minerals that evoke fantastic interior landscapes. Along with being Oregon’s official state rock, Thunder eggs are often found in the High Desert of Oregon.
“Thunder Eggs” is also one of the most popular “Oregon Field Guide” stories ever. This video produced by Vince Patton and filmed by Nick Fisher. #opb #thunderegg #rockhounding #oregonfieldguide

Im not sure why everyone is saying we don't know how these are formed, we learned about this in seventh grade earth science. Thunder eggs are almost like geodes they form the same way as gold and quartz super heat and under super amounts of pressure turns it all into a slurry of gases that come up from way down and as soon as it finds space it begins to cool and pressure lowers the gases cool condensing and depositing what it carries on to the surrounded rock. Slowly over centuries the void is filled completely making a thunder egg, when the void is not completely filled it's called a geode. Oh you can have both a geode within a thunder egg those are super amazing, but you can't have a thunder egg inside a geode
@robertbradford3461
@robertbradford3461 5 лет назад
Kurt Fox listen fuck nuts at 3:25 or so the "expert" says that they dont know how they are formed. And that's bulshit because we do know how they are formed I try and only comment on video topic and or subject, but when you comment on my comment and haven't even watched the video we're talking about, that kinda makes you the loser. Have a nice day

I just found my very first thunder egg. In a dirt lot in my town, just a couple blocks away, *somewhere* in the Mojave desert. Alas, I don't have a big enough blade for it, it's a bit bigger than a softball. God I love rockhounding! I also love how lucky I've been hunting IN TOWN. Methinks nobody but me knows about these places, but since it's not isolated I wonder if people know what I'm doing and move in on my secret locations...

I was fortunate to have found 3 Thunder Eggs this season agate hunting up in the UP of MI by Superior out of a quarry. That specific area has thunder eggs, but it is much more well known for the beautiful Lake Superior agates we find there. A sliced Thunder Egg reminds me, in some ways, of some sliced moss agates. In fact, the first Thunder Egg I found in that area was about the size of a baseball and at first, I thought it was a moss agate. I have one Egg from OR that was given to me by my son in law, who lives out there, and the OR Thunder Eggs seem to have a wider variety of colors than the ones we find in that area of the UP of MI.

My theory about how geodes are created is that when during an eruption there are globules of lava tossed into the atmosphere that cool enough before landing to form a shell. Then as they become part of the pyroclastic flow steam is injected into them furthering the cooling causing them to seal further and from the partial evaporation of the liquid inside, crystals are formed making the beauty within. Just a thought.
