The Silmarilion reads like a very true work of mythology. It encompasses history with theology and even astronomy. It's a story that tells you how mountains were formed, how stars came to shine, where the wind comes from. And it tells how Good and Evil came into the world. It could, in a very real sense, be the basis of a religion. While Howard's essay is far shorter and more brief, it has a very real sense of an actual secular _history._ Like all Conan's book, there's a gritty realism to it. It reads like an essay of a larger body of work one would submit for a Historical Undergrauduate Degree. And both have similarities. Both have Atlantis and its collapse as a central pivotal moment (Numenor in Tolkien). Apparently, according to L Sprague DeCamp, who met Tolkein at one point, he mentioned he "rather liked" Howard's work.

I like the Conan stories a lot however as I'm not a native speaker I do find it hard to read them as they are full of difficult words .The images his writing conjures in your head though while reading is excellent and the world is just as fascinating if not more. I listened to this while looking at maps of the world found on google and it made it even better. Its very immersive and I cant wait to explore it more through Howards stories. I just love the idea of different races in war/alliances, Dangerous jungles full of savage's/deserts etc. Are there any other books that have as immersive worlds like Howard's?

Clark ashton smith's hyperborea and zothique stories are amazing, as well as Jack Vance's dying earth stories. Those may be difficult to read though. You could try Michael moorcocks elric saga the stories are great and in my opinion easier to read than Howard's writing, mainly because moorcocks stuff was written more recently, and because of that it has less antiquated words.

I'd have to say that Kull is just as fearsome, ferocious, and formidable a warrior as Conan. I love Conan to death but Solomon Kane is still my most favorite, I love the English Gothic setting and the unyielding zealous moralist Kane is. @@hellsing507 l too am a huge Conan fan, but there's always been something about the character of Kull than appeals to me much more. I think he's a much deeper, much more interesting personality than Conan, inhabiting an even more dangerous and mysterious world. And l agree with what you've observed about Solomon Kane, my second favorite Howard character behind Kull. Kane is like the living sword of God's righteous wrath. Some might call him a fanatic, but his unshakeable moral core and holy code of honor are at once sacred and immutable.

One thing I did not quite understand until reading 400 pages of Conan stories, is that "Hyborian", although gives the name to the Age and the Supercontinent that the stories are set in, is actually a word which refers to the people of the West, the Hyborians, which includes Nordheim, Cimmeria, Aquilonian, Hyperborea, Kosh, Nemedia, Zingara, Argos, Zamora and many more. Hyborian basically means European or white people. In Khauran it's explained that the royalty and nobility are Hyborian, described with white European traits, while the commoner population are not, they are local aboriginals and described as more swarthy. Stygia, Turan and Shem are obviously not Hyborians.

So just out of interest, which of the Gods of Howard's Conan Universe (and feel free to throw in Lovecraft's as well since they were peers and throw in Game of Thrones while you're at it and Warhammer too why don't cha!) would you think is "real" or actually worship or follow and believe in? The Gods seem to be inspired by "real life" Gods as well as "real" aspects of life. Even Lovecraft's Gods seem analogous to some real deities and conceptsm, some of which are taken quite seriously today. The Cimmerians in the Hyborian Age are based on Scythians but with some Irish traits and homeland, depicted as as the ancestors of Irish people. In real life the Cimmerians were part of the Scythian cultures, and the Scythians absolutely defeated everyone who tried to conquer them. Darius the Great was defeated by the Scythians, Cyrus the Great was defeated by the Scythians and Alexander the Great was defeated by the Scythians. The Hyborian Cimmerians are OP because they're based on a very OP real life people. And the Persians and Greeks saw the Scythians as barbarians. So I don't see a reason why this would diminish your enjoyment.

Why can you not find good readers/narrators, but instead expressionless monotone voices like this young man?! 🙄

Commendable effort, but a teenager’s voice, I can’t... I just can’t. It almost feels like you’re reading fan fiction. I need my George Guidall for this sort of thing.

That seems like one of those thoughts one should keep to oneself. Like, "A wonderful thesis, but your face is ugly."

@@Not_An_Alien I’m sorry I offended anyone. But how can I keep this to myself? The voice is a major component in this, and it should be pleasant and fitting to the material. Intelligibility isn’t the only thing that’s important. I understand those qualities are subjective, but it’s the typical sort of opinion one shares for this sort of thing.
