When I was 13 I was diagnosed with cancer. I went into the beautiful Jeanie bottle nightly thru meditation/visualization as a place of healing. My bedroom was decorated like the inside of the bottle and everything ( thanks to my parents 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻). I’m still kicking 30 years later. I will always have a special place in my heart for Jeanie and her bottle. 💜🧞‍♀️🕯

I think before destroying the sets they should ask some museums if they would like the set. It benefits the museum as it draws people in and it keeps the show alive too. Totally beneficial to everyone.

The down side of the "museum" idea is when the venue closes and the city gives the O.K. to destroy the history that is there... It happened to Buena Park's Movie Land Wax Museum.

The problem is we're talking about two separate eras, here. Back in the '60s (and even the '70s), show producers/studios had no concept of a "secondary market," or even nostalgia, or any reason, really, to save anything. They were just doing their job, finished it, and moved on as economically as possible. It never occurred to anybody to "ooh, we gotta save it for posterity" or "there may be an eBay one day"! Nowadays, ask that question all you want ("should sets be saved?")! We now have an appreciation for nostalgia, museum desire, and yes, a secondary market i.e. auctions/estate sales, etc.

Hagman kept the first season version of the bottle set, which was very plain with black & gold patterns - not the glitzy, jewel encrusted color interior that is shown throughout this video. So Hagman temporarily rescued the first season set & it was ruined accidentally, whereas the color series version was deliberately destroyed when the show was canceled. The I Dream of Jeannie book by Steve Cox verifies this, quoting a Screen Gems inter-office memo from 1970. By the way, the behind the scenes images shown here (longshots of Barbara Eden inside the bottle) are from the "15 Years Later" tv movie, rather than the original series. I wish all versions of the set had been kept in a museum, but realize how impractical that endeavor is in real life. Nice reporting, though, on a genuinely unique aspect of a beloved 1960's sitcom.

Sadly, many television show sets were destroyed when their series was cancelled. This was so wrong. Debbie Reynolds deserves kudos for rescuing so many outfits from Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond. She purchased them at dirt cheap prices, as they were about to be destroyed anyway. As a result she saved many classic outfits, including the dress Marilyn Monroe wore over the subway grating in "The Seven year Itch", which sold for 4.5 million dollars a few years ago. But not many were as foresighted as she. Poor Milton Berle. They actually taped over his shows, and as a result, he did not have the star power Lucy had in future generations, because Lucy's shows were filmed, and are being rerun in perpetuity. He was so angry when interviewed about this because he said that, if he was approached, he would have purchased the kinescopes of his TV show, which was the most popular show on television until "I Love Lucy" came along. So much negligence on the part of television, which did not realize how important saving these treasures would be to future generations of viewers.

Apparently, it was a similar situation for many of the older television programs produced by the BBC that were recorded onto video tape. These video tapes were expensive back at those times, and because of this, they commonly recorded over older programs to more affordably reuse the tapes, rather than creating archives of the programs. Disturbingly, something else that also happened, due to their policy was that when copies of classic doctor who episodes were purchased by different TV stations worldwide, they were licensed to be broadcast for only a certain period of time, and after their licenses expired, they were required to destroy their copies of these episodes. However, sometimes some of these stations weren't diligent to follow these orders, so thankfully, some of the copies of these old episodes still exist today because of this. Currently, there is an effort being made to attempt to find and archive all of the classic doctor who episodes, and possibly some of the other classic BBC programs, such as the avengers.

The concept of preserving old shows, movies, cars, and such didn't really exist in the 1960s. People wanted the next new thing, not nostalgia.

That happened in the U.K. also, many classic British comedies were wiped over. Comedy legend Peter Cook even made an offer to the B.B.C. to buy his videotapes but they wouldn't have it. Even some of the Beatles television appearances were wiped over. Unbelievable. Lucy was a smart businesswoman.

As a former prop and set builder, I can tell you that sets are made fast, cheap, and lightweight. Those things don't add up to being preserved. Although, there are places that are huge warehouses that take old sets from productions and set them up, and you can film there. You need a quick shot of a diner, or police station, they probably have one set up somewhere already. Really fun places to wonder around in.

There must be a gameshow set warehouse someplace. I've noticed that many recently revived gameshows are obviously using the same sets they last used in the 90's, or 80's, or 70's. Just with a bit of redecorating. Family Feud used its original set in each of its runs in California. The two family podiums were built with a sag in the middle that was never fixed. When the show moved to Georgia with Steve Harvey hosting, an all new set was built and unlike the 1970's carpenters that built the original, they could build things straight.

The problem with preserving sets, particularly ones such as Jeannie's bottle or the bridge of the Enterprise, is one of space, potential interest, and future value. Unfortunately, in most cases, that can only be determined in hindsight. Jeannie ran for a respectable 5 seasons, but I don't think it would have been possible in 1970 to imagine the impact that the show would have 50 years later. In the ideal world where the bottle set could have been preserved, it would still have required Warner to warehouse the set for 10-20 years before there would be enough interest to justify a donation to, say, the Smithsonian. The best that we can realistically hope for is that enough of the set design documents survive so that enthusiastic future fans can recreate the sets in a new era as has been done with the sets from Star Trek TOS. In the case of the two main recreations of those sets, the build was driven by the desire to continue the show's legacy through the making of fan films.

Yeah, I don’t think there was a lot of syndication for reruns back then. They only really started airing reruns in the 80s, and then came cable which needed programming, like Nick at Nite and TV Land. And then of course home video with DVDs, Blu-ray’s, and streaming. None of this was a thing. It was probably like Rudolph, where the puppets were simply thrown out because it was meant to be something simple to entertain children during that one year. Wasn’t supposed to be reaired every single holiday for generations.

@@UmmYeahOk Jeannie was canceled and went right into reruns. Syndication was around way before the '80's.
@UmmYeahOk
@UmmYeahOk 9 месяцев назад
@@johnathanscott1824did it rerun on NBC right after cancellation? There really weren’t a whole lot of channels back then. Probably only a few local independent networks aired the syndication, if they could afford it, and back then, there probably were still a lot of households that didn’t get UHF channels, so whatever was on VHF. Probably why a lot of what did get rerun, were black and white cheap stuff. Cable ended up doing the same, once that became a thing. You wouldn’t believe all the black and white shows they aired on regular kids Nickelodeon (not Nick at Nite). But I Dream of Jeanie was pretty popular on the networks that were able to rerun it, which most likely paved the way for other shows to be syndicated. (Worth the money if it brings in sponsors) So I still say that the studio did not know that the show was going to continue on being a success long after cancellation, because that really wasn’t a thing yet.

Rick, nearly all your stills are of the second set which was the prettiest of the three, and used the longest,. Your behind the camera revealing stills are exclusively of the third set which was built for the two reunion made for television movies produced years after the I Dream Of Jeanie series ended. That first set Hagman acquired was dark and a bit foreboding with intentional low studio lighting on it as it had a large oversized middle eastern traditional style oil lamp suspended above Barbara that was lit with a large flame . You should do a part 2 to this video with screen captures from those first season black & white filmed episodes it was featured in.

I think it’s important to keep sets from films and tv shows as intact as possible and if there are some that are able to be put in museums then they should be rebuilt there. There have been many great sets that have been torn down, which is a real shame. The Opera set from the 1925 Phantom of the Opera movie stood intact on the Universal Studio lot and was a tourist attention until the 2010s when it was destroyed for a Harry Potter ride. One of the most important movie sets that was still around from the silent era, gone for some amusement park ride. Film and television sets like that and the I Dream of Jeannie set should be preserved so fans can look at them for years to come.

The photos showing Barbara climbing a ladder to get in the bottle, etc., are from I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later (1985). It was a different set from the tv series, though it looks very close to the original. The original bottle set had already been destroyed. Notice they didn't get her costume right here. Gone was the bolero jacket and she has cat eyes in front of her waistband instead of the ones that went all the way around to her back. She also didn't have the white garnishment on her headpiece that went all the way around, either. How can prop/costume people be that careless when dealing with a show that beloved?

That first interior set was so sparse and dingy looking. Glad Jeannine decided to redecorate- even if it did take her 2000 years to do it.

@@Nathan-jq1uw I think sheer fabrics were draped up like swags, if I remember correctly. I think there was an Aladdin type oil light hanging also. The outside of the bottle was dark with only a vein of gold leaves; if memory serves correctly. The second 'bottle' was a lot more feminine and colorful. I had also read, at some point, that someone from the show either the writer or someone from production had gone into a liquor store and saw the Jim Beam bottle on a shelf and thought it would be a great Jeannie bottle. I wonder if they had to pay royalties to Jim Beam for using their bottle? I expect they would have to today. So much greed today.

The thing about trying to save sets is that there are so many shows that were out there that didn't catch fire in syndication. I don't even know if I ever saw "I Dream of Jeannie" in first runs. I was a little young for it, but I saw every one of them in syndication. Cable television superstations did so much for shows like this and by the time they became cultural phenomena, much of the physical history had been trashed or recycled. At least that's my thought.

I always wanted my own Jeannie Bottle. There were different ones used in the show. I believe they might have switched them up when the show was shot in color but I know Barbara Eden was selling them online a few years back but I had gotten over my Barbara Eden obsession by then lol.

A customer of mine in Denver that needed a roof repair gave me the tour of his ancient house I mean it was probably built around 1900. Anyway, he had the statue of blind justice from the original Perry Mason show by his front door. I saw the statue myself and that was around 1990

Audio systems were more than portable radios and record players. Big stereophonic "Hi-Fi" systems were available. My father was an audiophile and had an entire rack of mounted components, tuners, reel to reel tape decks, turntable, and of course enormous speakers 12 inch woofers with big horns on top and magnificent sound quality.

Having many family members working on motion pictures (from all of the great studios: Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Columbia, etc.) since the 1940's, including working on motion pictures myself, it is sadly typical that an extraordinarily large number of unique, original sets (including one of a kind props, etc.) are literally destroyed after a TV series ends and also when filming a movie wraps up. However, I think one of the most amazing ideas ever (that many have suggested) is the idea of opening a "Set Museum". I believe that many people, from many backgrounds, from around the world would come to see. It is way past time, yet, it's never too late.

They should sell them to an entity if a museum declines, and piece them off for sale or public auction. One of the best constructed sets was from And Then There Were None in 45 or so. Having a ballister from the staircase or a window section would have prosperity and provenance. Thanks for sharing.

We already (sort of) have a museum for tv artifacts. The Smithsonian in Washington DC has tv stuff like Archie Bunker's chair and Fonzie's jacket. I don't know what they have in storage from tv but what is on display is pretty cool! They also have a pair of the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore (all worn out of course) in The Wizard Of Oz. Have you ever been there Rick?

Larry Hagman actually got the 1st Season Bottle interior in his backyard, not the interior from 2nd-5th Season. The bottle interior seen in this video with Barbara climbing in is not from the show but from the 1st reunion movie: I Dream of Jeannie 15 Years Later. The one from I Still Dream of Jeannie is a different one than those from the show and 1st reunion movie.

Not every set can be saved but culturally significant sets should be preserved forever. Examples say being: - The Bridge of the Enterprise (TOS and TNG) - Bag End from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings - The interior of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars - The pub from "Cheers" The Dream of Jeannie bottle might even fall into this category.

I would think it would be as difficult to determine what sets to preserve or destroy as it would be to predict which shows would stand the test of time and be considered classics. I know sometimes sets are often recycled and reused in other shows. Wonder if you could do a video comparing the 1970’s animated cartoon Jeannie, to the original IDOJ show? I know Friz Freleng, one of the artists who helped bring Bugs Bunny to life, also animated the opening sequence for IDOJ. He also helped contribute towards the animation of the light saber beams in the original Star Wars movie.

I'm skeptical of Hagman's claims. He had alcohol problems and had friends party, yet blames neighborhood kids of trashing a temporary structure. Sounds like something JR would say. I'm fine with these sets being temporary and reused. Consider how much stuff you have. Have you ever thought how much you spend to store your stuff? Did you have to buy a bigger house because of your stuff? We should try to get by with less stuff. Buying, storing, transporting and disposing of stuff is expensive for our wallets and the environment.

With modern building materials, I'm sure if someone felt ambitious enough to rebuild some of the old sets they could based on photos or if they're lucky, maybe the blueprints are sitting in an old filing cabinet somewhere. That would be a cool concept for a museum.

Having worked in TV production I had a thought on why the original bottle set was replaced. The original Jeanie episodes were shot in black and white. When shooting in black and white , some colors simply photograph better. If you saw an actual color photo of an old black and white TV or film set, you might be surprised at how strange the colors actually look. My guess is that the original Jeanie bottle set photographed well in black and white but would’ve looked strange in color. I’m not saying that’s the real reason but it is a possibility.

I love models! Especially of amusement parks. Unfortunately everything can not be kept. Either there are size/ storage issues. In the case of the bottle UV rays and heat play havoc on plastic. Living in Houston, TX. I've had many things destroyed by the elements. Glad Larry could enjoy it as long as he did. Imagine listening to music in Jeanie's bottle. I think there is a hotel that replicates the bottle. I always thought that set piece & Addam's Family house would be a cool thing to see. So what happened to bottle #2??
