This song is masterpiece. One of my fave road trip songs ever. It helps me when I face health setbacks 4 years ago. And 3 years later, I’m cancer free!
Myles-Spike Webby God 4 you.ive seen a loved one go through it. It's horrible. I hope it stays far away from you for the rest of you life. And..this song is most definitely a masterpiece. Have you ever heard of a band called "Their will be fireworks"? If not..listen to these songs,"FOREIGN THOUGHTS".."OFF WITH THEIR HEADS".."WE WERE A ROMAN CANDLE".."JOINED UP WRITING" YOU WIL NOT REGRET IT:)
There are a few songs from The Alarm & Big Country that get to me in the same way as this song. Obviously, The Icicle Works were seen like an more alternative band, but this song was, as many have put it, more anthemic.
Goodness - I don’t think I’ve listened to this song since I was a teenager but apparently I remember all the words and singing along at the top of my lungs. We sure had the best music.
Being a teenager when this song came out; brought me here. Sounds even better after 30+ years. Don't know if I should smile while I hold back tears of my forgotten youth.
Another kick ass song from the 80’s. The songs from that decade never get old. Thank God I was an teenager during the greatest music generation. Viva la 80’s!
Me too! When MTV started in the US, I fell in love with every British band I saw. I started seeking out British Music only, Starting w Eurythmics, Culture Club, Duran Duran, The Smiths, the Cure, Cocteau Twins, New Order/Joy Division Siouxsie etc. All that “second British Invasion” music was awesome. Watched “the Tube; SNUB, The Young Ones, and a few years later Mtv came out with “120 minutes” and it was mandatory viewing for me.
It's because you weren't there, you obviously have your head up your posterior and you think it is cool to use "underrated" to describe songs YOU hear for the first time. Grow up, check the available online stats, and stay off RU-vid for a while...
Anyone checking out this video should know that Ian McNabb is still touring with the Icicles and also his solo stuff. He is still a prolific song writer and is currently working on his latest album which should be completed soon.
Elizabeth Culver Edwards I've gotta admit every 80's band I loved did come from the UK ! I'd like to thank the United Kingdom for making the 80's the best time of my life ! Psycadelic Furs, The Cure, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, New Order, Joy Division, The Fixx, Simple Minds and Tears for Fears were my favorite bands !
I was born in 1984, and even though you guys grew up then, I still feel I was part of that time, I had little experience with the 80's because I was so young, but the music is some of the best in history.
The name of the band was taken from the title of a 1960 science-fiction short story "The Day the Icicle Works Closed" by Frederik Pohl (who is one of my favorite science-fiction writers).
wholeheartedly agree! I was about 14 when I heard this awesome tune! I am 48 as well. The late 70s/early 80s were a magical time to grow up.....jailbreak, backyard hopping, waiting for the summer movie blockbusters, no cable TV, no internet, playing Dungeons & Dragons at my childhood friend's house outside during springtime thru early Autumn......and, the list and memories goes on & on!
Love comes Down upon us and it flows like water Burning with the hope of insight Feathered books the colors of the bright elation Stolen in the sight of love We are we are we are mature children Finding our way around indecision We are we are we are rather helpless Take us forever Whisper to a scream Birds fly In the eye of the pathos daughter Spoken At the bitter end Wasted Sacrificed for the new nirvana Night time sends the sun away We are we are we are mature children Finding our way around indecision We are we are we are rather helpless Take us forever Whisper to a scream Whisper to a scream Whisper to a scream Whisper to a scream Whisper to a scream We are we are we are mature children Finding our way around indecision We are we are we are rather helpless Take us forever Whisper to a scream Songwriters: Ian McNabb Released: 1984 Musicians: Ian McNabb --- Lead vocals/guitar Chris Layhe --- Bass/backing vocals Chris Sharrock --- Drums/backing vocals
I have a few problems with this... Firstly, there's no way he says "we're just children". I can't even begin to hear that no matter how many times I listen to this. It's "we are mature children". That's all I hear, every time. Also, you put "in the eye of the pathos daughter", but it pretty clearly says "faithless daughter". Finally, I hear "take us forever", and you put "changes forever". That one might be right but it's not how I hear it. Judging by the writing credit at the bottom, I assume you copy+pasted this from a lyric website, in which case it's they who are wrong. Sadly even the most reputable lyric websites aren't reliable 100% of the time. Guess the only way to truly find out is to check the original liner notes or ask the person who wrote it. Still a great song either way.
@@landonvincent7974 - It's "We are BUT YOUR CHILDREN." "(Birds fly) In the eye of the faithless daughter," and "Take us forever." Sadly, I still have this cassette tape. And its liner notes. Oddly enough, the only lyrics video for this song which is even remotely accurate is KARAOKE LYRICS, if you want to try to track that down somewhere.
@@stranger-hascandy8600 Sadly? That's awesome! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. If you think it's sad that you own a piece of music history, I'll gladly accept it.
Probably commented before, but this, with INXS and Big Country was revelatory when I was 16 in 1984-5. Still amazing, still incredibly rich in its devotion to love. It evokes the same emotional content as Ah-Ha, Under Pressure, and Big Country's first album. The main thing I would say is, listen to this whole album. It is amazingly good.
Yes, the album is fantastic. I just discovered it by accident. I had only heard this song and thought they were just a one-hit wonder. But they had a lot of great songs, and the writing is first-rate.
I played 'clean' guitar in an 'indie' band in the early 1980. We wrote and played our own songs. I now realise by listening to this and The Ocean Blue, The Wild Swans etc. that we also had a distintive 1980s sound. It's not all about heavy rock and flashy solos. Oh what fun we had back then. What a glorious musical decade. It's all about melody. Great stuff.
I was the same! Roland Jazz Chorus 120 with out-of-phase Stratocaster sound. I think of this track as way earlier than Ocean Blue; I liked OB a lot (especially their production) but for me they were college while this song is so junior high, early eighties-New Wave-Second British Invasion EPIC. One of the immortal classics. That jangly, stereo chorus solid state guitar sound was all over the early-to-mid eighties; the guitarist for our band got the JC-120 for Christmas sophomore year and we were in AWE. Stereo chorus! The Fixx (“Stand or Fall”), Duran Duran (“Is There Something I Should Know”) and Flock of Seagulls (“Space Age Love Song”) are all iconic examples. Unfortunately, I was the keyboardist in my little band, and wow did I feel lame trying to recreate what was coming out of megabucks Fairlights and PPG Waves and Oberheim xPanders with the meager funds I had. I finally got my hands on a Prophet V by senior year, but that was ‘87 when the era was getting kinda lame. But I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for coming of age during 1977-1986! Music has never been the same.
The 80s English bands were killing it! Born in the late 60s and grew up on this stuff. Living in the rural northwest of America, people around me thought I was a bit weird. Where's my boom box and torn up Levi jacket. Memories.
@@JosephPerrotta-db9xp - let’s be real!! 70-80’s have not been touchable, but for a rare track here and there. I grew up on 70’s, then 80’s for my teens and early adulthood. I was blessed, but 70’s NOT better, equal is ok with me.
My God I close my eyes and I'm in the middle of the club 1984. Man where did the time go❗️🤔 34yrs ago, wow. I was 24 years old and having the time of my life✨✨✨
Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, New Order, Joy Division, The Cure, The Cult, Icicle Works, The Fixx, Talk Talk, Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths The Smithereenes, Modern English, Dream Academy, Peter Schilling, Alphaville, OMD, Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, Flock of Seagulls, Berlin, Billy Idol, Scandal, U2 are just a few Bands of hand lol that made the 80's a great time ! Cocnut Grove Miami and South Beach, and Ft Lauderdale had the best Clubs.......
Squeeze , The Reuinion room and Confettis , Washington Square - not one regret for all the amazing shows , and the original Kitchen Club on 21st 1980s for the win
Ritchie Stirling How could I of forgot one of the best bands ever ! Sometimes I'll start listing bands and my mind goes blank lol...... Psycadelic Furs wer in the top three on the best 1. Duran Duran 2.Pyscadelic Furs 3.Depech Mode 4.New Order 5. Simple Minds I love the all but those are my top five."..
Whilst the wonderful Ian McNabb shouldn't need much of an introduction, it's worth saying that drummer Chris Sharrock is a legend in his own right and has been a member of The Icicle Works, The La's, The Wild Swans, World Party, The Lightning Seeds, Robbie Williams Live, Oasis, Beady Eye and is currently in Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
The BRITISH INVATION started with this awesome band ,The BEATLES. I met my beautiful wife hearing and dancing to this particular song. What A Ride and it's still as exciting now as it was on that dance floor hearing this particular song. LOVE THIS SONG.
Of all of the phenomenal music of the '80s--and we all know there was a lot--this song has got to be in my all-time Top Ten '80s list. So iconic; transports you back, just like that. Genius track.
In 1984 I was a freshman in High school and I remember the day my big brother brought this album home from the record store on cassette. I recall it vividly, even these thirty-nine (39)years later, because the cassette case was very unusual. It was bright ORANGE! 😂 Also memorable, as he placed it in the cassette deck, closed the door and pressed "PLAY," my ears were gloriously assaulted by the opening drumbeat. What a kick this song is! 😍
I'm lucky I guess, I feel no different now from when this song came out but I'm too old to slam dance any more. Ah, the good ol' days! I want to go back to the 80's.
I just saw the commercial and said “whisper to a scream!” And my husband said “what?” So I found this on RU-vid and fully remember how awesome this song was! He recognized the song eventually. 😁
I’m not sure if there’s a song that reminds me of the 80’s and my youth more than this one! The beginning of this song triggers a playback in my mind of a much happier time in the world!
A very underrated drum track. Not as easy as it sounds. There are two here actually. The main kit and the Octobans. The Tama drum company made Octobans, a set of long, thin tom-toms for a brief moment in the 1980's. Look up Billy Cobham for more playing.
Some things take forever But with building bricks of trust and love Mountains can be moved Love come, down upon us 'til you flow like water Burning, with the hope of insight Feathered, look they're covered with a bright elation Stolen, in the sight of love We are, we are, we are but your children Finding our way around indecision We are, we are, we are ever helpless Take us forever, a whisper to a scream Birds fly, in the eye of the faithless daughter Broken, at the bitter end Wasted, sacrifice for a new nirvana Night time, sends us on our way We are, we are, we are but your children Finding our way around indecision We are, we are, we are ever helpless Take us forever, a whisper to a scream A whisper to a scream A whisper to a scream A whisper to a scream A whisper to a scream We are, we are, we are but your children Finding our way around indecision We are, we are, we are ever helpless Take us forever, a whisper to a scream We are, we are, we are but your children Finding our way around indecision We are, we are, we are ever helpless Take us forever, a whisper to a scream We are, we are, we are but your children Finding our way around indecision We are, we are, we are ever helpless Take us forever, a whisper to a scream We are, we are, we are but your children Finding our way around indecision We are, we are, we are ever helpless Take us forever, a whisper to a scream
@@christophermiller7532 - Are you insane, or a terminal leftist? Russia was never going to do anything, and by the 80's they were so entrenched in Afghanistan it destroyed them. And when hasn't Iran not been A holes? And when haven't there been riots in the UK? And gas was 90 cents a gallon then and steady (the price went up in the 70's dimwit) Now we have socialists and globalists and militant muslims plotting to take over the entire world with their satanic horrors - grooming gangs, eating babies, transgender everything, corrupting and perverting every child they can find.... and dimwits like you saying there's no difference. How about it's LONG past time for people like you to STFU.
@@christophermiller7532 - That nitwit sounds like a Trump-supporting American. I don't know that it's safe to tempt him to go on a shooting spree... That being said, WHITE DUDES "WHITING" is - by far - the greatest thing I've read in any internet comment EVVVVVERRRRRRR! That was awesome!
I agree the '80s had one of the most fabulous pop culture periods in history (I was there, so I admit I am partial!) - but have to agree with Christopher Miller on the other points, heh. And sadly, for LGBTQ people during that period, I acknowledge that it was a time of great fear, grief, and stigma, due to the AIDS crisis that struck so many people in that community. I am _so glad_ an HIV/AIDS vaccine is finally coming out next year - amazing!!
This would fill the dance floor at the high school dances in the 80's. so glad I got to dance to all this great music then. And look back with Joy, Fun and Yes ...Awesomeness!!!
Best part of having older parents is listening to the older music that i might have not listen too if they had been younger. Now i love the 80's music industry
1984: Icicle Works: A Wisper to a Scream. Back in the day our company Promedia was located in Sloan Square London where we started creating music videos. Icicle Works was one of our first low budget videos that was scripted, shot and edited in one day. I miss those carefree years in the music industry riding a creative wave in the time of stellar music. Promedia: Terry Braun Director. Chris Humphries Producer. Roby Braun art director/designer.
Life defining for some, a hidden gem for others. I love how youtube can help you discover "new" old music. Before you needed a radio DJ, magazines and friends to do that. And there are countless of hidden gems. Sometimes you can even find whole playlists of them. I hope the generation that didn't experience the album-buying-days get to appreciate just how insane that really is and how expensive their playlists would 've been if they should have bought its as records or even cassette tapes back in the mid 80's.
Heard it first on Scream, then almost a year later on Stranger Things. You can bet I was shocked when I heard the familiar intro at the end of the episode. Perfect.
MTV Flashback almost 35 years ago ..April 1984 ( VHS tape no time stamp ) 95 minutes uncut . This video played . My wife asked me out a few times before i said yes , She was 20 , I was a Junior at my high school . I cant believe this song is from then...........
I heard this the first time on a Northwest flight from Minneapolis to London. Blew me away, because of its difference from what was popular in the USA at the time. So memorable.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I was lucky enough to see them live here in CA back in 84 at the Spirit in SD.They put on an awesome show. This whole album if you can find it is so good.
Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of a girl named Michelle in Vancouver. She used to meet me after work, but I never had the courage to tell her how I felt about her. Now, 30 years later, I hope she's happy.
Angela Young if you wouldnt have shortened "Great" by 2 letters..and adding an 8 and instead shortend other longer words that really take longer to read ....you would save time and energy and type time.....
IW along with songs from The Flock, The FIxx, Berlin, Big Country, etc., Skinny Puppy was the group that took me into a different direction from the mid 80's onward. I do listen to those groups rom time to time and they take me back, the 80's was a great time for music. So much crap nowadays, what a shame. And yes, the first viewing of the Stranger Things episode, I remembered this song and came here to see what you all had to say. Long live THE PUPPIES!!
